Structures and stabilities of higher coordinate onium-boronium dications (X(+)BH(3)+ and X(+)BH(5)+; X = NH(3), PH(3), H(2)O, and H(2)S).

Structures of higher coordinate onium-boronium dications (X(+)BH(3)+ 1-4a and X(+)BH(5)+ 1-4d; X = NH(3), PH(3), H(2)O, and H(2)S) were calculated by using the ab initio method at the MP2/6-311+G** level. All of the dications 1-4a contain a four-coordinate boron atom with a three-center two-electron bond involving boron and two hydrogens. On the other hand, all the dications 1-4d contain a six-coordinate boron atom with two three-center two-electron bonds. The thermodynamics of the complexations of 1-4a and H(2) to form 1-4d were computed. Deprotonations of 1-4d were found to be substantially endothermic.

Efficient chemoselective carboxylation of aromatics to arylcarboxylic acids with a superelectrophilically activated carbon dioxide-Al(2)Cl(6)/Al system.

Aromatic carboxylic acids are obtained in good to excellent yield essentially free of diaryl ketones by carboxylation of aromatics with a carbon dioxide-Al(2)Cl(6)/Al system at moderate temperatures (20-80 degrees C). To optimize reaction conditions and study the reaction mechanism, experimental variables including temperature, amount of Al(2)Cl(6)/Al, various Lewis acids, role of metal additive, carbon dioxide pressure, etc. were studied. The carboxylation reaction was found to be stoichiometric rather than catalytic, with aluminum chloride forming a dichloroaluminate of carboxylic acids. Although the carboxylation takes place using AlCl(3) itself, the presence of metal additives, especially Al, increased the yield and selectivity of carboxylic acids. Because it was not possible to distinguish between two possible mechanistic pathways of the reaction on the basis of the experimental results, theoretical calculations using density functional theory (DFT) were also carried out. One possible pathway involves an initial complex between benzene and Al(2)Cl(6), with subsequent formation of organoaluminum intermediates (PhAlCl(2) and PhAl(2)Cl(5)). The other proceeds through the formation of various complexes of CO(2) with aluminum chloride (AlCl(3))(n), n = 1-4. The calculations have shown that the organometallic pathway, leading eventually through the formation of phenylaluminum dichloride, is endothermic by 33 kcal/mol. In contrast, the preferred CO(2)-AlCl(3) complex forms in an exothermic reaction (-6.0 kcal/mol) as does CO(2)AlCl(2)(+). On the basis of both experimental and calculational findings, the most feasible reaction mechanism proposed involves superelectrophilic aluminum chloride activated carbon dioxide reacting with the aromatics in a typical electrophilic substitution.

Ab initio/GIAO-MP2-calculated structures and (11)B-(13)C NMR chemical shift relationship in hypercoordinate onium-carbonium dications and isoelectronic onium-boronium cations.

The boronium-carbonium ion continuum was extended to include hypercoordinated onium-carbonium dications and the isoelectronic onium-boronium cation analogs. Structures and (13)C and (11)B NMR chemical shifts of the onium-carbonium dications and the corresponding isoelectronic and isostructural onium-boronium cations were calculated with the ab initio/GIAO-MP2 method. The data show a good linear correlation between (11)B and (13)C NMR chemical shifts, indicating that the same factors that determine the chemical shifts of the boron nuclei also govern the chemical shifts of carbon nuclei of these hypercoordinated onium ions and dications.

Stable dialkyl ether/poly(hydrogen fluoride) complexes: dimethyl ether/poly(hydrogen fluoride), a new, convenient, and effective fluorinating agent.

The preparation, (1)H, (13)C, and (19)F NMR structural characterization as well as with DFT-based theoretical calculations of stable dialkyl ether/poly(hydrogen fluoride) complexes are reported. Dimethyl ether/poly(hydrogen fluoride) (DMEPHF), are stable complexes of particular interest and use. The DFT calculations, that are in agreement with NMR data, suggest a cyclic poly(hydrogen fluoride) bridged structure for DMEPHF. The complex, DME-5 HF was found to be a convenient and effective new fluorinating agent with the ease of workup and applied to several fluorination reactions, such as the hydrofluorination and bromofluorination of alkenes, and fluorination of alcohols giving good to excellent yield with high selectivity. Homologous dialkyl ether/poly(hydrogen fluoride) (R(2)O/[HF](n,), R = Et, nPr) systems are also stable and suitable for fluorination reactions.

Reactions of 5-, 6-, 7-, 8-hydroxyquinolines and 5-hydroxyisoquinoline with benzene and cyclohexane in superacids.

Isomeric 5-, 6-, 7-hydroxyquinolines (11-13) and 5-hydroxyisoquinoline (14) gave N,C-diprotonated dications in CF(3)SO(3)H-SbF(5) superacid medium. Compounds 11, 13, 14, and 8-hydroxyquinoline (5) underwent selective ionic hydrogenation with cyclohexane in the presence of aluminum chloride. Compounds 11 and 14 condense with benzene in the presence of aluminum halides. The detailed mechanism of reactions, which involves superelectrophilic dicationic intermediates, is discussed.

DFT study of substituted and benzannelated aryl cations: substituent dependency of singlet/triplet ratio.

By using density functional theory (DFT) method at the B3LYP/6-311+G level, it has been shown that the preference for the singlet-state phenyl cation can be dramatically increased relative to the triplet state by introducing onium cationic substituents in the para position. At this level of theory, the singlet ground state for the parent phenyl cation was found to be lower than the triplet by 19.6 kcal/mol. Introduction of electron-donating substituent groups, namely -NMe(2), -NH(2), and -SMe in the para position, strongly favors the triplet state. The -OMe and -SH groups cause a similar but smaller effect, whereas -OH substitution results in an energetically identical system. Protonation of these substituent groups form onium-phenyl dications for which a complete reversal of the relative stabilities in favor of the singlet ground state are indicated with -SH(2)(+), -SMeH(+), and -NH(3)(+) showing the largest singlet/triplet energy difference. The -N(2)(+) group in the para position has a similar effect. Benzannelation also increases the relative stability of triplet aryl cation. Whereas the 1-naphththyl and 2-naphthyl cations are energetically identical, in the 9-anthracenyl cation the triplet minimum lies 13.4 kcal/mol below the singlet minimum. Introduction of activating groups, i.e., OH and NMe(2) at the 4-position of the 1-naphthyl cation, greatly increases the relative stability of the triplet state. Upon heteroatom protonation, the singlet/triplet energy gap is substantially narrowed but the triplet state still remains lower in energy. Structural features in the resulting dications are discussed and compared with the corresponding monocations. The NBO charges at the cationic centers were also compared. We have also calculated the dediazoniation and decarbonylation energetics for mono- and bis-o-trimethylsilyl-substituted benzenediazonium and benzoyl cation to aryl cations in order to probe the effect of beta-silyl stabilization of the positive charge.

Preparation and NMR study of silylated carboxonium ions.

A series of silylated carboxonium ions, 2a-6a, were prepared as long-lived species by treating triethylsilane and triphenylmethyl tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate (Ph3C(+)B(C6F5)4-) with ketones, enones, carbonates, amides, and urea in CD2Cl2 solution. They were characterized by 13C and 29Si NMR spectroscopy at -78 degrees C. The NMR study indicates that the silylated carbonyl compounds are resonance hybrids of oxocarbenium and carboxonium ions, while the latter are the major contributors to the overall structures. The structure and 13C and 29Si NMR chemical shifts of the model trimethylsilylated carboxonium ions were also calculated by density functional theory/IGLO methods. The calculated results agree well with the experimental data.

Hexa-, Hepta-, and Octacoordinate Boronium Ions:(1) BH(6)(+), BH(7)(2+), and BH(8)(3+).

The parent hexa-, hepta-, and octacoordinate boronium ions, BH(6)(+) (1), BH(7)(2+) (4), and BH(8)(3+) (6), respectively, were found as stable minima by ab initio MP2/6-31G and QCISD(T)/6-311G level of calculations. The C(2)(v)() symmetrical structure 1 with two 3c-2e bonds and C(3)(v)() symmetrical structure 4 with three 3c-2e bonds are isostructural with their isoelectronic carbon analogues CH(6)(2+) and CH(7)(3+), respectively. Eight hydrogen atoms of T(d)() symmetrical structure 6 are bonded to the boron atom by four 3c-2e bonds. The protonation of BH(5) to form BH(6)(+) was found to be strongly exothermic. The reaction of BH(4)(+) (3) and H(2) might be a suitable way to generate BH(6)(+) (1) in the gas phase.
