The colon and rectum were removed from 445 consecutive autopsies and examined for the presence of polypoid lesions under an illuminating magnifying lens. There were seven clinically undiagnosed carcinomas, 329 adenomas, 174 hyperplastic polyps, 59 mucosal tags, 34 other polypoid lesions, and 54 polyps in which no histologic diagnosis could be made. Adenomas were present in 34% of the men and 32% of the women. The adenoma prevalence rate increased smoothly with age in men, whereas the rate in women showed a biphasic variation with a peak at 50--59 years followed by a second increase after 70 years of age. The distribution of adenomas within the bowel showed a marked change with age, from a moderate left-sided predominance before 60 years of age to a marked right-sided predominance in patients over 80 years of age, particularly in men. Hyperplastic polyps were present in 27% of the men and 18% of the women. In men, their frequency and distribution within the bowel showed similar changes with age as were seen for the adenomas. In women, no such age-dependency was observed for hyperplastic polyps. Multiplicity of polyps increased with age and was more pronounced in men than in women. Adenomas in women tended to be larger, more atypical, and more villous than in men. A comparison with a similar study from Northern Norway showed no difference in the prevalence of adenomas in spite of a 70% higher incidence rate for colorectal cancer in Oslo.
The purpose of this retrospective study based on the findings in routinely processed material from fifty-two consecutive cases of prostatic carcinomas is a mathematical calculation of the probability of including a carcinoma in the histological sections from tissue obtained by transurethral resection of the prostate when different embedding practices are followed. The analysis shows that if a material of a composition similar to ours were examined, the calculated probability to include at least one prostatic chip with malgnant tissue in the histological sections would be about 91% if one paraffin-block is made. The probability increases to about 96% when two blocks are used and comes close to 99% with four blocks.
A series of 82 cysts and sinuses in the lateral head and neck has been reviewed with a view to features which may help to determine origin from the fetal branchial apparatus. Whilst both pre-auricular and lateral cervical sinuses are often hereditary and associated with other developmental anomalies, these features are lacking in the case of infra-auricular first cleft anomalies and lateral cervical cysts. Although salivary tissue occurred in 50 per cent of lateral cervical sinuses, only one of the cysts presented this feature. Lymphoid tissue was present in all lateral cervical cysts, but no sinusoids were found within the cyst wall. Lymph nodes were present in the majority of these specimens, but separated from the cyst wall by a fibrous layer. It is therefore unlikely that the cysts arise from salivary inclusions in cervical lymph nodes. The different clinical features would not support the view that lateral cervical cysts and sinuses have identical embryological origins.
In 280 unselected necropsies on patients over 20 years of age in Northern Norway, diverticular disease was present in 25% of the males and 43% of the females. The frequency of diverticular disease increased in both sexes by age. Both the frequency of diverticular disease and the average number of diverticula per case with diverticular disease were higher in females than in males in all age groups. The sigmoid was the most frequent site of diverticula in both sexes and for all ages, and the average number of diverticula per diverticulum-bearing segment was also highest in the sigmoid for all ages and in both sexes. The average number of diverticula in the sigmoid of affected individuals increased with age and with the number of segments involved. Diverticular disease was not associated with adenomas of the large intestine or with malignant or benign neoplasms elsewhere in the body or with any of the common diseases thought to be related to a Western type of diet, except with cerebrovascular disease.
In unselected autopsies on 171 males and 109 females over 20 years of age in Tromsø, Northern Norway, adenomas of the colon and rectum were present in 40% of the males and 33% of the females. The frequency of adenomas increased with age in both sexes. Hyperplastic polyps were found in 20% of all cases with no variation in frequency with sex or age. Before the age of 65 most adenomas were located in the distal half of the large intestine in both sexes. After 65 years in males and 75 years in females the predilection site was shifted to the proximal half of the large intestine. The average size and grade of atypia of adenomas increased with age, but no significant difference in grade of atypia was found between the proximal and distal halves of the large intestine. The occurrence of adenomas was not associated with any of the common chronic diseases thought to be related to a western-style diet or to malignant or benign neoplasms elsewhere in the body. A significant association was found between the occurrence of adenoma and high body weight. The findings support the role of adenomas as precursors of colorectal carcinoma.

In a 23-year-old woman with lumbar pain, an expansive process in the right kidney was demonstrated by I.V.P., retrograde pyelography and renal angiography. The histological examination subsequent to nephrectomy showed endometriosis in association with localized xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis. Renal endometriosis has been described only eight times previously in the literature. The current case is discussed and compared with previous reports.
A case of benign, solitary schwannoma of the cervical vagus nerve with ipsilateral vocal cord paralysis is presented. The differential diagnostic aspects are discussed, with special reference to neurologic deficit in association with this lesion. The possible occurrence of concomitant unrelated malignancy is emphasised.
