Isotherms of Capillary Condensation Influenced by Formation of Adsorption Films.

Isotherms of capillary condensation are often used to determine the vapor sorption capacity of porous adsorbents as well as the pore size distribution by radii. In this paper, for calculating the volume of capillary condensate and of adsorption films in a porous body, an approach based on the theory of surface forces is used. Adsorption isotherms and disjoining pressure isotherms of wetting films are presented here in an exponential form discussed earlier. The calculations were made for straight cylindrical capillaries of different radii and slit pores of different width. The mechanisms of capillary condensation differ in cylindrical and slit pores. In cylindrical pores capillary condensation occurs due to capillary instability of curved wetting films on a capillary surface, when film thickness grows. In the case of slit pores, coalescence of wetting films formed on opposite slit surfaces proceeds under the action of attractive dispersion forces. Partial volumes of liquid in the state of both capillary condensate and adsorbed films are calculated dependent on the relative vapor pressure in a surrounding media. Copyright 2000 Academic Press.

Possible virus contaminants in tissue banking.

The importance of transplantation in clinical medicine is still increasing. Risks by transmission of infections agents by virus contaminated transplants with following diseases are most feared. Anamnesis and course of spectacular cases by unconventual viruses (Creutzfeld-Jakob), pathogens of AIDS and rabies and transmission by different routes have been analysed. The necessity of legal directives for blood and tissue banks has to be stressed.

[Ego function rating by the specialist working alone in neurology and psychiatry].

Bellak and coworkers' "Ego-Function" rating was performed at a neuropsychiatric outpatients department by having an interview that was recorded once on tape analyzed by the same rater at intervals of 16 +/- 6 months using an estimation scale divided into seven main points. The result shows a high degree of uniformity in assessing the following functions: Reality testing, judgement, feeling for reality of oneself and the world, control of drives and affects, relationship to objects, ability to think, use of fantasy for solving problems, protection from stimuli, defence function, autonomic function, synthetic integrative function and feeling of competence. The most important result is that the rating can be used to good effect by neurologists and psychiatrists working alone.

[Raised plasma glucagon levels in obesity (author's transl)].

Plasma glucagon levels were measured in 129 grossly obese patients with 77 +/- 29% excess weight according to Broca. A significantly raised basal glucagon level (179 +/- 7 pg/ml) was found when compared with normal weight controls (109 +/- 7 pg/ml). Weight reduction of 9.1 +/- 3.8 kg with reduction of glucose-stimulated hyperinsulinaemia from 97 +/- 12 microU/ml to 62 +/- 6 microU/ml had no influence on hyperglucagonaemia. A subgroup of obese patients with hypertriglyceridaemia (270 +/- 24 mg/dl) and glucose intolerance had particularly high plasma glucagon levels (198 +/- 12 pg/ml). It seems that these patients have a resistance to glucagon in addition to a marked insulin resistance.

[Questionaire tests to assess student's troubles in general practioner's and psychologist's advisory centres (author's transl)].

The correlations between the ENR-test (Brengelmann and Brengelmann) and the VELA-test (Fahrenberg) result in a highly significant coincidence of the dimensions neuroticism and anatomic instability with the categories A until F or Kühn's questionnaire test of student's troubles (QST). The ENR- and VELA-tests are suitable as a screening for mass examinations. In therapeutic institutions engaging not especially with the problems of student's troubles and failness, these tests should be preferred, but in special psychological advisory centres for students Kühn's QST is indispensable.

[Biology of influenza viruses].

Studies were conducted into antigenic variability, the most characteristic and unique parameter of influenza virus, with particular attention being given to its dependence on and correlations with virus structure, virus polypeptides, and antigenic components of the envelope. Emphasis was laid on major phases of the replication cycle, such as the phenomena of drift and shift as well as their possible mechanisms and epidemiological bearings.
