50 colposcopic biopsies of cervical epithelium were studied, using a silver colloid technique. These comprised 28 cases of human papillomavirus infection of the cervix, 8 cases of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) I, 8 cases of CIN II, 6 cases of CIN III. The AgNOR mean number of the basal and parabasal cells of the cervical epithelium was significantly different in virus infected cells and in CIN. Different patterns of AgNOR distribution were observed: they were single and compact in virus infection without dysplasia whereas they appeared small and often loosely arranged in dysplastic lesions. Our data suggest that this simple technique is diagnostically useful in the evaluation of borderline lesions.
The most widely used ablative techniques in the therapy of benign cervical lesions are physical treatments with cauterization or laser vaporization; these are, however, usually used for the largest or symptomatic lesions. Many Authors suggest, after physical treatment, the use of topical chemotherapy in order to abolish any possible inflammatory reaction. The use of drugs such as polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) 5 mg (POLIDES 5--Farmigea), provided with reepithelialization and anticomplement action, seems to promote a quicker recovery of the cauterized or vaporized zone, avoiding, at the same time, the secondary inflammatory reaction. The Authors have assessed the quality of reepithelialization by means of PDRN 5 mg ovules of the cervical zone which has been previously subjected to laser vaporization or cauterization for benign cervical lesions or CIN I. The trial was performed with two groups of patients: Group A: laser vaporization, 45 patients, 23 of whom treated with PDRN and 22 with placebo. Group B: cauterization, 46 patients, 24 treated with PDRN and 22 with placebo. The treatment with PDRN 5 mg ovules started on the day of physical treatment and continued for twelve days. The examination of the patients, performed before the treatment (TO) included the following tests: bacteriological test; PAP-smear, colposcopic examination with eventual direct biopsy. The first follow-up (T 1) was performed after 14 days and included a Pap-smear, colposcopic examination and microcolpohysteroscopy (MC) carried out in the zone where physical treatment had been performed, in order to obtain a map of the reepithelialization process process.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The effectiveness of a new levo-norgestrel releasing intrauterine device is assessed in fourteen patients with histologically confirmed hyperplastic lesions of the endometrial mucosa. The morphologic response of the hyperplastic endometria to the action of the levo-norgestrel in this study explains the regression of the cases so treated.

The Authors report a case of a rare and very voluminous teratoma with uncommon location (the right cervico-facial region) and extracranial seat in a female newborn. The teratoma was excised in the 18th day of life. It showed cystic and solid lesions. The tissues were derived from the three germ layers and were prevalently mature; only a bit of them was represented by embryonic mesenchymal tissue. The baby, followed and checked up during all the first year of her life, showed a normal evolution and absence of recurrences.

Collagenous colitis is a clinico-pathological entity characterized by chronic diarrhoeas and deposition of collagen beneath the epithelium surface of large bowel. We revised 265 endoscopy biopsy specimens of the large bowel from 198 consecutive patients with "aspecific chronic colitis". Morphometric study showed that were not significant differences among various tracts in the same patients regarding to the thickness of basament membrane. It was more than 11.9 +/- 0.49 mu only in 13 pts (6.6%), while it was 3.96 +/- 1.4 mu in the others. Immunohistochemistry study confirmed the normality of subepithelial basement membrane and the below deposition of the large quantity of collagen IV.
