Plasma fibronectin in peripheral arterial disease.

When compared to values obtained in 24 age-matched normal weight normolipidemic control subjects, plasma fibronectin level was not significantly changed in the 28 patients with peripheral arterial disease, although endothelial cell-derived factor VIII related antigen was found to be obviously increased. On the other hand the 15 patients with obliterative atherosclerosis of the lower limbs who were hyperlipidemic (mainly hypertriglyceridemic) displayed a plasma fibronectin level (46.3 +/- 2.8 mg/dl) which was higher than the mean values recorded in both control subjects (36.2 +/- 1.66 mg/dl) and in normolipidemic patients with peripheral arterial disease (34.5 +/- 4.14 mg/dl). The results suggest that an increased level of plasma fibronectin should be connected rather to a peculiar pattern of hepatic protein synthesis occurring in overweight and hypertriglyceridemic subjects than to a release of this glycoprotein from an ongoing arterial lesion.

[The effect of some beta-blocking drugs on plasma renin activity, platelet adhesiveness and dilute blood clot lysis time in patients with essential arterial hypertension].

Propranolol (160--240 mg/24 h) and Oxprenolol (80--240 mg/24 h) were given for different periods of time to 13 and, respectively, 7 patients with essential arterial hypertension stage II. Both these beta-blocking drugs induced a significant fall in plasma renin activity : after ten days of treatment, platelet adhesiveness decreased in the patients with a basal level over 50% and increased in those with basal level below 30% (p < 0.01). When this treatment was given for 30 consecutive days, platelet adhesiveness decreased even in the latter patients. The drugs were also found to accelerate dilute blood clot lysis time in patients who presented a delayed lysis time before therapy. Thus, it is inferred that both propranolol and oxprenolol eliminate, at least partly, several factors involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, a frequent complication of essential arterial hypertension.

Serum zinc and copper in patients with cerebral vascular disease.

Serum Zn and Cu was investigated in 67 patients with cerebral infarction (CI), in 10 with cerebral hemorrhage (CH), in 14 with transient ischemic attack (TIA) and in 58 control subjects (C). Serum Zn concentration is significantly lower in patients with CH than in C (p < 0.001), and serum Cu is significantly higher than in C in patients with CI (p < 0.005). In patients with CI and in C serum Zn concentration decreased with advancing age. The serum Zn concentration decreased significantly in patients with CI during hospitalisation (p < 0.001), probably due to low intake and insufficient absorption. In patients with CI a significant correlation was found between low levels in serum Zn, on the one hand, and serum cholinesterase and proteinemia, on the other hand. This suggests a diminution of hepatic synthesis of proteins in these patients.

Free radicals, ceruloplasmin, and copper concentration in serum and aortic tissue in experimental atherosclerosis.

It has been suggested that the increase in concentration of blood lipid peroxides may be a risk factor for atherosclerosis. Our research was conducted to study the effect of cholesterol feeding on lipid peroxides, ceruloplasmin, HDL-cholesterol, serum unesterified fatty acids, and copper concentration in serum and aortic tissue in rats. In the animals fed a cholesterol-supplemented diet, the mean values of serum lipid peroxide, ceruloplasmin, serum copper, and unesterified fatty acids were increased significantly (p < 0.01) as compared to the control group. At the same time, HDL-cholesterol concentration was significantly decreased in rats fed a diet enriched with cholesterol (p < 0.01) compared to the control group. A significant decrease of copper concentration in aorta was also observed in these animals versus controls. Correlations between ceruloplasmin and lipid peroxides as well as copper were statistically significant in these animals. At the same time, antioxidant activity in blood was two times higher as compared to controls. Results of this study provide the support for applying these determinations in atherosclerosis monitoring.
