A rare cause of cervical spinal stenosis: posterior arch hypoplasia in a bipartite atlas.

We describe CT and MRI of a previously unreported combination of atlantoaxial anomalies consisting of posterior arch hypoplasia in a bipartite atlas with an os odontoideum, in a 30-year-old woman presenting with neck and left arm pain. MRI showed the os odontoideum, marked stenosis of the spinal canal at the level of the atlas, with cord compression and evidence of myelopathy. CT revealed a bipartite atlas with midline clefts in anterior and posterior arches, thickening in the anterior arch and hypoplasia of the posterior arch with incurving of both hemiarches. Flexion and extension radiographs demonstrated atlantoaxial instability.

Intracranial lipoma with extracranial extension through foramen ovale in a patient with encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis syndrome.

We present CT and MR features of a large intracranial lipoma located in the left sphenocavernosal region in a patient with a history of spinal intradural lipoma excision. The lipomatous lesion surrounded the internal carotid artery and trigeminal nerve and extended extracranially into the infratemporal region through a smoothly dilated foramen ovale.

Morphometric comparison of the human corpus callosum in professional musicians and non-musicians by using in vivo magnetic resonance imaging.

The purpose of this study was to determine the possible morphometrical differences of the corpus callosum between professional musicians and non-musicians. Certain callosal dimensions and areas were measured in 20 professional musicians and compared with 20 age-, sex- and handedness-matched control group by using in vivo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Sagittal T1-weighted midsagittal sections were traced with the digitizer and the metric scale of the system was used for the measurements. Results were statistically analysed by independent t test. There were significant differences between the two groups both for the anterior and posterior areas of the corpus callosum. Furthermore, significant differences between the two groups were found in the thicknesses of certain parts of the corpus callosum. Our results support the hypothesis that brain morphology is prone to plastic changes caused by environmental factors.

Multiple spinal intramedullary cavernous angioma: case report.

Spinal cavernous angiomas frequently accompany to cranial cavernous angiomas. Multiple spinal cord cavernous angiomas are very rare and to authors knowledge, only one case has been described having multiple intramedullary cavernous angiomas without cranial involvement until now. In this report, we present a case with acute paraplegia who had thoracic and cervical intramedullary cavernous angiomas and normal cranial magnetic resonance imaging.

Changes in the TMJ disc-condyle-fossa relationship following functional treatment of skeletal Class II Division 1 malocclusion: a magnetic resonance imaging study.

A detailed clinical examination of the parts of the temporomandibular joint can be carried out by means of magnetic resonance imaging. The aim of this study was to examine, with the use of magnetic resonance imaging, the mandibular condyle-disc-fossa relationship in subjects with Class II Division 1 malocclusions who were treated with the Andresen activator. The sample consisted of 18 subjects with Class II Division 1 malocclusion, 9 treated with the Andresen activator and 9 control subjects. Unilateral magnetic resonance images, lateral cephalograms, and hand-wrist films were taken for each subject at the beginning and end of the treatment or observation period. The anterior, posterior, and superior joint spaces were measured on the magnetic resonance images, and the posterior, medial, and anterior disc angles were measured for the determination of the disc position. The changes that occurred during the treatment and observation periods were examined by means of a paired t test and an analysis of variance. The condyle was found to be located anteriorly. However, the changes in the disc position were found to be statistically insignificant.

A novel pathway in the photooxygenation of cyclic allenes.

[equation--see text] The photooxidation of cyclic allenes gives rise to cyclic 1,2, 3-trione hydrates. The formation of these compounds points to a novel photooxidation mechanism involving both singlet and triplet oxygen. Upon placement of a methyl group on the allene, the mechanism shifts to predominantly an "ene" reaction. The corresponding cycloadditions with 4-methyl-1,3,4-triazoline-3, 5-dione (MTAD) with cyclic allenes involve 2 equiv of MTAD. The dipolar intermediates are trapped with H(2)O to give alpha-urazole-substituted 2-cycloalkenones.

The changes in temporomandibular joint disc position and configuration in early orthognathic treatment: a magnetic resonance imaging evaluation.

This study aimed to examine the effects of chin cup therapy on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc position and configuration with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Twenty-five individuals ranging in age from 5 to 11 years were evaluated. The treatment group consisted of 15 subjects (10 females and five males) with prognathic facial structures, while the control group comprised 10 subjects (six females and four males) with an orthognathic facial structure. The magnitude of the chin cup force applied to the mandible was 600 g. Unilateral MRIs of the TMJ were taken in all subjects at the beginning and end of the study. No statistically significant changes in the TMJ disc position and configuration during the treatment and control periods could be seen. The values of the alpha angle measurements were found to be different in the treatment and control groups at the beginning (166.23 +/- 2.15 and 172 +/- 1.97, respectively), and end of the treatment and control periods (160.00 +/- 2.16 and 172.00 +/- 2.68). These findings show that if the chin cup appliance is used at an early age and with appropriate forces, there will be no adverse effect on the TMJ disc position and configuration.

Multimodality demonstration of primary splenic angiosarcoma.

Angiosarcomas are rare, accounting for only 1-2% of all soft tissue sarcomas. Primary abdominal angiosarcomas usually arise in the liver or spleen. We report the first color Doppler findings of a rare, low-grade splenic angiosarcoma in a 52-year-old woman.

Role of magnetic resonance imaging in children with voiding dysfunction: retrospective analysis of 81 patients.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the role of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in children with voiding dysfunction and a normal neuro-orthopedic assessment. The differential diagnosis of neurogenic and non-neurogenic voiding dysfunction, particularly in children with occult neurogenic pathologic findings without a clinically demonstrable neurologic defect, is a commonly encountered problem. METHODS: Eighty-one children with voiding dysfunction, including a history of diurnal incontinence, frequency, urgency, urge incontinence, incomplete bladder emptying, recurrent urinary tract infection, and persistent vesicoureteral reflux, constituted our study group. A detailed neuro-orthopedic evaluation was performed in all patients. The urologic evaluation consisted of a detailed history (including bowel function disturbances), renal sonography or excretory urography, spinal x-ray, urinalysis and culture, voiding cystourethrography, and multichannel water cystometry. In all cases, lumbosacral spinal axial and sagittal T1- and T2-weighted MRI performed with a 1.5-Tesla surface coil was reviewed by one neuroradiologist. RESULTS: MRI revealed pathologic findings in 17 (38.6%) of 44 patients who had voiding dysfunction and a normal neuro-orthopedic assessment. All these patients underwent early surgical intervention in our pediatric neurosurgery department. In the postoperative period, objective and/or subjective improvement in voiding symptoms within short (6 months) and long (14 months) periods was observed in 8 (47.0%) and 5 (29.4%) patients, respectively. Ten (58.8%) of those 17 patients had a history of voiding dysfunction refractory to conservative management. CONCLUSIONS: Our results revealed that MRI of the lower spinal cord is a valuable tool in the diagnosis of occult spinal cord disorders, especially in patients with voiding dysfunction refractory to conservative management strategies and normal neurologic and orthopedic assessments.

Focal dermal hypoplasia (Goltz's syndrome).

A 17-year-old female with Goltz's syndrome was examined because of visual acuity loss in her right eye. Ocular examination revealed microcornea, iris, choroid and optic disc coloboma in the right eye. There were several erthematous and hyperpigmented areas on the body. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the orbits and brain demonstrated right optic nerve hypoplasia and diffuse cortical and cerebellar atrophy. Skeletal manifestations were short stature, scoliosis, syndactyly, clinodactyly, and osteopathia striata. Dental defects included hypodontia, developmental defects, and malocclusion. There were multiple papillomatous lesions on the lids and perioral skin and the nose was asymmetric. Her mental development was apparently normal. She had left bifid ureter and renal pelvis, scant hair on the pubic and genital region, and poor breast development. Histopathologic examination of the biopsy taken from a characteristic skin lesion revealed attenuated epidermis, hypoplastic dermis, and subcutaneous fat close to epidermis. Immunofluorescence staining was negative for IgG, IgM, IgA, C3, C4, fibrin, and albumin. Ultrastructural examination showed that no viral particles were present. Prometaphase chromosome analysis revealed a normal 46, XX female karyotype. Cortical and cerebellar atrophy can occur in a patient with Goltz's syndrome.
