[Upper digestive hemorrhages. Our experience with 236 treated cases].

The results obtained in reviewing series of 236 patients suffering from upper digestive haemorrhages and observed in a close to 10 years period are reported. Some data regarding the age and sex of patients, the frequency of the condition at certain periods of the year and the type of lesion that led to bleeding are reviewed and results compared with those reported by other workers. In conclusion, stress is laid on the importance of trunk vagotomy associated with pyloroplasty as operations of choice in the surgical treatment of gastroduodenal ulcer induced haemorrhage which were, in the personal series also, the most frequently observed conditions.

Guanylate cyclase activity in Escherichia coli mutants defective in adenylate cyclase.

Guanylate cyclase, which catalyzes the synthesis of guanosine 3',5'-monophosphate, has been assayed in several strains of Escherichia coli. They include wild-type cells and mutants defective in adenylate cyclase, which is responsible for the synthesis of adenosine 3',5'-phosphate. Our results demonstrate that adenylate cyclase and guanylate cyclase are two different enzymes in E. coli and suggest that the gene that encodes adenylate cyclase also plays a regulatory role in the synthesis of guanylate cyclase.

Vascular feature of the hypophysis in Bubalus buffalus.

The hypophysis of Bubalus buffalus was examined morphologically and compared to that of the bovine. The morphology and behavior of the vessels supplying the hypophysis and their contribution to the hypophyseal portal system were described. We found characteristic vascular arches between the pars tuberalis and the infundibulum from which the portal vessels originate. These vessels may be divided into long and short vessels, have different origins and extension, and branch in different regions of the anterior lobe.

Biliary colic as a model for assessing analgesic activity in man.

Acute pain from biliary colic is a model of pathological pain suitable for pharmacological investigations. It has been found useful for assaying analgesic effect of a narcotic-type agent (pentazocine) and a non-narcotic drug (indoprofen), both given intravenously in a single dose. Differences in pain intensity scores assessed on a five-point scale were taken as measurement of the pain-relieving effect. Distribution-free methods were used to estimate the potency ratio of the tested drugs. The analgesic potency of indoprofen based both on total and peak effect was roughly one-tenth that of pentazocine on a weight-for-weight basis. No adverse reactions were associated with indoprofen and a few were found after pentazocine.
