An insulin-related growth-promoting substance was detected in the serum of a patient with Hodgkin's disease who suffered from severe hypoglycaemia, as well as in the supernatant of homogenized spleen tissue of the same patient. Low concentrations of this substance enhanced DNA synthesis of short-term-cultured spleen tumour cells obtained from the same patient, while the addition of anti-insulin antiserum interfered with that effect. Moreover, the preincubation of this insulin-related substance with the anti-insulin antiserum abrogated its stimulatory effect on tumour cell proliferation. Both insulin and the insulin-related substance bound to patients splenocytes to a similar extent. The data suggest that the insulin-related substance, found in this particular case of Hodgkin's disease, plays a role in tumour progression by an autocrine mechanism.

During high-dose methotrexate therapy we recognized a significant increase in AVP secretion as it has previously been reported for other cytostatics. We observed an excessive augmentation of AVP excretion in 24 h urine in 9 patients receiving high-dose methotrexate combined with a considerable water retention. The pathomechanism is so far unknown. From experimental data it may be assumed that methotrexate alters directly the neurosecretory areas of the cerebrum as well as effects the distribution of body fluid volumes. The considerable risk of a water intoxication seems to be of highly clinical importance.

In 41 patients suffering from acute hepatic porphyrias the arginin-vasopressin (AVP) levels in their urine were measured by RIA. In 6 patients, AVP secretion was normal; in 8 cases AVP levels were significantly elevated, while 27 cases showed decreased levels of AVP (p less than 0.001). A linear correlation between AVP secretion and urine volume was not found. In animal experiments, 20 rats were treated with delta-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), (1.5 mmol/kg/24 h and 1.5 mmol/kg/48 h) for 4 weeks. Afterwards vasopressin production in the hypothalamo-hypophyseal system was analysed by the immunoperoxidase technique and a microdensitometric method. In ALA-treated animals, AVP positive neurones showed coarse-grained granules of different intensity and a distinct increase of peroxidase positive granules in the zona interna of the eminentia mediana. Furthermore, in comparison with the control group in ALA-treated animals the mean diameter of nuclei in AVP positive neurons was greater. While animals treated daily showed an increase of transmission in the pituitary, microdensitometric findings in animals treated at 48 hourly intervals showed an equal transmission in AVP producing nuclei compared to the control group. Our results seem to point to a toxic effect of porphyrin precursors on the CNS, which may also induce via hypothalamus lesion either diabetes insipidus or a SIADH-syndrome.
The medical records of 66 women treated with metenolone for metastasized breast carcinomas were analysed. In 26 patients a remission developed with a mean duration of 8.2 (3-29) months. Patients whose treatment started in the first year after the menopause as well as patients with a beneficial effect of a therapeutic ovariectomy in the past were more often improved by metenolone than average. Metenolone had a better effect against osseous metastases than against visceral metastases. In most cases the treatment was well tolerated. In four patients, however, the treatment had to be interrupted because of cholestasis, pulmonary embolism and hypercalcaemia.
More than 2,000 data on volumetric measurements of 42 structures in a variety of up to 76 species (28 insectivores, 21 prosimians, 27 simians) are given. All volumes measured in serial sections were converted to fresh volumes of a brain having a standard size within a given species. The date are available to all scientists for comparison and analysis. To allow critical evaluation, details on fixation and preparation, on determination of fresh brain weights and volumes of brain parts and on intraspecific variability are given.
Combined treatment of hyperlipidaemia with a 1000-calorie-diet and d-triiodothyronine resulted in a lowering of serum cholesterol, triglycerids and lipoproteins. Concerning cholesterol and beta-lipoproteins there was an addition of reducing effects of simultaneous dietary and drug treatment. Triglycerids are influenced by the combined treatment or by dietary treatment alone to the same extent. The levels of free fatty acids rise during combined treatment while there is no change by diet alone. These observations indicate a most successful lowering of cholesterol and beta-lipoproteins by the combined therapy, but there is an increase of free fatty acids as a metabolic side effect of d-triiodothyronine.

Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) was determined in 72 patients with metastatic breast cancer under various kinds of treatment. In 53 cases, CEA levels were elevated. They correlated with free interval, metastatic spreading, alkaline phosphatase (AP) and gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase (gamma-GT). Serial CEA determinations in 50 of the 72 patients revealed increased CEA levels in connexion with progressive tumour growth and decreased CEA levels in connexion with response to treatment. CEA may therefore be useful in helping to assess the extension of the tumour and the effect of treatment in patients with matastatic breast cancer.
