[Radiomodifying effect of methandrostenolone on laryngeal cancer cells].

The property of methandrostenolone, a synthetic male hormone, as a stimulator of proliferative activity of tumour cells was studied in experimental analyses, conducted on the transplanted culture of HEP-2 cells and on xenografts of the human larynx cancer cultured in diffusive chambers. This property of the hormone was used to increase the sensitivity of human laryngeal tumour, to ionizing emission. The morphological study of histological specimens prepared from xenografts and histological specimens of patients with laryngeal tumour, who received preoperative distant gamma-therapy against a background of the methadrostenolone use, gave the results which allow recommending this hormone to be used during radiotherapy of patients with the laryngeal cancer.

[Functional state of the thyroid and its regulatory system in tumor-bearing animals].

A comparative study of labelled thyroxine and iodine accumulation was carried out in the thyroid endocrine complex under endoliquor and intraabdominal introduction of thyrotropic hormone (TTH) and thyrotropin-releasing-factor (TRF) in rats with transplantable and induced tumours as well as in intact animals. A sharp decrease of the system response to TRF in tumour-bearing animals was established. The incorporation of labelled thyroxine introduced into the thyroid gland tissue and posterior region of the hypothalamus is found to be lower under the tumour growth. The character of changes causing the disturbances in the activity of the thyroid gland should be taken into account in an attempt to normalize the gland activity. The normalization should be based on the complex influence directed to all the links of the hypothalamus-pituitary thyroid gland system.

[Prognostic value of hormonal and immunological indices in the combined treatment of esophageal cancer].

A combination therapy consisting of two endolymphic infusions of BCG vaccine and methotrexate followed by remote gamma therapy 10 days after the second infusion was given to 96 patients with stage III esophageal tumors. Complete response was observed in 64.4 and partial--in 33.3% of cases. An evaluation of response carried out on the basis of 40 hormonal and immunological indices showed that immunological factors make the major contribution to antitumor resistance. The report contains a table of parameters which provide information indispensable for the prognosis of treatment depending on the response of internal environment to endolymphic infusion.

[Endolymphatic chemotherapy of cervix neoplasms].

In the gynecological department of Rostov Oncological Institute endolymphatic polychemotherapy with a preliminary determination of tumor sensitivity to chemotherapy was employed in 54 patients with cervical cancer, 3 of them in stage III and IV having contraindications to radiotherapy. A combination of chemical substances and the dosage of single administration were as follows: thio-TEPA--100--150 mg + methotrexate 75--100 mg; thio-TEPA--100--150 mg + 5-fluoruracil--1000 mg; cyclophosphane--2000 mg + methotrexate--75--100 mg; cyclophosphane--1600 mg + methotrexate--75--100 mg + 5-fluoruracil--750 mg. Lymphoinfusion was made in the lower extremity, and after 7--10 days it was repeated in the second one. Visual disappearance of the tumor was noted in 17 patients, lessening of the tumor size by two-thirds--in 16, a 1/2 decrease--in 20. Among 23 patients in stage III after the treatment parametrial infiltrations disappeared entirely in 11 cases and only in pelvic walls--in 12. In 40 cases an extensive extirpation of the uterus with adnexa was performed. In all cases degenerative changes in tumor tissues were observed, whereas in 7 cases no tumor cells were found.

[Changes in lymphocyte and erythrocyte membrane microviscosity in cancer patients].

Lymphocyte and erythrocyte membrane microviscosites of lipid-protein contact zones and lipid bilayer in blood of patients with gastric, urinary bladder and ovary cancers were investigated in comparison with healthy volunteers by means of coefficients of eximerization of fluorescent probe pyrene. The decrease of membrane fluidity (i.e. the increase of microviscosity) was revealed in blood cell membranes of patients with diffuse cancers of studied localizations. In the case of ovary cancer membrane fluidity decreased significantly only in patients with ascite form of the disease. The most pronounced increase of microviscosity was observed in lymphocytes and especially in erythrocytes of practically incurable patients. Interrelationship between microviscosity and other processes that influence on structural properties of membranes under malignancy and their functional role are discussed.

[Structural-functional changes in lymphocyte ans erythrocyte membranes after exposure to alternating magnetic field].

The lymphocyte membrane fluidity, membrane potential, isoenzyme spectrum of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catabolic product level of blood cell receptors in rats, healthy volunteers and patients with ovary and skin tumors were studied under the influence of low frequency electromagnetic field (EMF). The increase of fluidity of rat blood lymphocyte membranes was observed at 20 and 40 min exposure of the lymphocyte suspension to EMF. The increase of ANS fluorescence observed after 20 min exposure to EMF suggested a decrease of cell membrane potential. EMF exerted opposite changes of lymphocyte membrane fluidity of healthy volunteers and the effect depended on the initial level of this parameter. Study of SOD isoenzyme spectrum revealed that Cu,Zn-dependent SOD can account for the superoxide dismutase catalytic activity of supernatant and lymphocytes. The EMF exposure for 20 min caused 2-fold increase of SOD activity. The EMF exposure for 40 min caused the further increase of SOD activity but only in lymphocytes. At the same time the EMF exposure did not influence the actual SOD-activity in erythrocytes. However, there was clear anti-R-reagent-sensitive SOD-activity which was not abolished by DDC. The reasons and possible consequences of these changes of feuidity and SOD-activity under EMF effect are discussed.

[The mechanisms of the decrease in prostatic mass in rats during the administration of estrogenic preparations into the cerebrospinal fluid].

Experiments on albino male rats have shown that the endoliquor administration of estrogens at low doses results in the inhibition of proliferative processes in the prostatic tissues comparable with that observed at the administration of doses two orders larger, and at the subcutaneous administration. A study of the possible mechanism of the observed phenomenon has shown that this effect is associated with the fact that in such a way of estrogen administration conditions are created for deeper inhibition of the production of gonadotropins by the adenohypophysis, and as a result of it a decrease in the androgen level is observed leading to the inhibition of proliferative processes in the prostatic tissues.
