[Effect of ultra-high frequency electromagnetic waves on a postsynaptic membrane model].

It was shown that high-frequency electromagnetic field increases the conductivity of ionic channels formed by the synaptic membrane fragments, which bind glutamate, in a bilayer lipid membrane. Heating of the whole electrolyte in a cell, under the effect of the electromagnetic field applied, was minor to be responsible for the effects observed.

[Effect of alpha particles on bacteriophage T4].

Exponential survival curves were obtained for a dry film culture of bacteriophage T4 Br+ after exposure to both alpha-particles and gamma-quanta. Relative biological effectiveness of alpha-particles was 4.68 with respect to survival. The mutation spectrum after alpha-irradiation slightly differed from that produced by gamma-radiation.

[Structure and development of zone-forming colonies of Streptomyces levoris].

The structure of Streptomyces levoris colonies was studied in the course of growth on media containing various energy and carbon sources. Hyphae of the primary substrate mycelium underwent periodic differentiation yielding secondary structures which, apparently, were involved in the formation of sporogenous aerial mycelium rings on the surface of the colonies. The data of histological studies, luminescent microscopy and in vivo observations are discussed in terms of how processes of growth and zone formation are separated in space and time.

Use of trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid in the determination of protein amino groups on the external surface of rat erythrocyte membranes.

Description is provided of conditions selected for the study of protein amino groups (AG) on the external surface of rat erythrocyte membranes (EM) by means of 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS). The number of protein AG reacting with TNBS was influenced by the season of the year, the physiologic state of the donor animal, and other factors known to alter EM. It appears that structural perturbations introduced by these factors into EM are responsible for alterations in the accessibility of the protein AG to TNBS.

[Effect of transmeridional flights on the biorhythm of zone formation in Streptomyces levoris].

The transmeridional transportation of the temperature controlled colonies of Streptomyces levoris exerted a marked effect on its biorhythms. This included changes in the growth and zone formation rates and differences in the vector of changes as related to the flight direction. The vector of changes during the East-oriented air-borne flight coincided with that in the orbital flight with a similar direction of transportation. These findings as well as the results of studies of seasonal and diurnal rhythms of the actinomycete zone formation suggest the synchronizing effect of the periodicity of geophysical factors.

[Action of new class of substituted salicylanilides on ion conductivity of lipid membranes].

A new class of high-activity substituted salicylanilides has been studied in bilayer lipid membranes (BLM). Very low concentrations of these substances are shown to increase the BLM d. c. electroconductivity. Approximately Nernts value of transmembrane potential was measured when ten-fold pH gradient was produced. The experiments favour the opinion that these substituted salicylanilides act as protonophores. The obtained data suggest that DMSO facilitates its transport through the lipid bilayer. Furthermore, two different mechanisms are shown to take place in the H+ transport, when DMSO or water has been used as a solvent for these substances. The results suggest that other processes which are investigated now are involved.
