Empty sella syndrome and growth deficiency in childhood.

We describe four cases of empty sella syndrome in childhood associated with growth and neuroendocrine disorders. We note that empty sella syndrome probably presents with endocrine disorders more often in childhood than in adults and that its frequency seems to be underestimated.

Long-lasting suppression of prolactin secretion and rapid shrinkage of prolactinomas after a long-acting, injectable form of bromocriptine.

Since Corenblum reported in 1975 the first documented reduction of tumor size in two patients with macroprolactinoma, evidence has accumulated that bromocriptine causes shrinkage of PRL-secreting adenomas in most patients. Recently a long-acting form of bromocriptine (bromocriptine LA) was developed. A single dose of 50 mg i.m. decreases basal and sleep-related PRL secretion in normal subjects for 28 days. We treated 13 patients (8 women, 5 men) with PRL secreting tumors (5 macroadenomas and 8 microadenomas) with a single dose (50 mg) of bromocriptine LA. In the 5 patients with macroprolactinomas plasma PRL levels decreased markedly within 12 hours, reaching normal levels in only one patient. In all patients the suppression of PRL secretion lasted at least 28 days and the tumor size was reduced by 20% to 59% within 21 days after the injection. Visual fields improved in all 3 patients with abnormal vision prior to the injection. In one patient with bitemporal hemianopsia an almost normalization of the visual field was noted 24 hours after bromocriptine LA administration. In 7/8 patients with microprolactinomas plasma PRL levels decreased to within the normal range within 12 hours after the administration of bromocriptine LA. The normalization of PRL secretion lasted for at least 28 days. Menses resumed in all 6 women 7 to 41 days after the injection, galactorrhea disappeared in all 4 patients, and libido and potency become normal in both men with microprolactinomas. Patients treated with bromocriptine LA reported only short-lasting (1 hour - 2 days) mild or moderate adverse effects, consisting of dizziness (4 patients) and nausea (4 patients). Long-acting bromocriptine should be considered as the initial management for patients with PRL-secreting tumors. The use of bromocriptine LA could also overcome the compliance problems that occur in many patients soon after the initiation of oral bromocriptine therapy.

Trials of high frequency jet ventilation in preterm infants with severe respiratory disease.

Nine preterm newborn infants were maintained on conventional mechanical ventilation for respiratory diseases were given high frequency jet ventilation in the same inspired FiO2 for short periods (10-120 min). Lower mean airway pressures were used in high frequency jet ventilation (0.70 +/- 0.2 kPa versus 0.96 +/- 0.2 kPa in intermittent positive pressure ventilation), and peak inspiratory pressures were reduced from 2.06 +/- 0.4 to 1.38 +/- 0.24 kPa. Respiratory and haemodynamic data were compared with those obtained in intermittent positive pressure ventilation, PaO2 and PCO2 were similar, while an increase in pH and reduction of central venous pressure were observed during high frequency jet ventilation. This preliminary study indicates that high frequency jet ventilation provides good ventilatory support, at least for short periods, with reduced airway pressures, and could be a promising technique for prevention of acute and chronic pulmonary barotrauma.

[Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and succinate dehydrogenase in metastatic cells of Lewis lung carcinoma].

By the experimental model of the Lewis lung carcinoma we studied the activity of glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenesis (G6PDH) and succinic-dehydrogenesis (SDH) in the carcinoma itself, the lung metastases, the peripheral blood. A set of carcinoma, lung sections, peripheral blood smears were studied by histochemical techniques day by day since the 3rd day to the 15th one after the carcinoma grafting. The reported results allow us to conclude that G6PDH looks like a determinant of metastatic cell survival and growth and can be regarded as a marker of metastatic cells in the present model.

Kinetics of the spread of the Yoshida ascites hepatoma cancer cells through various organs of the rat.

In the present paper the attempt is pursued to provide a self-consistent interpretation for the quantitative measurements of the amount of neoplastic cells found at different anatomic sites and at various times after intraperitoneal injection. The model, employing a system of 8 linear differential equations with constant coefficients, can be fitted by means of a special program for a small processing system equipped with an 8-bit microprocessor and 48 KB of central memory.

[Preliminary findings on tumor cells in various organs of rats after transplantation of Yoshida hepatoma ascites cells].

In previous papers the techniques for the study of the migration pattern of tumor cells through the host tissues were described. In the present communication studies utilizing Yoshida ascitic tumor cells are referred. Neoplastic cells morphologically identified were counted in several organs at various times of the development of the tumor transplantation. This method appears to provide interesting indications about the dynamics of the neoplastic spread through the tissues.

[Effect of 22Na on the zeta potential of malignant cells].

Membrane changes of Yoshida tumor ascites cells, "in toto" or centrifuged, were studied means of cytopherometric and istoautoradiographic techniques, by using various specific activities of 22 NaCl for different time intervals. This study shows the existence of a relationship between cellular membranes and cytoplasm labelled electrophoretic mobility and the Zeta potentials of the tumor cells. The presence of ascites liquid appears to be critical.

Histoautoradiographic investigation of the invasive dissemination of Ehrlich ascites tumor cells through the organs of the mouse.

In this paper the attempt has been pursued to quantify by a well planned experimental technique the ability of the neoplastic cells to spread around in vivo through various organs of laboratory animals. By making use of the histoautoradiographic techniques the incorporation of 3H thymidine either by the normal and by the neoplastic cells has been investigated at many different anatomical sites in Ehrlich ascites tumor-bearing mice. The method has been shown to be well suited also for the quantitative characterization of the spreading dynamics of the cancer cell population.

[Phytotoxicity of di,sec.butylamides of halogenoalkoxybenzoic acids].

N,N-di,sec.butylamides of halogenated alkoxybenzoic acids were prepared and tested for phytotoxic activity. The corresponding acids and a series of N-alkyl- and N,N-dialkylamides of 2-methoxy-3,5-dichlorobenzoic acid were studied in parallel. The phytotoxicity of these substances was tested against seven representative weeds and some crop plants using both pre- and post-emergence test at doses of 6 kg/ha or lower. The amides studied proved more strongly phytotoxic on absorption through the root than through the foliage. Furthermore selective phytotoxic activity against two important infesting graminacae, Echinochloa crus-galli R.S. and Setaria glauca L. was observed. Some of these compounds showed low toxicity or were tolerated by crop plants. The results obtained with this series of amides of 2-methoxy-3,5-dichlorobenzoic acid confirm the importance of the sec.butyl group on N for the appearance of selective phytotoxicity.
