[TV-pattern reversal stimulus (VECPs) in determination of refraction (author's transl)].

Pattern reversal VECPs show a dependence on visual acuity and therefore are suitable for objective determination of refraction, this method, however, was of limited clinical use for two reasons, as, on the one hand, the required impulse parameter was difficult to change using the traditional mechanically functioning pattern stimulator and, on the other hand, diagnosis war very timeconsuming. Using a pattern impulse picture presented on a monitor by an electornic impulse apparatus all impulse parameters can easily be changed and throught he introduction of a microprocessorsystem the evaluation can be observed on-line.

Pigmented Xerodermoid: first report of a family.

Pigmented Xerodermoid is a variant of Xeroderma pigmentosum characterized by late manifestation of sun--sensitivity, dyschromic and poikilodermatic skin changes and multiple malignant skin tumors in light exposed areas. In contrast to Xeroderma pigmentosum excision repair system is normal, but DNA synthesis after UV--irradiation is markedly prolonged, suggesting that the postreplicational repair mechanism is disturbed. A family of 89 members with 4 siblings suffering from pigmented Xerodermoid was examined. The pedigree of this family suggests autosomal recessive inheritance in this disease.

[Comparison of the cyanogen bromide peptides of vitreous body collagen and type II collagen (author's transl)].

Pepsin-soluble collagen was isolated from bovine vitreous humor. This collagen showed only one alpha-chain in disc electrophoresis, migrating in the alpha1-chain position and between the alpha- and beta-components some colored bands were visible. The disc electrophoretic patterns of the cyanogen bromide peptides of pepsin-soluble vitreous body collagen and pepsin-soluble type II collagen revealed no identity.

[Immunity after newcastle disease in man (author's transl)].

5 patients, in whom Newcastle disease was diagnosed on the basis of a positive haemagglutination inhibition test (HIT) following contact with affected chickens in 1970 were re-examined recently. The ophthalmological findings were negative at follow-up in all cases. The HIT was still positive (1 : 8) in one patient only; no antibodies were detected in the other four patients.

[Antibodies in gamma-globulin preparations (author's transl)].

A commerical preparation of gamma-globulin with 16% protein content for i. m. administration, as well as two commercial preparations of 5% protein content for i.v. administration, were tested for their antibodies to different viruses. The highest antibody titres were found in the 16% gamma-globulin. Sufficient levels of antibodies to justify prophylactic use were demonstrated in the case of rubella, measles, polio and EBV, whilst antibodies to mumps, coxsackie A9, B1-5 and herpes simplex type I and II were present to a moderate degree. Only low concentrations of antibodies or none at all were found with respect to influence A and B, para-influenza 1--3, vaccinia, adeno 3 and 7, and echo 4, 6, 9, 18 and HBs-antigen. This study shows that normal gamma-globulin can be used prohylactically against many different viral diseases.

[Arteriomesenteric obstruction of the duodenum (author's transl)].

Survey of the clinical and diagnostic treatment of arteriomesenteric obstruction. Report on 4 cases of chronic obstruction and 2 cases of acute occlusion of the duodenum due to the root of mesenteric vessels. Indication of operation. Recommendation of retrocolic side-to-side duodenojejunostomy.

[The change of hyaluronic acid of the vitreous humour by oxidation-reduction-systems (author's transl)].

Purified hyaluronic acid of ox vitreous humour was isolated treating the acetone precipitate of a vitreous humour homogenate with 1 M NaCl solution and thereafter with cetylpyridiniumchloride. Both disc-electrophoresis and hydroxyproline content proved the absence of collagen in the purified hyaluronic acid. FeSO4, ascorbate, and cysteine changed the hyaluronic acid molecule and lowered the viscosity of the hyaluronic acid solution, EDTA alone did not affect the viscosity but enhanced the effectiveness of iron ions or ascorbate on the viscosity of the solution. Catalase prevented the reduction of the viscosity by the above mentioned substances. Therefore, it is suggested that H2O2 and free radicals are generated during the reaction. The free radicals produced are responsible for the change of the hyaluronic acid molecule.

[The proof of two distinct types of collagen in the fibrils of the vitreous body and zonula fibers (author's transl)].

Vitreous body fibrils and zonula fibers are analyzed by disc-electrophoresis. In both tissues the presence of collagen is established. The disc-electrophoresis patterns of vitreous body fibrils and zonula fibers show that a different type of collagen is present in each tissue. The absence of the alpha 2-chain indicates that the tissues investigated contain no type I collagen but types consisting of three identical alpha-chains.
