[Developmental ophthalmic ischemia. Regression after emergency extra-intracranial anastomosis].

Recently several publications have insisted on the ability of E.I.C.B. in reversing ocular manifestations due to chronic ophthalmic ischemia, when surgical carotid desobstruction is considered impossible or hazardous. Revascularization with E.I.C.B. can also be useful--on emergency --in case of "in evolution" ophthalmic ischemia, due to low pressure perfusion in the carotid-ophthalmic territory, to save vision. The authors report the case of a patient, presenting an optico-pyramidal syndrome "in evolution", secondary to occlusion of the left carotid artery associated with stenotic lesions in the ophthalmic artery, reversed by E.I.C.B. performed on emergency. Left visual acuity and diastolic retinian arterial pressure --respectively inferior to 1/10 and unmeasurable, before operation--raised up to 6/10 and 18 mmHg within the first twelve post-operative days and reached 8/10 and 38 mmHg after eleven weeks. This case report aims at pointing out the capacity of E.I.C.B. performed on emergency in reversing ophthalmic ischemia--"in evolution"--before constitution of irreversible lesions.

[Actinomycotic brain abscess. (about four observations) (author's transl)].

The authors report four observations of actinomycotic brain abcess. One patient with multiple hemispheric abcesses and with stomatologic and pulmonary lesions, one with seemingly primary cerebellar abcess, one with associated hemispheric abcess associated with pneumopathy. About these four cases, they discuss the role of actinomycosis in infectious diseases of the central nervous system, and the elements necessary for the diagnosis. The neurological syndrom is not specific, but the discovery of visceral lesions is an excellent argument. From the histological point of view, the discovery of "granules" containing the bacteria conforms the diagnosis by special colorations. From the bacteriological point of view, the isolation of the germ is easy but its specific identification necessitates special techniques. The diagnosis of actinomycosis is indispensible to begin a correct treatment. For the authors, this treatment must associate surgical excision of the most extensive lesions and adapted antibiotherapy for more than four months.

[Reversal of human ophthalmic vein blood flow : selective cooling of the brain].

Direction of blood flow in angularis oculi veins was recorded in humans. In mild hypothermia, blood flow was weak and directed from brain to face. In hyperthermia, however, blood flowed rapidly in the opposite direction, angularis oculi vein collecting cool facial blood and supplying cavernous sinus. Therefore selective cooling of human brain is possible.

[Multiple erosive discopathies associated with ankylosing spondylitis (author's transl)].

The authors report a case of ankylosing spondylitis affecting a woman with low-back pains. Although initial X-rays did not show any lesions of the spine, one year later, radiographs prove the existence of multiple lesions mimicking spondylodiscitides and characterized by erosions diffusely involving end-plates of cervical, dorsal and lumbar vertebrae. Surgical biopsy at the lumbar site provides an histological evidence of non specific inflammatory lesions.

[Reliability of the results of the ultrasonic hemodynamic recording (Doppler effect) in the diagnosis of cerebral ishemic ischemia of carotid origin].

The Doppler ultrasound diagnosis of carotid artery stenosis (asymetrical systolic and diastolic flows; elevated resistance index: ratio of flow pulse amplitude to systolic and diastolic values; flow reversal in the ophtalmic artery) is compared, in 52 patients, to the clinical, angiographic (40 patients) an surgical findings and to the peroperative measure of intra-arterial pressure and flow (30 patients). Its reliability is proved as a guide for angiographic exploration and for postoperative watching, but it is restricted to great vessels (cervical carotid artery) and is unable to detect ulcerated plate without stenosis.

[Impact of the cellular concentration of milk in goats on its production and its composition].

Using records from the Milk Registration Organization for 254 dairy-goat farms located in western France, the economical impact of mammary gland inflammation on milk yield and composition was measured after 200 days of lactation. This assessment was performed in groups of goats belonging to the same farm and the same breed and having the same parity. Three levels of somatic cell count (SCC) were defined in order to discriminate goats on the basis of the intensity of inflammatory reaction of their udder: < 750,000 cells/mL (CCI1), between 750,000 and 1,750,000 cells/mL (CCI2), > 1,750,000 cells/mL (CCI3). From 404 groups characterized by an average number of 12,4 CCI1 goats and 14,2 (CCI2 + CCI3) goats, the average milk yield of the goats whose SCC was superior to 750,000 cells/mL was inferior to that of the CCI1 goats in 79.2% of the groups. In a sub-sample of 366 groups, the average loss of milk production for the CCI2 goats compared to the CCI1 ones was 55 kg. In an other sub-sample of 41 groups, the milk production average loss of the CCI3 goats reached 132 kg. For all of the 404 groups, (CCI2 + CCI3) goats had a lower fat content of 0.3 g/kg and in contrast a higher protein content of 0.6 g/kg. A second evaluation using a multidimensional variance analysis model in a population of 20796 goats showed the same results.

[Detection of caprine arthritis encephalitis virus in sperm of experimentally infected bucks].

Shedding of caprine arthritis encephalitis virus (CAEV) was assessed in semen and blood mononuclear cells of six bucks (four boers and two saanens) experimentally contaminated with a viral strain (CAEV Cork) and on three non-infected controls. CAEV was identified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in blood mononuclear cells of all infected animals but only in seminal fluid and non-spermatic cells of one buck and in non-spermatic cells of another. Presence of CAEV in semen could have implications in the dissemination and control of the disease.
