Symptoms, social stratification and self-responsibility for health in the United States and West Germany.

This study compares the responses of a sample of Americans in Illinois and West Germans in North-Rhine Westphalia on the basis of symptom perception, symptom experience, physician utilization and health-locus-of-control. The hypothesis that as socioeconomic status increases, the more likely the individual is to manifest and behavior favorable toward self-control and acceptance of personal responsibility in health care matters was tested. The hypothesis was supported by the American data, but not the West German. Possible trends in West German society accounting for a significant lack of socioeconomic variance in illness behavior are discussed.

Complete cDNA-derived amino acid sequence of chick muscle creatine kinase.

cDNA clones of chick muscle creatine kinase mRNA were prepared by conventional procedures and then extended by primer extension to include the entire coding region of the mRNA. The nucleotide sequence of the cDNA clones permits, for the first time, determination of the complete sequence of the 381 amino acids comprising the muscle creatine kinase subunit of a higher vertebrate. In addition, available information regarding amino acid residues, intergral or proximal to the active site, allows tentative positioning of part of the active site within the primary sequence. Comparison of the chick muscle creatine kinase amino acid sequence with partial amino acid sequence for rat and rabbit muscle creatine kinase indicates that the primary structure of this enzyme is strongly conserved in evolution.

Molecular cloning and expression during myogenesis of sequences coding for M-creatine kinase.

Sequences complementary to muscle poly(A)+RNA were cloned in the plasmid pBR322 and the resulting colonies were screened by colony hybridization with labeled cDNA derived from skeletal muscle and smooth muscle (gizzard). The skeletal muscle-specific clones were further screened by RNA blotting hybridization for a muscle mRNA having the size expected for a putative type M creatine kinase (M-CK) mRNA. The remaining clones with the expected hybridization properties were finally characterized by hybrid-selected translation, and a cloned sequence was shown to contain DNA hybridizing to mRNA that could be translated into M-CK. This plasmid, pMCK1, was further characterized by restriction mapping. Blot analysis of total cell RNA from differentiating myogenic cell cultures showed accumulation of M-CK mRNA in cultures older than 42 hr but not in young little-differentiated cultures.

[Pathomorphology of the skeletal musculature of swine dying during transportation].

Pathomorphological studies were conducted into seven different muscles of 50 pigs that had died on transport to slaughterhouses. Established was the following percentual presence of acute disseminated hyaline-plaque degeneration and necrosis of muscle fibres: Group 1 with high frequency of pathological findings: M. biceps femoris, bright portion positively affected in 72 per cent of all cases, dark portion in 68 per cent; M. semimembranosus affected in 64 per cent; M. longissimus dorsi affected in 56 per cent. Group 2 with low to medium frequency of pathological findings: M. Quadriceps femoris affected in 26 per cent; M. semitendinosus, bright portion affected in 26 per cent, dark portion in 16 per cent; M. psoas major affected in 18 per cent. Group 3 without myopathy frequency: M. masseter. The rare occurrence of resorptive myositis (between zero and six per cent of all cases, depending on affected muscles) seems to confirm the young age of that myopathy which usually develops only under transport stress. Hyaline transverse ligaments (supercontractures) were not observed at all in the context of transport deaths (M. longissimus dorsi, M. biceps femoris--bright portion, M. semitendinosus--bright portion, M. masseter) or only in rare cases (M. quadriceps femoris in two per cent of all cases, M. semimembranosus in six per cent, M. semitendinosus--dark portion in six per cent, M. biceps femoris in 18 per cent, M. psoas major in 24 per cent). A comparison with earlier results on the frequency of muscle damage showed that hyaline-plaque degeneration and necrosis of muscle fibres occurred much more often in the context of normal slaughter without any transport and with much graver severity following different modes of transport. These conclusions and results are all relating to pigs which died on transport. The results are discussed, with reference to aetiology and pathogenesis of myopathies in swine caused by stress.

[Pathomorphological changes in the skeletal muscles (musculus longissimus dorsi) in swine following varied transport stresses and resting periods prior to slaughter].

The M. longissimus dorsi of 171 pigs were histologically examined for pathological signs. Acute hyaline-plaque degenerations and necrosis (hsD/N) in various degrees of manifestation were recorded from 42.7 and hyaline transverse ligaments (hQb) from 22.8 per cent of all cases. The occurrence of hsD/N following container transport was lower with significance (33.3 per cent) than that following lorry transport (50.5 per cent). The form of transport failed to have any substantive effect on the occurrence of hQb, the figures being 20.5 per cent for container and 24.7 per cent for lorry. Short resting periods, between 0.5 and 1.2 hours, were followed with significantly higher occurrence of hsD/N, as compared to longer resting periods, between five and eight or 23 hours. These pathological findings were not further reduced by extending the resting period from something between five and eight to 20 hours. The pathological hsD/N and hQb findings were recordable from both PSE pork (hsD/N = 51.4 per cent, hQb = 25.7 per cent) and from pork without any quality shortcomings (hsD/N = 39.7 per cent, hQb = 22.1 per cent), but the number of hsD/N cases in the context of PSE pork tended to be higher than that in high-quality pork. No sex dependence was established. The results are discussed under the aspect of aetiopathogenesis of stress-borne myopathy.

Genes and spacers of cloned sea urchin histone DNA analyzed by sequencing.

A cloned histone gene cluster of the highly reiterated type from the sea urchin Psammechinus miliaris was analyzed by DNA sequencing. More than half of the 6 kb repeat was sequenced, including coding regions of all five histones, some prelude and trailing sequences lying adjacent to the structural gense, and segments of the AT-rich spacer DNA. The gene cluster does not code for gonad-specific histone variants but may instead be active in early sea urchin development, as indicated by comparison to reference histones. The encoded histones seem not to be derived from longer precursor proteins, not is there any evidence for insert sequences within the coding regions. Sequence similarities exist among the putative ribosome-binding sites adjacent to the initiator codons of individual genes. The AT-rich spacer segments between the genes differ from each other, are made up from relatively simple nucleotide arrangements, but are not repetitious, and apparently do not code for additional large proteins.

Testing of roentgen film quality.

Evaluation of film quality is often based upon the film's characteristic curve. A practical test method implying radiography of sandpaper sheets has been devised, yielding crucial information about the quality, which cannot be derived from the characteristic curve. Since this test appears to give more valid information about film quality than conventional sensitometry, it is suggested that the test procedure should be standardised and used by the manufacturers.

[The arterial blood supply of the human mandible].

The arteries of 22 mandibles injected with Kallocryl M were examined. The first group consisted of mandibles with the full complement of teeth. At the inner side, there were numerous anastomoses between the submental artery, the sublingual artery, the ascending palatine artery and the mylohyoid ramus. Furthermore, the dental rami branched into the periost. At the outside, the mental artery as well as the submental and inferior labial arteries contributed to the arterial supply. In the second group of mandibles (with intact incisors), these war a marked reduction of the anastomoses of the inferior alveolar artery in the middle region. The third group of mandibles (which were edentulous) showed anastomoses of the submental and sublingual arteries in the region of the incisors. The outside was supplied by the submental and inferior labial arteries. The mental artery exislar artery was demonstrated in 4 cases. The reduction of anastomoses concerned the inferior alveolar artery.

[Morphometric analysis of the inner skull base and the brain stem on median frozen sections of the fetal head, between 14 and 40 weeks of gestational age].

1. In median sections through frozen heads of 75 human fetuses, between 14 and 40 weeks of age, a total of 12 finite lines was determined at the inner skull-base, at the brain-stem, and in relation of the brain-stem to the inner skull-base. The fetuses were classified into 5 age groups. The data were obtained by means of variance analysis. 2. So far there has not been any information on human fetuses and measured quantities in the available literature. Comparing the mean values of the finite lines of the above mentioned five age groups explains something about the increase of growth. 3. In evaluating the results obtained and comparing the qualitative data reported in the literature, the importance of the different development of medullary functional units on the one hand and the topographic changes in the sense of additive processes on the other hand is emphasized. 4. The comparatively larger increase in the standard deviations between the 29th and the 40th week of fetal age suggests the tendency towards a plateau that may be due to the full development of microstructural systems in the fields examined.

[Functional anatomy of the feeding apparatus of the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos L.) structure, movement, electro-myography and electro-neurography (author's transl)].

A causal model for the functioning of the beakapparatus of the mallard during straining is formulated on a qualitative basis. The starting point for this model is an abstraction of the analysed structure of the muscle, bone, ligament system. The system was studied by electromyography and cinematography of the movements. It was attempted to quantify the model. Connections with neurography are shown.
