Melatonin, a pineal substance: effect on the rat ovary.

Daily injection of microgram amounts of melatonin in rats decreased the incidence of estrus and reduced ovarian weight. Circulating melatonin was selectively taken up and retained by the ovary and pineal gland; this effect was reduced by exposure of rats to constant light. A single injection of melatonin lowered the incidence of estrus among rats exposed to constant light.

Enzymatic formations of adrenaline and other catechols from monophenols.

An enzyme that forms adrenaline from p- and m-sympathol and dopamine from p- and m-tyramine is localized in the microsomes of rabbit liver and requires the reduced form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate. The enzyme is nonspecific and can form catechols from the following normally occurring and foreign phenols: p- and m-octopamine, p-hydroxyephedrine, phenol, stilbestrol, N-acetyl-p-aminophenol, estradiol and N-acetylserotonin.

Localizing tritiated norepinephrine in sympathetic axons by electron microscopic autoradiography.

Following intravenous infusion of tritiated norepinephrine, rat pineals were prepared for combined autoradiography and electron microscopy. Concentrations of photographic grains were observed only over regions of preterminal autonomic axons containing granulated vesicles, thereby directly demonstrating uptake of norepinephrine into these axons and strongly suggesting that their granulated vesicles contain norepinephrine.
