Levonorgestrel binding to serum proteins of monkey, rabbit and rat was studied. It showed high affinity binding to monkey and rabbit serum proteins but not to rat serum. Characterization by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis revealed that the binding of levonorgestrel occurs to sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and albumin, but in rat it is confined to albumin only. These results suggest species differences in levonorgestrel binding to serum proteins and extrapolation of data from one animal model to another may not be directly feasible.
Fifteen previously treated patients with measurable metastatic colon carcinoma were entered into a phase II study of vindesine, 3 mg/m2/week IV. Fourteen patients were evaluable for response. No objective tumor response was observed; however, seven patients experienced stable disease lasting 9, 10, 13, 15, 16, 19, and 26 weeks. Neurologic toxicity was the most common nonhematologic side-effect noted, manifesting as abdominal pain, constipation, paralytic ileus, or paresthesias. Leukopenia was observed in 16% of the 104 weekly courses. Nine patients had a 50% increase of their platelet counts above their pretreatment platelet counts; six patients had a doubling of their pretreatment platelet counts. Mean platelet counts revealed a linear increase with successive treatments during the initial 8 weeks of therapy. Serial CEA determinations demonstrated a parallel relationship with clinical progression in six of seven patients.
The combination of mitomycin C, methyl-CCNU and 5-fluorouracil produced no objective tumor regressions in 25 evaluable patients with metastatic colorectal carcinoma. Patients who achieved stable disease survived significantly longer than patients who had progressive disease. This difference appeared to be more probably related to pre-treatment characteristics of the patients than caused by treatment. Serial CEA determinations revealed a parallel relationship with tumor behavior in 17 of 19 patients.
The histochemistry of mucins in the submaxillary salivary gland has been studied in 10 buffaloes of different age groups. The acidic mucins exhibited moderate to intense reaction in new-born and young animals; in adult animals, these were noticed in patches. Neutral and non-sulphated mucins were observed in traces and in mild amounts, respectively, in the mucous secretory end-pieces of different age groups; sialomucins were seen in moderate to intense concentrations. The seromucous end-pieces revealed traces of neutral mucins in new-born buffalo calves and moderate to intense concentrations in young and adult animals. These structures showed mild concentration of acidic mucins, hyaluronic acid and sialomucins. Sulphated and non-sulphated mucins were observed in traces in the seromucous end-pieces. The apical border of the lining cells of the intra- and interlobular ducts contained moderate to intense concentrations of acidic mucins. In young and adult animals, the epithelial cells showed mild to moderate reaction for neutral mucins. Goblet cells of the interlobular ducts exhibited the presence of mild and intense concentrations of sialo- and sulphomucins, respectively.

Gelatin absorbable implants are a practical and effective material for scleral buckling. They may be used in segmental scleral buckling, meridional implants, aphakic detachments, lower temporal dialyses and macular holes. We describe the technique and the results obtained in 53 patients.
A cucumber mosaic virus isolate was found to be associated with mottle crinkle and severe mosaic disease of Egyptian henbane (Hyoscyamus muticus L.). The virus has been characterized as an Indian isolate of cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) based on non-persistent transmission by aphid, presence of 28-nm isometric particles, capsid protein of 26 K and single-stranded tripartite RNA genome with a subgenomic RNA (RNA 4). There was no evidence of satellite RNA genome. The isolate showed a strong serological relationship with S and A strains of CMV (CMV-S and CMV-A) in double diffusion test. A band of the 26 K capsid protein was also detected by Western blot analysis using antibodies specific to CMV-S.
