Combined action of fosfomycin with beta-lactam and aminoglycoside antibiotics.

The combined action of fosfomycin with penicillin G, ampicillin and streptomycin was investigated. A total of 11 S. aureus and 10 E. coli were included in these studies. It has been shown that a combination of fosfomycin with penicillin G and streptomycin resulted in a synergistic effect. When S. aureus strains were tested, the combination of fosfomycin with penicillin G was more frequently effective than the combination of fosfomycin with streptomycin. The combinations of fosfomycin with ampicillin and streptomycin showed a similar synergistic effect on 7 of 10 E. coli strains. The antagonistic effect never resulted when the above-mentioned combination of antibiotics were used. The authors postulate that a combination of fosfomycin with beta-lactam or aminoglycoside antibiotics may be used in clinical practice and such a procedure should prevent an emergence of fosfomycin-resistant strains.

Combined action of phosphomycin with streptomycin and gentamicin.

The combined action of phosphomycin with streptomycin and gentamicin against 41 strains of Gram-positive micrococci (S. aureus and Str. faecalis) and 87 strains of Gram-negative bacilli (including 38 strains of Pseudomonas) was evaluated. The combination of phosphomycin with streptomycin acted synergistically against 12 strains of Gram-positive micrococci, and the combination of phosphomycin with gentmicin against 10 strains. The combination of phosphomycin with streptomycin acted synergistically against 31% of strains (except Pseudomonas), and the combination of phosphomycin with gentamicin against 65% of strains. Only six of 38 Pseudomonas strains were acted synergistically by phosphamycin with streptomycin, and four by phosphomycin with gentamicin. The results indicate that the combination of phosphomycin with aminoglycoside antibiotics shows greater synergistic activity against Gram-negative strains than against Gram-positive micrococci.

The influence of Listeria monocytogenes cells on the primary immunologic response in irradiated mice.

The influence of killed Listeria monocytogenes cells on the primary immunologic response in mice irradiated with 300 or 500 R was studied. The immunologic response of the mice to sheep red blood cells used as antigen was assessed at the cellular level (by counting PFC) and humoral level. Injection of killed Listeria monocytogenes cells before irradiation of the mice diminished the immunosuppressive effect of roentgen radiation. Injection of the cells after irradiation accelerated regeneration of immunologic reactivity in the irradiated mice.

Studies on the combined action of phosphonomycin with streptomycin, penicillin G and ampicillin.

Using the serial dilution method in solid media, sensitivity of isolated strains of S. aureus and E. coli to phosphonomycin, streptomycin, penicillin G and ampicillin, and the effect of combined action of phosphonomycin with these antibiotics were studied. Against S. aureus strains, phosphonomycin in combination with penicillin G showed synergistic action more often than in combination with streptomycin. On the other hand, against E. coli strains the combination of phosphonomycin with streptomycin and ampicillin was similarly synergistic. The findings suggest the possibility of clinical applications of combined therapy with phosphonomycin and antibiotics of the beta-lactam and aminoglycoside groups.
