[Enucleation: causes of extrusion of orbital implants (author's transl)].

The frequency and the causes of extrusion of orbital implants have been investigated. Of the 294 patients in which enucleation was done, in 17 cases (5.8%) extrusion of the first implant developed; in 9 cases with second or third implantations another 5 implants have been extruded. The extrusion of implants is caused mainly by the operative technique and only rarely by intolerance reactions. For a reliable healing exact sutures of the muscles and also exact closure of the implant with plenty of covering tissue is important.

[Comparative examinations in goniotrepanation and trabeculectomy (author's transl)].

In 20 patients with glaucoma simplex (15 cases) or angle closure glaucoma (5 cases) a trabeculectomy had been done on one eye and a goniotrepanation on the other eye within a period of a few days. As far as the operation-technic concerns neither ofthe two methods revealed a remarkable advantage nor a disadvantage. All patients have been controlled up to one year after the operations. There were only a few postoperative complications in both groups. There was no significant difference in the regulation of the intraocular pressure.

[Experimentally induced immonological reaction of the eye after keratoplasty. I. Lightmicroscopy (author's transl)].

After sensitization of a rabbit with soluble human cornea proteins a hetero-keratoplasty (man-rabbit) is performed with exactly determined antibody titer. Light-microscopic investigations showed that the epithelium of the transplant is involved in this severe humoral immune-reaction mainly. In the area between receptor's and donor's cornea impressive changes could be observed.

[Experimentally induced immunological reaction of the eye after keratoplasty. II. Ultrastructural changes of the receptor's cornea (author's transl)].

Ultrastructural changes of the receptor's cornea of a rabbit by experimentally induced immune-reaction were communicated. The finding of plasma-cells proves the generation of humoral antibodies. Granulocytic elements are shown in the transplant or react with diffusing antigen-antibody-complexes already in the stroma of the receptor's cornea.

[Experiences of ear skin-cartilage transplants in tumors of the lid margin (author's transl)].

In cases of lid margin tumors operative procedures are preferred. If the defect after tumor excision is not more than 1/3 of the lid margin, plastic reconstruction is not done; in larger defects a free transplant is preferred to any kind of rotating plastic operation. An exception to this is the case in which the tumor is located on the whole lid margin or its surrounding area. The skin cartilage material taken from the ear or plastic reconstruction has proved satisfactory and in most of the operated 63 eyes satisfactory cosmetic and functional results have been obtained.

[Ultrastructure of macular corneal dystrophy (Groenouw II): investigations of paracentral deep corneal layers (author's transl)].

Electron microscopic studies proved, that in cases of macular corneal dystrophy (Groenouw II) abnormal deposits of acid mucopolysaccharide are demonstrable in the different layers of the cornea in a polymorphic form. Because of the investigations now performed it can be established, that the opacities of the paracentral, deep corneal layers result from both dispersed vesicular and plaque-like deposits of storage material in the border area of the stroma and Descemet's membrane.

[Silicon sponge: ultrastructural examinations in chronic infection (author's transl)].

Ultrastructural examinations of a silastic sponge implant (which was removed with the clinical diagnosis rejection against the silicon material) revealed massive infiltration of so called apothogenic bacteria and macrophages. The results of this examination support the idea that in most of the cases with symptoms of inflammation, there is not a rejection against the sponge material itself but acute or chronic bacterial infection. In the bradytrophic area of the sponge socalled apathogenic bacteria may grow and lead to considerable reactions, because antibodies are decreased.

[Laser-photocoagulation of macular holes (author's transl)].

In severe cases of degenerative macular cysts or holes laser lesions were placed on the temporal or nasal lip of the hole, to preserve the central vision of the right side. In early cases with good visual acuity only 2 narrow beam lesions, were placed to prevent progression of the disease. Control examinations revealed no decrease of visual acuity in most of the cases. In some cases even a little improvement of visual acuity was observed.

[Ultrastructure of the granulomatous reaction against Descemet's membrane (author's transl)].

Ultrastructural findings in regard to the so-called granulomatous reaction against Descemet's membrane indicate that the membrane is phagocytized in the form of small clumps. Basically epithelial cells and, to a lesser extent giant cells, participate in the phagocytosis. In addition to the connective tissue, the epithelium is fairly actively involved in the regeneration of the cornea.

[Drainage of the vitreous body space in cases of intra-ocular infection (author's transl)].

In the last 2 years we saw eight cases with massive i.o.infection (panopht-almitis) following perforating injuries. We took measures as follows: After trepanation of the sclera we washed out the space of the vitreous body with diluted solution of Gentamycin and simultaneously we used massive systemic therapy of Gentamycin and of Penicillin. In this way we stopped the infection in four eyes and we were successful in maintaining in various degree the function of these eyes.

[The ultrastructive of spotty corneal dystrophy (Groenouw II) (author's transl)].

Examination of the ultrastructure of cases of spotty corneal dystrophy (Groenouw II) showed polymorphous results in various layers of the cornea. Inclusions of acidic mucopolysaccharides occur in membrane surrounded storage granules and also in the free state. The results from sections of the central and peripheral regions are extraordinarily variable. The present investigations showed for the first time, that numerous vesicular inclusions can occur also in the boundary region between the stroma and Descemet's membrane.
