Review. In utero sonographic diagnosis of fetal cerebral anomalies.

Obstetric sonography can be used to diagnose anomalies in the fetal brain. Cystic masses in the fetal brain may be due to hydrocephalus, hydranencephaly, holoprosencephaly, or arachnoid cysts. The relations of the falx cerebrum, ventricular system, and cerebral convexities are essential in distinguishing among these anomalies. Anencephaly and encephaloceles can also be detected by sonography. A review of the literature and experience with 10 cases is discussed.

Polyamine metabolism in Menkes kinky hair disease.

Clinical investigations of the urinary excretion of putrescine and the polyamines spermidine and spermine in a patient with Menkes kinky hair disease are reported. This disorder, characterized by intra- and extracellular copper deficiency, is associated with significant depression of diamine oxidase and monoamine oxidase activity. Urinary excretion of diamine and polyamines, monitored over a 2-month interval in a 4-month old patient with Menkes kinky hair disease, documented a 3- to 10-fold increase in the excretion of free putrescine, spermidine and spermine as well as the conjugated derivatives of putrescine and spermidine. These observations suggest that abnormalities in diamine and polyamine concentration occur in disease states in which the metabolic transformation of these compounds is impaired.

A double-'blind' placebo-controlled study of nitazoxanide in the treatment of cryptosporidial diarrhoea in AIDS patients in Mexico.

Sixty-six patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection and diarrhoea caused by Cryptosporidium parvum were enrolled in a double-'blind' placebo-controlled study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of nitazoxanide in the treatment of cryptosporidiosis related to the acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Patients were randomly assigned to one of 3 treatment groups and received either 500 mg twice daily of nitazoxanide, 1000 mg twice daily of nitazoxanide, or placebo orally for 14 d; the patients on nitazoxanide then crossed over to placebo while the placebo patients crossed over to nitazoxanide therapy at either the high or low dose depending on their randomization. Three post-treatment faecal examinations were conducted on days 15, 22 and 29 following initiation of treatment: patients were considered 'cured' if none revealed any C. parvum oocysts. Both doses of nitazoxanide produced parasitological cure rates superior to the placebo responses (12/19 [63%, P = 0.016] for patients receiving 1 g/d and 10/15 [67%, P = 0.013] for those receiving 2 g/d). Parasitological cure was correlated with the complete resolution of the diarrhoeal syndrome in 19 of the 22 treated patients who were considered parasitologically cured (86%). Both doses of nitazoxanide were well tolerated by the patients.

Identification of seven isolants of infectious bronchitis virus by interference with the B-1 isolant of Newcastle disease virus.

Seven isolants of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) interfered with the development of hemagglutinins (HA) by the B-1 isolant of Newcaslte disease virus (NDV) in eggs previously inoculated with these IBV isolants. The I50 [defined as the minimum amount of IBV needed to produce, upon inoculation in embryonating chicken eggs (ECE), HA interference in 50% of these ECE reioculated 10 hr later with 10(2,41 EID50 (HA) of the B-1 strain of NDV] was less than 1 EID50. The interference was considered specific for IBV because if could be eliminated by addition of homologous anti-IBV serum. Furthermore, three other common poultry viruses (laryngotracheitis, fowlpox, and CELO viruses) did not interfere with NDV. In view of its sensitivity, specificity, and simplicity of performance, the IBV-NDV interference test appears to have considerable potential as a diagnostic test for IBV under field conditions.

Isolation of infectious bronchitis virus from broiler chickens in Chile.

An infectious-bronchitis-like virus was isolated from 6-week-old broiler chickens unvaccinated with infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). The isolate produced lesions in embryonating chicken eggs (ECE) and clinical signs in birds characteristic of IBV. Serum-neutralization and agar-gel diffusion tests demonstrated the serological relationship of this isolate to IBV.

Identification of field isolates of infectious bronchitis virus by interference with the La Sota of strain of Newcastle disease virus.

The interference phenomenon of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) with growth of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) in embryonating chicken eggs (ECE) was used as a diagnostic method. Fifteen field isolates obtained from presumptively infectious-bronchitis-affected chickens were analyzed by the IBV-NDV interference test. Eight isolates were capable of interfering with the growth of the La Sota strain of NDV, as measured by hemagglutination (HA) activity when IBV was inoculated 10 hr before NDV into ECE. The interference was considered specific for IBV, because it could be eliminated by adding homologous anti-IBV serum. The sensibility of this method could be demonstrated, because in some cases low-passage levels of IBV isolates showing HA interference ability were not capable of producing lesions in ECE. Furthermore, serologically negative IBV samples did not interfere with NDV growth. From these results, the IBV-NDV interference test appears to be a potential diagnostic alternative for identifying IBV field isolates.

Serologic evidence of pneumovirus in Chile.

Chicken and turkey serum samples were obtained and tested in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to establish the presence or absence of antibodies to avian pneumovirus in the commercial poultry population of Chile. A total of 600 serum samples representing 15 different poultry farms of the central region of Chile were considered. These samples were obtained from 52 different flocks and included 220 turkey and 380 chicken sera. The results showed three flocks of market turkeys belonging to the same farm and three flocks of laying chickens of three different farms to be positive to antibody against pneumovirus. These results provide serologic evidence for the presence of pneumovirus in Chilean poultry.
