Spectral evidence of interaction of spice constituents with hepatic microsomal cytochrome P-450.

Spectral evidence has been obtained of the interaction of constituents of two commonly used spices, capsicum and cinnamon, with hepatic microsomal cytochrome P-450. It is proposed that influences of spice constituents on hepatic mixed-function oxidase activities may merit consideration during the investigation of some health-related problems characteristic of, or peculiar to, a given region or cultural group. An example considered relates to the evaluation of certain 'traditional medicines'.

[Gardner's syndrome (author's transl)].

An exact history was taken and clinical, endoscopic and histologic studies were performed in 14 family members of a case of Gardner's syndrome with triple symptomatology documented with biopsy and autopsy findings. Among the symptom-free probands five cases of colonic polyposis and three cases with gastric polyps were found. All polyps were histologically adenomatous. Dysplasias grade I and II were found repeatedly, in one 16-year-old adolescent there was already severe dysplasia within the gastric mucosal polyps. A warning is given against sub-classification of familial colonic polyposis and other syndromes within the definition of Gardner's syndrome. In future during diagnostic investigations for cases of Gardner's syndrome isolated gastric polyposis should be sought for as well as monosymptomatic colonic polyposis. Diagnostic procedures and treatment should depend on endoscopic and histological findings. Regular follow-up with endoscopic biopsies are to be encouraged not only in the diseased cases but also in all family members available.

[Is the jejunoileal bypass still justified? (author's transl)].

The jejunoileal bypass for the treatment of extreme obesity is being increasingly criticized because of its severe metabolic complications. With the gastric bypass, developed by Mason in 1967, there now exists an operative alternative that is equivalent concerning weight reduction, but does not create such non-physiologic conditions of absorption, and therefore is not burdened with the severe metabolic disturbances of the jejunoileal bypass. Therefore the jejunoileal bypass should not be used any longer for the treatment of obesity.

Bacampicillin and ampicillin in urinary tract infections: a double-blind comparison of efficacy and tolerance.

A total of 100 hospitalized patients with upper and lower urinary tract infections were treated with bacampicillin or ampicillin. The treatment was double-blind and 50 patients were randomly allocated to each group, receiving 800 mg of bacampicillin or 2 g of ampicillin t. i. d. for ten days. The distribution by age and sex was similar in the two groups. Assessments of therapeutic response and tolerance were made two and six weeks after initiation of therapy. In 89% of the patients treated with bacampicillin and 68% of the ampicillin-treated patients both the bacteria and the symptoms were eliminated at the first follow-up visit three days after end of therapy. Relapse of reinfection occurred in 44% of the ampicillin-treated patients as compared to 7% in the bacampicillin-treated patients. Side-effects occurred significantly less frequently with bacampicillin compared with ampicillin (p less than 0.05). Treatment had to be stopped on account of side-effects in 16 patients treated with ampicillin compared with only four patients treated with bacampicillin.

Identification of S-(carboxymethyl)-L-cysteine and thiodiglycolic acid, urinary metabolites of 2,2'-bis-(chloroethyl)-ether in the rat.

S-(carboxymethyl)-L-cysteine (CMC) and thiodiglycollic acid (TGA) were identified by gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric measurements in the urine of rats after intraperitoneal injections of 2,2'-bis-(chloroethyl)-ether (BCEE). It is therefore probable that BCEE is O-dealkylated by a mixed-function oxidation. The hepatocarcinogenic effect of BCEE may be explained by the liberation of chloroacetaldehyde in vivo.

Determination of the biological parameters of bacterium-phage complexes.

The authors present a method of measurement and evaluation for continuous cultures of bacteria infected by virulent phages. By the comparison of the model describing the phage-bacterium interaction and their own experimental data they determined the following biological parameter values characterizing the interaction: the adsorption rate (mu), the expectation of the latency period (T) and its standard deviation ((sigma), the time required for lysis (d), the infection efficiency (eta) and the average burst size (C). The parameters were used for the determination of optimal cultivating conditions (maximum phage yield).

[One year of computed tomography in radiological specialist practice (author's transl)].

After the introduction of computed tomography through G. Hounsfield and its clinical further development by J. Ambrose, this method of examination has proved its importance especially with regard to examination of the skull and brain. Our aim is to reflect the results of the first year of computed tomography in radiological specialist practice. Our radiological activity had covered the fields of general radiology and nuclear medicine at the time when computed tomography was introduced.
