Four peptides possessing both natriuretic and smooth muscle relaxant activities were purified from rat heart atrium and their amino acid sequences were determined. All contained a common sequence which contains a macro-ring structure formed by 17 amino acid residues and a disulphide bridge. The major atrial peptide in the atrium was identified as that containing 31 amino acid residues. The cDNA of the atrial peptide precursor was cloned and its nucleotide sequence determined. The amino acid sequence of the precursor deduced from the nucleotide sequence contained 152 residues and a potential signal peptide sequence characteristic of secretory polypeptides.
The atrial natriuretic activity of rat heart has been found to exist in multiple forms. One of these factors has been purified to apparent homogeneity by a combination of gel filtration and high pressure liquid chromatography in two different systems and its amino acid composition determined. The purified active peptide is shown to have a molecular weight of approximately 3800. In addition, the vasorelaxant activity of rat atrium has been purified and found to co-chromatograph with the natriuretic activity in all chromatographic systems employed. Thus, the vasorelaxant activity resides in the natriuretic factor. The existence of this new multifunctional peptide implies a higher level of complexity for cardiovascular control of blood volume and pressure.

Twenty-two strains of influenza A virus isolated from caged birds which had been imported into Japan from India and Thailand and had died druing transportation to Tokyo. Serological tests divided these strains into two groups. Viruses in the first group contained Hav7 hemagglutinin and were related antigenically to A/duck/Ukraine/1/63 [Hav7 Neq2]; viruses in the second group contained Hav4 hemagglutining and were related to A/duck/Czech/56 [Hav 4 Nav 1]. All strains contained Neq2 neuraminidase that was closely related to that fo A/equine/Miami/1/63[Heq2 Neq2] and A/duck/Ukraine/1/63[Hav7 Neq2]. It was concluded that the strains in the first group were Hav7 Naq2 and those in the second group were Hav4 Neq2; both group of viruses showed antigenic drift from the prototype strains.
In 1974 an epizootic occurred among budgerigar flocks in Kunitachi, Tokyo, and a causative agent which possessed haemagglutinating, neuraminidase, and haemolytic activities was isolated from the lung of a dead budgerigar. This agent was 100 to 300 nm in diamter and pleomorphic. The width of the ribonucleo-protein was estimated to be about 20 nm. These results indicated that the virus, designated Kunitachi virus, was a member of the paramyxovirus group. The virus contained in the amniotic fluid from infected embryonated hen's eggs, however, at times displayed no haemagglutinating activity with different erythrocytes and complete haemagglutination could only be detected in purified preparations. The Kunitachi viruses including three strains recently isolated from the same host were found to be serologically distinct from the known paramyxovirus strains and appeared to constitute a new subtype of avian paramyxovirus.
A procedure is described for the large-scale production of mimosamycin, a satellite antibiotic found in the culture filtrate of Streptomyces lavendulae No. 314. The 1H and 13C NMR, and mass spectroscopic data, are explained in terms of the structure of mimosamycin.

The present experiment shows the efficacity of the sesame-oil adjuvant influenza vaccine. The plain inactivated vaccine merely shows a tendency towards effectiveness and only in a field study was a statistically significant effectiveness observed. We had hitherto made such a field experiment in which the plain inactivated influenza vaccine showed much more effective values. It is not clear that in the present experiment such a result was obtained. The efficacy of intranasal application of inactivated influenza vaccine seemed to be fairly good and appeared quite soon after spraying, although its effect lasted no more than one month.
It is generally accepted that secretory antibodies play a very important role in the prevention of respiratory infections, but it is also considered that the circulating antibody level is a very significant indication of the establishment of infections. In parainfluenza 3 and RS virus infections, reinfections are very common but seem to depend more or less upon circulating antibody levels. There is a correlation between circulating antibody level and infection rate in parainfluenza 3 infection in some groups of school children in our observations of about one year. In the case of RS virus infection, observations were made in some nursery institutions and an experience in school children, in which also a circulating antibody level of some degree presents indications of infection rates.
Parainfluenza 1 virus (typus muris), commonly known as Sendai virus, is still contaminating mouse colonies in Japan. This presents a serious problem to keep mouse colonies pathogen-free. It seems that the infection is spread by dust and the virus remains active a considerable time in the mouse breeding rooms after all mice are removed. In order to eradicate the infection of this virus, vaccination was attempted to inoculate newly born young mice successively for about six months and during and after these periods the movements of the infection were under observation. The vaccine used for this experiment was inactivated virus vaccine with mineral oil-Arlacel adjuvant. The induction of antibody level by the inoculation of this vaccine was evidenced to be very efficient and the duration of the immunity was also very satisfactory. However, after the cessation of the vaccination, the infection of the virus reappeared gradually after some period of temporary ease.
