Air-borne fungi in the air of Barcelona (Spain). II. The genus alternaria.

The genus Alternaria Nees formed one of the more important components of the fungus population of the air at Barcelone (Spain), during a two-year study, from February 1976 through January 1978. Results were based only on studied of colonies obtained by gravity-exposed plates. The occurrence of this genus was greatly affected by climatic conditions. In general. however, Alternaria appeared to prefer warmer weather. A total of six species of Alternaria was identified, of which, Alternaria alternata (Fries) Keissler was by far the commonest, representing 71.3% of all colonies.

Subunit interactions of Glycera dibranchiata hemoglobin.

The coelomic cells of the polychaete annelid Glycera dibranchiata contain two hemoglobins. The monomer hemoglobin fraction is composed of one major component and two minor components as determined by starch gel electrophoresis and isoelectrofocusing, but is homogeneous as to subunit size as demonstrated by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The polymer hemoglobin fraction has and initial molecular weight of Mn = 125,000 as determined by osmometry, but exhibits an increased state of aggregation upon storage. The quaternary structure of the polymer is constituted of monomeric subunits in a non-covalent state of aggregation as demonstrated by its subunit dissociation inthe presence of propyl urea. The oxygen affinity of the polymer is lower than the monomer but increases with deaggregation. The Bohr effect is present only in the polymer. Cooperativity is also characteristic of the polymer and is pH-dependent. Interestingly, cooperativity increases with intermediate states of polymer deaggregation. By far, the main organic phosphate component of the coelomic red cells is ATP accompanied by small amounts of ADP and GTP. No modulating effect of ATP on the oxygen equilibrium of either polymer or total hemolysate was found.

Complement fixation by Rh blood group antibodies.

Rh blood group antibodies normally do not fix complement. Rh positive intact red blood cells treated with papain do not lyse when incubated with corresponding antibody and complement. This study was done to determine if complement fixation occurs when antibodies were combined with Rh positive red blood cell ghosts untreated or treated with papain. Complement fixation was observed with IgG anti-D, anti-DC and anti-c when papain treated ghosts were used. No complement fixation or a smaller degree of it was observed in the case of untreated Rh positive red blood cell ghosts when incubated with similar anti-Rh antibodies. It is concluded that the papain treatment of Rh positive red blood cell ghosts, possibly by inducing aggregation of antigen sites, allowed complement binding by Rh antibodies.

Determination of aflatoxin M1 in milk and milk products contaminated at low levels.

A new method is described for the determination of aflatoxin M1 in milk and dairy products by thin layer chromatography. The main characteristic is the extraction system using an alkaline solution. Lipids are removed by centrifuging at low temperatures, and the aflatoxins are then extracted with CHCl3. The method has 2 options: Technique II (detection limit 0.02 ppb) requires cleanup on a chromatographic column; this is not necessary in Technique I (detection limit 0.1 ppb). The recovery rate in both techniques is over 92.8% in milk and yoghurt. This method may also be used for other aflatoxins. Because of the advantages of the method, Technique II is recommended for aflatoxin M1 control in milk, where a low detection limit is necessary. Technique I is proposed for experimental aflatoxin production studies in dairy products, which require analysis of a large number of samples but which do not require a very low detection limit.

[Acute glomerulonephritis in children. I. Clinical manifestations].

The symptoms and short-term evolution of 617 patients with acute glomerulonephritis are discussed. Edema was the most frequent symptom (93%) at the time that gross hematuria was only present in 65% of cases. On the other side, heart failure was detected in 33% of patients and neurological symptoms in 6%. Short-term follow-up of 381 of these patients show that microscopic hematuria cleared up after six months in 73% of cases, but lasted more than one year in only 4% of patients.
