[Haemobilia as a special form of gastro-intestinal bleeding (author's transl)].

Nine patients with haemobilia were treated during a 17-year period (1958-1974), seven of them with postoperative haemobilia after operations on the biliary tract, and one with traumatic haemobilia. Three patients with intrahepatic injury after transhepatic drainage for inflammatory biliary-tract stricture or after extraction of intrahepatic biliary-tract stones with a Fogarty catheter were free of symptoms on conservative treatment alone. Of six operated patients one died from extensive hepatic necrosis after ligation of the main and right hepatic arteries, another two months after operation of septicaemia. The other patients have remained free of symptoms.

[Operative treatment of ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease and diverticulitis (author's transl)].

Operations and follow-up examinations were conducted on 106 patient with ulcerative colitis, 33 with colitis Crohn, and 163 with diverticulitis, at the University Clinics of Cologne and Munich. Overall mortality rates were 24.5% (n=26), 6.1% (n=2) and 16% (n=26), respectively. In the surgical treatment of ulcerative colitis the possibility of malignant degeneration and, in the case of Crohn's disease, prevention of recurrences must be taken into consideration. Whether Crohn's disease is a precancerous condition remains to be clarified. Choosing the optimal time for operative intervention is as important in diverticulitis as in ulcerative colitis. Because of the possibility of complications and the high risk of operation, early intervention is recommended for diverticulitis.

[Atypical suprarenal aortic stenosis as a cause of hypertension in young people (author's transl)].

In nine of ten hypertensive patients with "atypical" suprarenal aortic stenosis (aged 20 to 51 years, mean 28.5 years), operative treatment of the stenosis reduced blood pressure to normal. In the tenth patient, combined vascular and reno-parenchymal hypertension was effectively treated by drugs, the dosage of which could be reduced after resection. Aorto-aortic bypass was the operative procedure of choice because of its lower risk and better results than other methods. In a review of 346 cases of atypical coarcation reported in the literature, two-thirds were found to be located above or at the level of the renal arteries, causing marked hypertension. Surgical procedures and results in 136 operated cases are tabulated and discussed.

[Results of reconstructive vascular surgery (author's transl)].

This report is based on experiences with reconstructive vascular surgery for obliterative and aneurysmal vascular diseases in 5245 patients of the Surgical University Hospitals in Cologne and Munich during the last 15 years. An analysis of early and late results is given to illustrate the presnet standard of operative possibilities, but also their limitations in vascular diseases. This approach is used to give both vascular and general surgeons practical hints on procedure.
