Serological relationships between certain avian and animal paramyxoviruses.

An avian paramyxovirus designated Robin/Hiddensee/19/75 proved to be related to the Yucaipa virus group in cross haemagglutination inhibition test (HIT). Whereas the prototype parainfluenza viruses did not react with the antiserum raised against the Robin virus, a newly isolated bovine parainfluenza 3 virus was shown to be inhibited up to half the homologous titre. Possible antigenic relationships between avian, mammalian and human paramyxoviruses are discussed.

[Evaluation of the incidence of congenital rubella in GDR].

Annual number of congenital rubellas in GDR was evaluated by means of a mathematic model. Dates of inmunity rate of rubella in L. and P. districts obtained by means of haemagglutination inhibition reaction were taken into account. From these dates of a number of possible primary cases of rubella infection in wifes in the first 3 months of pregnancy as well as literary dates on mean number of monsters determined after the infection, i.e. 10--15--25% cases, were evaluated. There were obtained in relation with different mean numbers of monsters 37--56--93 cases of congenital rubellas for live born children from mothers at the age of 14 to 45 years. It results in total that the incidence of disease for live born children from mothers up to 45 years, is 0,2--0,5%, i.e. 2--5 children with congenital rubella on 10 000 live born children. Compared with literary data, it results a good correlation between proper evaluations and numbers of congenital rubella incidence quoted by other authors. In view of these evaluations, a conclusion to introduce protective rubella vaccination, is fully justified.

The measles eradication programme in the German Democratic Republic.

After 3 years of intensive preparations the Ministry of Health of the German Democratic Republic started a national measles eradication programme in 1967. Vaccination was at first voluntary, but became compulsory in 1970. Through a vaccination campaign using Leningrad-16/SSW attenuated live vaccine, the disease was virtually eliminated throughout the country by 1972. In 1973 and 1974 only sporadic cases of measles were observed. The number of vaccination failures was negligible. Combined immunization against measles and poliomyelitis provoked no unusual reactions, and the difference between the seroconversion rates following combined or separate immunization was not statistically significant.

Etiological relationship between several respiratory viruses and acute respiratory diseases in 1973 in the GDR.

The role of some important respiratory viruses (influenza A, B, parainfluenza, adeno and mycoplasma) in morbidity due to acute respiratory diseases during 1973 in the GDR is analysed on account of serological data (CFR) obtained with paired sera (a -5 percent of all cases comprising all age groups) and virus isolations. The serological surveillance provides an important base for evaluating the significance of respiratory agents for the development of the morbidity due to ARD.
