[Digital radiography. Experiences with the SP system].

Digital radiography which would have to replace conventional radiography with equal or improved quality is the still missing link in the development of a fully digital imaging department of the future. Various attempts have been made to close this gap. This article describes the SP system, a large area detecting digital imaging system, originally designed by Fuji. Its components are the imaging plate, coated with a stimulable phosphor (SP), which is used like a conventional film-screen cassette, a laser-based image reader, the image processor and a laser-based image printer. After a six months' test in hospital routine, the advantages, shortcomings and possible improvements are discussed.

[Early experience with a large format image intensifier for thoracic, abdominal and peripheral angiography (author's transl)].

By the use of a 36 cm image intensifier, its position under the table top and its great focus-image intensifier distance radiation geometric conditions were produced which are identical with the full-size film technique. With this equipment angiographic examinations of the thorax, abdomen as well as extremities were possible with the help of indirect fluorography, In accordance with examinations at anatomical models it turned out that the detail perception of the image intensifier-series fluorography was almost comparable to conventional full size film technique. Aside from the lower radiation dose and the shorter exposure time indirect fluorography offered additional advantages: By means of the fluoroscopic control of the contrast medium and the fluoroscopically controlled exposure a reduction of the methodical procedure was possible with regard to numbers of exposures and series just as saving of time for the complete examination. The evaluation and clinical demonstration of the 100 mm films were critically tested in the daily routine work.

[Patient dosage load with the vidio amplifier technique in pediatric radiology (authors transl)].

The desired reduction of dosage with the indirect technique compared with the close up is only obtained if the vidio amplifier (i.e. 50 muR/picture) is adjusted exactly, if the input potential of 60 kV is not exceeded, particularly for infants, and no high kV grids are used. An adjustable diaphragm in front of the camera with the adjustment of the vidio amplifier and with the electron-optical changeover from, for example 9" to 5", would result in an additional reduction in dosage.
