Algal biomass in a disturbed Atlantic river: water quality relationships and environmental implications.

Benthic algal biomass was determined at 38 sites along the Oria, a river with intense human activity on its watershed. Water temperature, total suspended solids and nutrient concentration affected algal biomass in different ways. Lower values of algal biomass [(chlorophyll-a concentration and ash-free dry weight (AFDW)] were found in the headwaters and forested tributaries, but also at sites receiving high deposition of solids (due to the outflow from paper mills and quarries). Higher values of algal biomass (both chlorophyll-a and AFDW) were common both in the main stretch of the river and in some tributaries receiving urban sewage outflows. Averages and ranges of temperature and dissolved oxygen concentration were compared for two continuously monitored stations. One of them (forested, nutrient-poor) had low algal biomass, while the second (open, nutrient-rich) showed high chlorophyll-a concentration. Accumulation of algal biomass had environmental implications both in water quality and in the fish diversity of the Oria. Diel variations of dissolved oxygen were much higher (and reached hypoxia) at the site with higher biomass accumulation. The abundance of a fish community (dominated by cyprinids) more tolerant to hypoxia at that site can partly be attributed to the influence of algal biomass accumulation.

[Determination of plasma ciprofloxacin levels in children treated with 0.2% topical ciprofloxacin for tympanic perforation].

Topical drug use can produce locally adverse effects by direct action or systemic effects as a result of drug absorption. Local tolerance of topically-administered ciprofloxacin (ear drops) and serum antibiotic levels after 7-10 days of treatment were evaluated in 30 children with tympanic membrane perforation and suppuration. There were no signs of local intolerance or ototoxicity and significant serum ciprofloxacin levels were not detected. We conclude that ciprofloxacin ear drops can be safely used in children with suppurative otitis media and tympanic perforation.

[Yag-laser for the treatment of laryngeal and oral hemangiomas].

Laryngeal and bucal hemangiomas are uncommon, although they carry with them, because of its sitting, a vital risk. The AA. report 2 hemangioma cases, one localized on the edge of the tongue, the other one on the aryepiglottic fold. Both were treated with photocoagulation by neodymiun-yttrium-aluminium (Nd-YaG) laser, with favorable follow-up and few complications.

Accumulation of hexachlorobenzene in humans: a long standing risk.

1. Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) internal dose in the general population of Barcelona (Spain) was estimated after new indications of the carcinogenicity of this chemical in humans were recently reported. Hospital blood bank facilities and randomly selected volunteers were used for HCB analyses in serum (n = 100) and cerumen (n = 25). Other main organochlorine residues often found in human tissues and blood (pp DDE, beta-HCH,) were also determined. 2. HCB serum levels currently found (Range 0.7-19.7 ng Ml-1; X +/- s.d.: 4.13 +/- 3.61; GM: 3.05) were compared to those found in a similar survey made in 1986 on the same population. The serum HCB levels showed a significant decrease (P < 0.001) when compared to the former results and correlated with age (P < 0.001) suggesting a progressive preponderance of a stable blood-adipose equilibrium with fewer variations due to recent and variable intake of the chemical. 3. Cerumen analyses revealed detectable concentrations of HCB in all samples (Range: 160-4790 ng g-1 in extractable lipid basis) and confirmed the suitability of this matrix to assess the body burden of residues accumulated in adipose and lipid-rich tissues. The set of results shows that, although HCB exposure has been reduced, the overall population under study still accumulates significant amounts of this possible carcinogen.

[Multicenter study comparing the efficacy and tolerance of topical ciprofloxacin (0.3%) versus topical gentamicin (0.3%) in the treatment of simple, non-cholesteatomaous chronic otitis media in the suppurative phase].

A multicentre double-blind randomized study was carried out to compare topical ciprofloxacin and topical gentamicin in the treatment of simple non-cholesteatomatous purulent chronic otitis media. Three hundred and eight patients were included in the study, 159 treated with ciprofloxacin and 149 treated with gentamicin. The percentage of clinical success (elimination of otorrhoea) was 95% with ciprofloxacin and 94% with gentamicin (ns). Likewise, the percentage of bacteriological erradication was 96% with ciprofloxacin and 93% with gentamicin. Both drugs were well tolerated, without changes in the audiometric values. In these patients, topical ciprofloxacin shows the same efficacy as topical gentamicin without any potential ototoxic effect.

[Primary meningioma of the nasal cavity].

Meningiomas are benign tumors developed from aracnoid meningeal cells. Its primary extracranial and extravertebral onset is a rarity, arising more frequently in the scalp and orbit. Its beginning in nasal fosae is considered exceptional. Diagnosis will be based on cranial CTY scan and histology of the whole tumour once extirpated. A case of advanced primary nasal meningioma is reported. The AA. emphasize the difficulties in presurgical diagnosis in this type of growths.

The decrease in auxin polar transport down the lupin hypocotyl could produce the indole-3-acetic Acid distribution responsible for the elongation growth pattern.

The variation of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) transport along Lupinus albus L. hypocotyls was studied using decapitated seedlings and excised sections. To confirm that the mobile species was IAA and not IAA metabolites, dual isotope-labeled IAAs, [5-(3)H]IAA + [1-(14)C]IAA, were used. After apical application to decapitated seedlings, the longitudinal distribution of both isotopes at different transport periods showed that the velocity of IAA transport was higher in the apical, elongating region than in the basal, non-growing region. This variation in velocity was not a traumatic consequence of decapitation because after application of IAA to the basal region of decapitated seedlings, both the velocity and intensity of IAA transport were lower than in the apical treatment. The variation in IAA transport down the hypocotyl was confirmed when it was measured in excised sections located at different positions along the hypocotyl. The velocity and, to a greater extent, the intensity of IAA transport decreased from the apical to the basal sections. Consequently, if the amount of IAA reaching the apical zones of lupin hypocotyl were higher than the IAA transport capacity in the basal zones, accumulation of mobile IAA might be expected in zones located above the basal region. In fact, an IAA accumulation occurred in the elongating region during the first 4-h period of transport after apical treatment with IAA. It is proposed that the fall in IAA transport along the hypocotyl might be responsible for the IAA distribution and, consequently, for the growth distribution reported in this organ. An indirect proof of this was obtained from experiments that showed that the excision of the slowly transporting basal zones strongly reduced the growth in the remaining part of the organ, whereas excision of the root caused no significant modification in growth during a 20-h period.

Modification by ethylene of the cell growth pattern in different tissues of etiolated lupine hypocotyls.

The influence of ethylene on growth in etiolated lupine (Lupinus albus L.) hypocotyls was studied in ethephon-treated plants. Ethephon reduced the length and increased the diameter of hypocotyls. At the end of the hypocotyl growth period (14 days), the fresh weight was reduced by 53%, and the dry weight was reduced by 16%. Thus, ethylene reduced water uptake in the tissues to a greater extent than the incorporation of new materials. Light microscopic measurements showed that the thickness of tissues was stimulated by ethylene, the vascular cylinder and cortex exhibiting greater increases (55 and 45%, respectively) than pith (26%) or epidermis (12%). Ethephon modified the cell growth pattern, stimulating lateral cell expansion and cell wall thickness, while reducing cell elongation. The response to ethylene varied in the different tissues and was higher in cortex and pith cells than in the epidermis cells. The ethylene-induced cell expansion in the cortex varied according to the localization of cells in the tissue: the central and subepidermal layers showed little change, whereas the innermost layers exhibited the greatest increase. Electron microscopy revealed that ethylene increased both the rough endoplasmic reticulum and dictyosomes, suggesting that ethylene stimulated the secretion of cell wall materials. In untreated seedlings, the pattern of cell growth was similar in cells from the epidermis, cortex, and pith. The final cell size varied along the hypocotyl, the cells becoming shorter and broader the closer to the basal zones of the organ.

[Bilateral chylothorax after radical neck dissection. Apropos of a case].

Bilateral chylothorax following radical neck dissection is an uncommon complication of head and neck surgery. Only 9 more cases have been reported in the English literature until now. Early recognition is not difficult if it is bear in mind when evaluating dyspnoeic patients with bilateral pleural effusions after neck dissection. In this paper the authors report their experiences with a case and comment on the treatment employed. The authors believe that due to its potential severity, it must be considered when ever head and neck surgery is performed.

1-Aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid as a substrate of peroxidase: conditions for oxygen consumption, hydroperoxide generation and ethylene production.

Conditions in which 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) functions as a substrate of peroxidase have been investigated by measuring oxygen consumption in the reaction medium and the production of ethylene. In both cases, the presence of Mn2+ and either H2O2 or the activated form of peroxidase, namely compound I of peroxidase, was found to be essential. Both oxygen consumption and ethylene production were dependent on enzyme concentration, the optimum ACC/Mn2+ ratio being 1:1. Oxygen consumption in a system with ACC, Mn2+ and compound I showed an enzyme-dependent lag phase and then proceeded to total depletion, suggesting that the system itself generates hydroperoxides that completed the catalytic cycle of the enzyme. The presence of these hydroperoxides in the reaction medium was detected by a colorimetric method. High H2O2 concentration progressively decreased oxygen consumption, the same effect being produced by catalase. Ethylene production was oxygen dependent, mediated by ACC-free radicals and gave a poor yield. The results suggest that the fate of these ACC-free radicals determines the yield in ethylene. These radicals must be oxidized immediately, otherwise their stabilization to hydroperoxides would prevent ethylene production.

Ocular and auditory toxicity in hemodialyzed patients receiving desferrioxamine.

During an 18-month period of study 41 hemodialyzed patients receiving desferrioxamine (10-40 mg/kg BW/3 times weekly) for the first time were monitored for detection of audiovisual toxicity. 6 patients presented clinical symptoms of visual or auditory toxicity. Moreover, detailed ophthalmologic and audiologic studies disclosed abnormalities in 7 more asymptomatic patients. Visual toxicity was of retinal origin and was characterized by a tritan-type dyschromatopsy, sometimes associated with a loss of visual acuity and pigmentary retinal deposits. Auditory toxicity was characterized by a mid- to high-frequency neurosensorial hearing loss and the lesion was of the cochlear type. Desferrioxamine withdrawal resulted in a complete recovery of visual function in 1 patient and partial recovery in 3, and a complete reversal of hearing loss in 3 patients and partial recovery in 3. This toxicity appeared in patients receiving the higher doses of desferrioxamine or coincided with the normalization of ferritin or aluminium serum levels. The data indicate that audiovisual toxicity is not an infrequent complication in hemodialyzed patients receiving desferrioxamine. Periodical audiovisual monitoring should be performed on hemodialyzed patients receiving the drug in order to detect adverse effects as early as possible.

The spectrophotometric determination of indole-3-methanol in small samples with p-dimethylaminocinnamaldehyde on the basis of the formation of an azafulvenium salt.

Indole-3-methanol is coupled, at acidic pH, with p-dimethylaminocinnamaldehyde to give a highly colored azafulvenium salt. IR, 1H NMR, and mass spectroscopic evidence indicates that this azafulvenium salt is the 2-[3'-(p-dimethylaminophenyl)-2'-propenyliden]-3-hydroxymethyl-2H- indolenine hydrochloride. This reaction led us to elaborate a rapid colorimetric assay for quantitative determination of indole-3-methanol formed by peroxidases as the product of oxidation of the plant growth regulator indole-3-acetic acid.

[Distant metastases originating from tumors of the larynx and hypopharynx].

Following a review of the world literature dealing with the incidence of remote metastases in tumours in the ENT field in general, and of the larynx and hypopharynx in particular, we present a study covering 927 patients suffering from cancer of the larynx and hypopharynx. The purpose of the research was to determine the incidence and position of metastases in this type of patient, and to determine their evolution. A total of 786 patients were followed over a minimum of 4 years, and 52 cases (6.7%) of metastases were recorded. They occur all the more frequently when the primary tumour is hypopharyngeal, of the low differentiated carcinoma type, or when there is a cervical ganglionic extension.

Necrotizing external otitis treated with ciprofloxacin. A case report.

Necrotizing (malignant) external otitis is a severe infection caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa which occurs mainly in elderly diabetics or in immuno-depressed patients (Chandler, 1968). The management of this condition requires the association between an aminoglycoside antibiotic and an antipseudomonal beta-lactamic, given parenterally during a 4 to 6 week period. Sometimes it is necessary to continue the therapy for months until there is no evidence of residual disease (Strauss et al., 1982). Ciprofloxacin is a quinolone with antipseudomonal activity which can be taken orally, and it is a useful alternative to the current treatment. The authors report a case of necrotizing external otitis which was successfully treated with ciprofloxacin.

Staining of xylem parenchyma mitochondria with photo-oxidized 3,3'-diaminobenzidine.

A photo-oxidized solution of 3,3'-diaminobenzidine (DAB) is used to stain xylem parenchyma mitochondria in specimens prepared from lupin hypocotyls fixed with glutaraldehyde and osmium tetroxide and embedded in Epon. No other subcellular components, including plastids, nuclei, vacuoles or cell walls were stained when xylem parenchyma cells were exposed to this reagent for 1 hr. This reaction was stable for 20 min at 80 C, inhibited by KCN, and insensible to 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole. The outstanding sensitivity of this reaction to inhibition probes suggests that this stain is analogous to the previously described DAB/cytochrome c/cytochrome oxidase reaction in plant mitochondria, although the incubation of lupin sections with freshly prepared DAB solution (free of auto-oxidized DAB) did not result in staining. These results draw attention to the unreliability of DAB oxidation for demonstrating electron transport in plant mitochondria. However, we do recommend photo-oxidized DAB as a direct ultrastructural stain for plant mitochondria without reference to its oxidative capacity.
