The paper describes a cattle serum antigen (LdlA1) located on a low-density lipoprotein and detected by single radial diffusion. The specificity is inherited in a simple Mendelian manner and the gene controlling its synthesis is inherited independently from the one controlling the synthesis of the alpha 2 macroglobulin McA1 antigen.

All the demographic surveys on the centenarians have highlighted that females outnumber males. The centenarians' male/female (M/F) ratio reported by most studies ranges between 1:4 and 1:7. A puzzling 1:2 ratio was observed in Calabria, a Southern Italian region. To our knowledge only in Sardinia a similar phenomenon had been previously observed. We have therefore used the data of the Italian Institute of Statistics to figure out the centenarians' M/F ratio in the Italian regions. We found that this ratio gradually decreases from South to North. Such a result is certainly due to many factors. Thus, we have explored the possibility, it is also influenced by the genetic structure of the Italian population. In fact, the distribution of the centenarians' M/F ratio turned out to be significantly correlated with the genetic structure of the Italian population as outlined by the principal component analysis.
The possibility that four loci (REN, THO, PARP, SOD2) are associated with longevity was explored by comparing the genotypic pools of subjects older than 100 years with those of younger subjects matched for sex and geographic area (northern and southern Italy). The markers (all located within the respective gene) were HUMREN4; HUMTHO1; HUMPARP (gt)845nt; SOD2(C/T)401nt. In order to reduce the number of genotypes, multiallelic polymorphisms were recoded as diallelic according to allele size and frequency patterns (small: S, and large: L, alleles). A significant loss of LL homozygous genotypes was found at the THO locus in male but not in female centenarians with respect to matched controls. On the other hand no significant difference was found between case/control genotypic frequencies at REN, PARP, SOD2 loci. The latter loci therefore do not affect inter-individual variability in life expectancy (at least in terms of qualitative variants associated with the tested markers). However, the data is consistent with an association between the THO locus and longevity.
IgA2 serum levels were measured by ELISA in 120 healthy subjects from 40 nuclear families (both parents and one offspring). No sex-associated difference was observed. Moreover, the IgA2 serum levels proved to be significantly correlated in parent-offspring pairs (r = 0.55; P less than 0.001), while there was no significant correlation in mother-father pairs of the same family. The data suggest that the serum level of the IgA2 subclass is genetically controlled.
Immunoisoelectrofocusing (IIEF) reveals a microheterogeneity of human serum IgA controlled by an autosomal polymorphic gene, termed S. The microheterogeneity disappears when sialic acid is removed from serum glycoproteins by neuraminidase treatment. It can be postulated, therefore, that S encodes a sialyltransferase which attaches sialic acid at the outer prosthetic chains of IgA.
The XbaI Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) of the APOB gene at codon 2488 was investigated in a sample group from Southern Italy (165 subjects), taken from a population characterized by a low average level of cholesterolemia. The X2 allele (presence of XbaI cutting site), that in several groups was found to be associated with increased cholesterolemia, showed in Southern Italians a frequency of 39% which is significantly (P much less than 0.001) lower than that found in the majority of the Caucasoid groups so far tested (50%). However, an analysis of both cholesterol and APOB serum levels performed in a sample of 82 subjects, homogeneous for sex and age did not reveal any significant association between lipidemic parameters and APOB-XbaI genotypes.
Correlations of malignancy grade, immunologic phenotype and angiogenic capacity were studied in B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphomas grafted onto chorioallantoic membranes of chicken embryos. The angiogenic response elicited by the tumors was significantly greater than the response to normal lymph nodes, but it did not correlate with either the malignancy grade or the immunologic phenotype of the tumors. The elevated angiogenic capacity of neoplastic tissues is confirmed. The results also suggest that the extensive vasoproliferative response required by a rapidly growing tumor is not only controlled by the neoplastic cell population but, probably, by the host-response as well.
Recently, a method similar to ER.ICA has been proposed for the progesterone receptor (PgR) using two monoclonal antibodies, JZB39 and KD68, specific for human PgR and characterized by a molecular weight of 95 and 120 Kd, respectively. A series of 73 breast cancer patients was studied with regards to ER and PgR using both immunocytochemical (ICA) and biochemical (DCC) assays. Results showed no substantial differences between the two methods when considering common clinical-pathological parameters. Overall agreement between ICA and DCC methods was found: 79% for PgR and 78% for ER. A slight quantitative correlation was also observed between the "score values" of the ICA method and the Fmol content of ER and PgR using the Brave-Pearson test (r = 0.49 for PgR; r = 0.43 for ER). Specificity of PgR.ICA method was 77% for PgR and 72% for ER; sensitivity was 82% and 83%, respectively. The ICA method is a reliable technique to assess PgR presence as well as ER. Further studies are necessary to evaluate the prognostic role of nuclear PgR.
Five cases of malignant cerebellar astrocytoma observed during a seven-year period are reported. The analysis of the cases allows us to conclude that malignant cerebellar astrocytoma represents a true tumoral entity quite distinct from cerebellar glioblastoma as well as from medulloblastoma. A perfect correspondence between the histological malignancy and the duration of survival has been noted in all the cases.
This paper presents data on the distribution of IGHG1 phenotypes in three populations living in Italy (Albanians, Calabrians and Northern Italians). IGHG1 typing for the allotypes z, x, a, f has been performed by using standard antisera provided by the Central Laboratory of the Netherlands Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service (Amsterdam). The results are compared with those obtained for the same populations using alloantisera from polytransfused subjects and Behringwerke antisera. It is shown that the results obtained by using the different antisera are not in agreement. Moreover, standard antisera reveal that the IGHG1 za haplotype is more frequent in Albanians than in Northern Italians.
