Serological response of multiple sclerosis patients and controls to 6/94-parainfluenza virus.

The serological responses of 195 multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and 251 controls were tested against 6/94-parainfluenza virus, which was previously isolated from brain tissue of two patients with MS. The hemagglutination-inhibition titers of greater than or equal to 1: 128 were found more frequently in MS patients (21.5%) than in controls (14.0%). However, the geometric mean titers did not differ between these two groups. The present study concludes that a causal relationship of 6/94-virus to MS, based on a specific immune response, is improbable, although it does not exclude the possibility of a pathogenetic significance of the agent in the cases from which the autopsy material was derived.

[The force flow in hip joint-endoprostheses (author's transl)].

The mechanical force flow distribution produced by the hip joint endoprosthesis in the remaining, living femur and its deviation from that of the natural bone have a considerable influence on the quality of the bone-endoprosthesis compound and its duration of life. The loads are calculated for the natural bone as the reference system as well as the compound with conventional endoprostheses and a new type, the Tension-band-Endoprosthesis (R-G). For the calculation the finite element method is used by application of three-dimensional tetrahedron elements. It becomes apparent that in the case of the R-G-Endoprosthesis the induced stresses within the medial range of the remaining bone are far less unphysiological than in the case of the conventional endoprosthesis.

[Epilepsy and Dupuytren's contracture--a syntropy of 2 diseases?].

Dupuytren's contracture was observed in 21,6 percent of 524 patients with epilepsy. This combination is characterised by a steadily progression by relatively benign course with a consequenly low frequency of operation and rate of recurrence. Possible genetic association has to be taken into consideration, because idiopathic epilepsy is the type most frequently found with Dupuytren's contracture. In this material no correlation has been found between Dupuytren's contracture and liver disease. Diabetes mellitus and other aetiologic factor which have been suggested. The duration of epilepsy and the medication given have not been analysed.

[Biological effect of bariumsulfate as contrast material in bone cement. An animal study on rabbit femora (author's transl)].

The investigations presented in this paper concern the question of toxicity of Bariumsulfate as an ingredient of bone-cement. In 6 rabbits the medullary cavity of the right femur was filled with bone-cement which contained Bariumsulfate as X-ray contrast ingredient and the left one with BaSO4-free bone-cement. 4 1/2 months post operationem the femura were investigated by histological and microradiographic methods. The status of both sides was compared. On the BaSO4-containing side regularly necrotic lamellar bone structures in the zones of osteogenesis and single disseminated necroses are found which are not caused by the primary lesion occuring during the implantation procedure. Additionally the zone of primary lesions which is found on both sides was more extensive at the BaSO4-containing side.

["Zuggurtungs"-hip joint endoprosthesis (author's transl)].

On the basis of theoretical and experimental investigations to the problem of endoprosthetic replacement of the hip joint and the forces concerning the anchorage of the prosthesis a new model of prosthesis was developed and realized for practical use. In this paper this new "Zuggurtungs-Hüftendoprothese" and the biomechanical principles are described in detail. The biomechanically derived postulations realized in the new prosthesis which are of primary importance to avoid the mechanical complications of loosening and breaking of the prosthesis are also decisive when optimal materials are used. They allow the implantation without bone cement by the primary acievable stable anchorage.
