Changes were observed in the rate of avoidance responding in both components of a multiple schedule of Sidman-avoidance after the shock frequency was changed in only one component. The rate change in each component was positively correlated, in direction and magnitude, with the change in the relative rate of reinforcement (percentage of total shocks) in that component.
This study investigated some of the serial patterns among interresponse times during Sidman avoidance. It was found that the momentary probability of a response was determined by the length of exposure to the avoidance procedure during a session, by the time since the last shock, and by the duration of the preceding IRT.
Four goldfish (Carassius auratus, comet) were reinforced with food when they intercepted a beam of light. Each fish performed on both CRF and VI 50-sec schedules. In subsequent extinctions, the CRF schedule produced more responses on the first day than did VI, but after the first day the post-CRF rate dropped much more rapidly. These results agree with those previously obtained in birds and mammals.
