Comparative study of the hypercoordinate ions C7H9+ and C8H9+ by the ab initio/GIAO-CCSD(T) method.

A comparative study of the hypercoordinate square-pyramidal carbocations C7H9+ and C8H9+ was performed by the ab initio/GIAO-CCSD(T) method. The structures and 13C NMR chemical shifts of the cations were calculated at the GIAO-CCSD(T)/tzp/dz//MP2/cc-pVTZ level. The bishomo square pyramidal structure 1 was calculated for C7H9+ at the MP2/cc-pVTZ level. The calculated 13C NMR chemical shifts of structure 1 agree extremely well with the experimental values. However, unlike for C7H9+ both the bishomo square pyramidal structure 3 and the trishomocyclopropenium type structure 4 were found to be minima on the potential energy surface of C8H9+. They are very close energetically with cation 3, only 0.7 kcal/mol less stable than cation 4 at the MP2/cc-pVTZ//MP2/cc-pVTZ + ZPE level. Neither structure 3 nor 4 yields NMR spectra that agree with experiment. However, a weighted average of the two reproduces the observed NMR spectrum of C8H9+ (at -80 degrees C) quite well.

Facile synthesis of TMS-protected trifluoromethylated alcohols using trifluoromethyltrimethylsilane (TMSCF3) and various nucleophilic catalysts in DMF.

Organofluorine compounds are becoming increasingly important in different fields, such as material science, agro chemistry, and the pharmaceutical industry. Nucleophilic trifluoromethylation is one of the widely used methods to incorporate a trifluoromethyl moiety into organic molecules. We have carried out extensive studies to develop varieties of easily accessible nucleophilic catalysts to promote such reactions. TMS-protected trifluoromethylated alcohols were prepared from both aldehydes and ketones in excellent yields using catalytic amount of amine N-oxide. Carbonate and phosphate salts also showed efficient catalytic activity toward this reaction. These reactions were highly solvent dependent, and DMF was found to be the most suitable one among the various solvents studied. All these reactions proceeded under very mild conditions, giving clean products and avoiding the use of any fluoride initiators or expensive catalysts, and extremely water-free conditions. The mechanism for the reaction is discussed in detail. DFT calculations were performed on the possible reaction intermediates using the Gaussian 03 program at B3LYP/6-311+G* level to support the proposed mechanism.

Ab Initio/GIAO-CCSD(T) study of bicyclic and related strained olefins. Structures and 13C NMR chemical shifts.

Bicyclic and related strained olefins were studied by the ab initio/GIAO-CCSD(T) method. Structures and (13)C NMR chemical shifts of the olefins were calculated using ab initio/GIAO-CCSD(T) method. The delta(13)C of the olefinic carbons of the yet unknown bicyclo[1.1.0]but-1,3-ene 1 and bicyclo[2.1.0]pent-1(4)-ene 2 were computed to be 69.4 and 212.4, respectively, at the GIAO-CCSD(T)/qzp/tzp//MP2/cc-pVTZ level. The delta(13)C of the olefinic carbons of the intriguing (larger and also yet unknown) tricyclo[3.3.1.0(3,7)]non-3(7)-ene 6 and cubene 7 were calculated to be 172.5 and 187.4, respectively, at the GIAO-CCSD(T)/tzp/dz//MP2/cc-pVTZ level. In a related study, the relative energies of the various conformers of ethylene were computed and were found to correlate extremely well with the (13)C NMR chemical shifts, reflecting the linear dependence of the (13)C NMR chemical shifts on the internal strain of the molecules.

BF3.2CF3CH2OH (BF3.2TFE), an efficient superacidic catalyst for some organic synthetic transformations.

BF3.2CF3CH2OH complex was found to be a very effective superacidic catalyst comparable in acid strength to at least that of 100% anhydrous sulfuric acid for various acid-catalyzed organic transformations such as isomerizations, rearrangements, ionic hydrogenation of various ketones, and aromatics with triethylsilane and nitration of aromatics with metal nitrate. Studies of the pivalaldehyde-methyl isopropyl ketone rearrangement and the benzopinacol to phenanthrene transformation suggest that the complex has an acidity comparable to that of 100% anhydrous sulfuric acid. The structure and properties of the 1:2 boron trifluoride-trifluoroethanol complex have been further studied using NMR (1H, 13C, 19F, 11B) and DFT calculations at the B3LYP/6-311++G//B3LYP/6-31G level.

Implications of changing national policies on land use in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh.

Land use in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) of Bangladesh had undergone changes over the past several centuries. The landscape, which was mostly covered with forest with interspersed shifting cultivation plots until the beginning of the colonial period, has gradually changed into a landscape with a blend of land uses. Overall, the forest area has gradually declined, while the area under shifting cultivation and sedentary agriculture has expanded. The process of the change was multi-directional. National forestry, land use, land taxation, population migration policies, and development activities, such as construction of a hydroelectric dam and roads, played an important role in this process. Shifting cultivation had inflicted little damage on the forest until the beginning of the colonial period. The pace of deforestation accelerated with the nationalization of forests which abolished tribal people's customary use and management rights to the forest, and allowed large-scale commercial logging both legally and illegally. The pace was further intensified by the policy encouraging population migration to CHT and construction of a reservoir on the Karnafuli River. Efforts were made to replace shifting cultivation with more productive types of sedentary agriculture. However, much change could not take place in the absence of secure land rights, supportive trade policies, and the required support services and facilities, including infrastructure. Locationally suitable land use evolved in areas where transportation facilities were available and farmers were granted land title with the necessary extension services and credit facilities. These findings have important policy implications for the promotion of environmentally and economically sound land use in CHT.

Theoretical study of AlH(2+)n (n=1-7) dications.

The structures and stability of AlH(2+)n (n = 1-7 )dications were calculated at the ab initio MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory. The dications AlH(2+) 1 and AIH(2+2) 2 were characterized to be unstable thermodynamically. However, these and the stable dications, AlH(2+)n (n = 3-7) 3-7 have considerable kinetic barriers for deprotonation. Each of the structures 3-7 contains one or more two-electron three-center (2e-3c) bonds. Aluminum atoms of these dications carry most of the positive charges, as indicated by NBO charge calculations.

Ab initio/GIAO-CCSD(T) study of propenoyl (H2C=CH-CO+) and isopentenoyl ((CH3)2C=CH-CO+) cations and their superelectrophilic protonated dications.

Structures of superelectrophilic protonated propenoyl (H2C=CH-COH2+) and isopentenoyl ((CH3)2C=CH-COH2+) dications and their parent cations were calculated using ab initio methods at the MP2/6-311+G and MP2/cc-pVTZ levels. Energies were calculated using Gaussian-2 (G2) theory. The alpha-carbon (Calpha) protonated 3 and 7 were found to be the global minima for protonated propenoyl and isopentenoyl dications, respectively. 13C NMR chemical shifts of the cations were also calculated using the GIAO-CCSD(T), GIAO-MP2 and GIAO-SCF methods. 13C NMR chemical shifts of the related tert-butyl cation ((CH3)3C+) and protonated tert-butyl dication ((CH3)2CCH4(2+)) were also computed at the same level to compare and explore the effect of the additional charge in dications.

The question of C- vs. O-silylation of ketenes: electrophilic triethylsilylation of diphenylketene.

Electrophilic triethylsilylation of diphenylketene leads to exclusive C-silylation giving the diphenyl(triethylsilyl)acetyl cation in the solution phase even though density functional theory calculations at the B3LYP/6-311+G* level indicate that the O-silylation of diphenylketene is preferred over C-silylation by 5.4 kcal/mol in the gas phase. On the other hand, in the case of the parent ketene, similar density functional theory calculations show that C-silylation is preferred over O-silylation by 8.2 kcal/mol.

Comparative ab initio study of the structures and stabilities of the ethane dication C2H6(2+) and its silicon analogues Si2H6(2+) and CSiH6(2+).

Ab initio MP2/6-311G and QCISD(T)/6-311G levels as well as Gaussian-2 theory were used to perform a comparative study of the structures and stabilities of the ethane dication C(2)H(6)(2+) and its silicon analogues Si(2)H(6)(2+) and CSiH(6)(2+). Similar to previous HF/6-31G results, our present calculations also indicate that the two-electron three-center (2e-3c) bonded carbonium-carbenium structure 1 is more stable than the doubly hydrogen bridged diborane-type structure 2 by about 12 kcal/mol. For the silicon analogue Si(2)H(6)(2+) the calculations, however, indicate that the 2e-3c bonded siliconium-silicenium structure 8 is about 9 kcal/mol less stable than doubly hydrogen bridged structure 9. Similar results were also computed for carbon-silicon mixed CSiH(6)(2+) dication structures. These studies are in agreement with the more electropositive character of silicon compared to carbon. Possible dissociation paths of the minimum structures were also calculated.

N-halosuccinimide/BF3-H2O, efficient electrophilic halogenating systems for aromatics.

N-Halosuccinimides (NXS, 1) are efficiently activated in trifluoromethanesulfonic acid and BF(3)-H(2)O, allowing the halogenations of deactivated aromatics. Because BF(3)-H(2)O is more economic, easy to prepare, nonoxidizing, and offers sufficiently high acidity (-H(0) approximately 12, only slightly lower than that of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid), an efficient new electrophilic reagent combination of NXS/BF(3)-H(2)O has been developed. DFT calculations at the B3LYP/6-311++G//B3LYP/6-31G level suggest that protonated N-halosuccinimides undergo further protosolvation at higher acidities to reactive superelectrophilic species capable either in the transfer of X(+) from the protonated forms of NXS to the aromatic substrate or in forming a highly reactive and solvated X(+) which would readily react with the aromatic substrates. Structural aspects of the BF(3)-H(2)O complex have also been investigated.

Density functional theory study of adamantanediyl dications C10H142+ and protio-adamantyl dications C10H162+.

Structures of the isomeric adamantanediyl dications C(10)H(14)(2+) and protio-1- and protio-2-adamantyl dications C(10)H(16)(2+) were investigated by using the density functional theory (DFT) method at the B3LYP/6-31G** level. Four structures, 1 b-e, were found to be minima on the potential energy surface of C(10)H(14)(2+). The 1,3-adamantanediyl dication 1b with two bridgehead tertiary carbocationic centers was found to be the most stable structure. On the potential energy surface of C(10)H(16)(2+) (protonated adamantly cation), five structures, 2 b-f, were found to be minima. Each of the structure contains a two-electron, three-center bond. The C-C protonated 1-adamantyl dication, 2f, was characterized as the most stable structure. (13)C NMR chemical shifts of the structures were also calculated by using gauge-including atomic orbital-density functional theory and gauge-including atomic orbital-self-consistent field methods.

Carbocationic rearrangement of pivaloyl cation and protonated pivalaldehyde in superacid medium: a novel solution equivalent of the McLafferty rearrangement.

Both pivaloyl cation in the presence of hydride donors and protonated pivalaldehyde in superacid media (both aprotic and protic) rearrange to protonated methyl isopropyl ketone involving gitionic dicationic intermediates. In our earlier studies we have found that the rearrangement of pivaladehyde to methyl isopropyl ketone occurs quantitatively in the presence of various superacidic media such as anhydrous HF, triflic acid, boron trifluoride-2,2,2-trifluoroethanol complex (BF(3).2CF(3)CH(2)OH) etc. Our present study with environmentally more benign and stable amine:HF complexes, namely pyridinium poly(hydrogen fluoride) (PPHF) (5), poly(4-vinylpyridinium) poly(hydrogen fluoride) (6), and poly(ethyleniminium) poly(hydrogen fluoride) (PEIHF) (7) shows that these modified HF equivalents can carry sufficient amount of immobilized HF and provide ample acidity for complete isomerization of pivalaldehyde to methyl isopropyl ketone. Calculations on protioformyl, acetyl and pivaloyl dications at the B3LYP/6-311 ++ G(d,p) and CCSD(T)/6-311 ++ G(d,p)//B3LYP/6-311 ++ G(d,p) levels have been performed to compare the nature of protosolvation of formyl, acetyl, pivaloyl cations and protonated pivaladehyde in superacid media. These studies further suggest protosolvation of protonated pivalaldehyde leading to gitionic dications at high acidities resulting in the carbocatioinic rearrangement. The reported carbocationic rearrangement under superacidic activation represents a novel solution chemistry equivalent of the well known gas-phase McLafferty rearrangement.

Complexes of guanidinium ion (NH2)3C+ with super Lewis acidic XH4+(X = B and Al): comparison with XH3 complexes and protonated and methylated guanidinium dications.

Structures of the complexes (1 and 8) of the guanidinium ion (H(2)N)(3)C(+) with super Lewis acidic BH(4)(+) and AlH(4)(+) were calculated using the DFT method at the B3LYP/6-311+G** level. (13)C NMR chemical shifts were also calculated by the GIAO-MP2 method. Each of the dicationic complexes contains a hypercoordinate boron or aluminum atom with a two-electron three-center (2e-3c) bond. Guanidinium ion was found to form a strong complex with BH(4)(+) but a relatively weak one with AlH(4)(+). On the other hand, complexations of guanidinium ion with neutral BH(3) and AlH(3) lead only to very weak complexes (5 and 9). The structures of mono- and dicationic complexes were compared with the structures of protonated and methylated guanidinium dications.

13C NMR/DFT/GIAO studies of phenylene bis(1,3-dioxolanium) dications and 2,4,6-triphenylene tris(1,3-dioxolanium) trication.

The o-, m-, and p-phenylene bis(1,3-dioxolanium) dications (4-6) and 2,4,6-triphenylene tris(1,3-dioxolanium) trication (7) have been prepared by the ionization of the corresponding 2-methoxyethyl benzoates in FSO(3)H or CF(3)SO(3)H at 40 and 60 degrees C, respectively. The charge delocalization in these carbocations was probed by (13)C NMR chemical shifts and substantiated by GIAO/DFT calculations. Relatively less charge is delocalized into the aromatic ring of the carbotrication 7. The rotational barrier around the C(+)-Ar bond for carbodications 4 and 5 was also estimated to be 8-10 kcal/mol.

Unified mechanistic concept of electrophilic aromatic nitration: convergence of computational results and experimental data.

The mechanism of electrophilic aromatic nitration was revisited. Based on the available experimental data and new high-level quantum chemical calculations, a modification of the previous reaction mechanism is proposed involving three separate intermediates on the potential energy diagram of the reaction. The first, originally considered an unoriented pi-complex or electron donor acceptor complex (EDA), involves high electrostatic and charge-transfer interactions between the nitronium ion and the pi-aromatics. It explains the observed low substrate selectivity in nitration with nitronium salts while maintaining high positional selectivity, as well as observed oxygen transfer reactions in the gas phase. The subsequent second intermediate originally considered an oriented "pi-complex" is now best represented by an intimate radical cation-molecule pair, C(6)H(6)(+)(*)()/NO(2), that is, a SET complex, indicative of single-electron transfer from the aromatic pi-system to NO(2)(+). Subsequently, it collapses to afford the final sigma-complex intermediate, that is, an arenium ion. The proposed three discrete intermediates in electrophilic aromatic nitration unify previous mechanistic proposals and also contribute to a better understanding of this fundamentally important reaction. The previously obtained ICR data of oxygen transfer from NO(2)(+) to the aromatic ring are also accommodated by the proposed mechanism. The most stable intermediate of this reaction on its potential energy surface is a complex between phenol and NO(+). The phenol.NO(+) complex decomposes affording C(6)H(6)O(+)(*)/PhOH(+) and NO, in agreement with the ICR results.

Superacidic activation of 1- and 3-isoquinolinols and their electrophilic reactions.

Isomeric 1- and 3-isoquinolinols (11 and 12) when activated in CF(3)SO(3)H-SbF(5) acid system undergo selective ionic hydrogenation with cyclohexane to give 5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-1(2H)- and 5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-3(2H)-isoquinolinones (22 and 27). Under the influence of aluminum chloride similar products were also obtained along with 3,4-dihydro-1(2H)- and 1,4-dihydro-3(2H)-isoquinolinones (23 and 28), respectively. Compounds 11 and 12 also condense with benzene in the presence of aluminum halides, under mild conditions, to give 3,4-dihydro-3-phenyl-1(2H)- and 1,4-dihydro-1-phenyl-3(2H)-isoquinolinones (24 and 29), respectively. Prolonged reaction time or catalysis under strongly acidic HBr-AlBr(3) provides an alternative reaction pathway to yield 5,6-dihydro-6,8-diphenyl-1(2H)- and 5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-6,8-diphenyl-3(2H)-isoquinolinones (25 and 30), respectively. Products 24 and 29 were also found to revert back to 11 and 12 in the presence of aluminum halides in o-dichlorobenzene. The mechanism of these intriguing reactions, which involves superelectrophilic dicationic intermediates, is discussed.

Superelectrophilic protio methyl- and protio dimethylmethyleniminium dications.

Electronic structures and energies of superelectrophilic dications derived by protonation of methyl- and dimethylmethyleniminium (R'R' 'C=N+R'R' '; R', R' ' = CH3 or H) ions were calculated at the ab initio MP2/6-311+G level. The calculations identified the N-protonated isopropyleniminium dication 14 as a minimum structure. On the basis of computed energies, deprotonation energies of the global minimum structures were also calculated. The 13C NMR chemical shifts of the intriguing dication 14 were calculated using the GIAO-MP2 method. The 13C NMR chemical shifts of the isoelectronic analogue tert-butyl cation were also calculated at the same level in order to explore the effect of an additional charge in dications 14.
