Relationship between litter size and other reproductive traits in the Dutch Kooiker dog.

A study of the relationship between litter size and other reproductive traits in Dutch Kooiker dogs born between 1956 and 1990 is described. The characteristics investigated were: litter size, homozygosity of the litter, paternal and maternal homozygosity, paternal and maternal litter size, paternal and maternal age, maternal parity, the year of birth, and interactions between these factors. A Poisson model with identity link was used. A negative effect on litter size was found for homozygosity of the litter (-3.175) and for maternal age. Positive effects on litter size were found for maternal litter size (+.09786) and maternal parity (+.5847, parity 2; +.8756, parity 3; +1.044, parity > or = 4). The effects of paternal age, paternal litter size, maternal homozygosity, and expected interactions were not significant. The positive effect of paternal homozygosity (+2.30) may have been caused by the frequent use of a small number of related sires.

The relationship between homozygosity and the occurrence of specific diseases in Bouvier Belge des Flandres dogs in The Netherlands.

Since purebred dog populations represent closed gene pools, a relatively high level of consanguinity between individuals, and hence of inbreeding, is common. This case control study was conducted to establish the possible connection between the actual level of homozygosity due to inbreeding and specific diseases (flea allergy, osteochondrosis, laryngeal paralysis, neoplasm, autoimmune disease, hypoplastic trachea, and food allergy) occurring in the Bouvier Belge des Flandres breed. One hundred and sixty-eight animals referred to the Utrecht University Clinic formed the patient group. Each of the seven diseases was chosen because of the demonstrability of the diagnosis. Each animal was chosen because one of the selected diseases was established in that individual, and because its pedigree was complete. All dogs of the patient group were born between 1 January 1980 and 31 December 1985. A control group (n = 123) was randomly chosen from the total population of registered Bouviers born in the Netherlands in the same period. pedigree data were obtained from the Dutch Kennel Club. The extent of inbreeding was determined for all animals using Wright's inbreeding coefficient. The distribution of inbreeding coefficients in each patient group was compared with the distribution in controls. Inbreeding coefficients in the control group ranged from 0.0 to 0.406. Animals in which osteochondrosis, food allergy, autoimmune disease, neoplasm, or hypoplastic trachea was diagnosed had higher inbreeding coefficients than controls. It was concluded that in the Bouvier Belge des Flandres dog population examined, the level of homozygosity was positively correlated with occurrence of these diseases.

[Genetic eye defects in the dog].

Genetically determined disturbances of the normal function of the eye are distributed in high frequencies in several breeds of dogs. Two groups of these disturbances are discussed; disturbances resulting from the aims of breeding and defects caused by mutant genes. Disturbances such as ectropion, entropion and trichiasis may be regarded as the results of aims of breeding. They have a polygenic background and can be reduced by selection against the undesired traits and by modification of the breed standards. The frequencies of defects caused by mutant genes such as PRA, cataract and PHTVL/PHPV can be effectively reduced by veterinary practitioners. They are expected to be able to explain the consequences of breeding with animals carrying these genes to their clients when patients with these defects are presented.

Linkage between genes for coat colour and for blood plasma esterase in dogs.

A study on linkage in dogs has been made on the basis of comparable studies in other mammal species. In a breeding experiment one dog was mated to 14 bitches. The dog was heterozygous for the plasma esterase locus (Es-1) and the extension locus (E) for coat colour. The 14 bitches, homozygous for both loci, produced a total of 96 offspring. The recombination distance between the loci is calculated to be 34.4 +/- 4.8 cM. The basis for homology between species for the two loci has been discussed.

German shepherd dog pyoderma: a genetic disorder.

In this study the pedigrees of 42 German Shepherd dogs with German Shepherd dog Pyoderma (GSP) were analysed. Parents, littermates and offspring of the affected dogs were traced and their owners were questioned on characteristic skin lesions. Evidence suggesting an autosomal recessive trait was found. Breeders are advised to exclude affected animals and their relatives from further breeding.

A new allele of glucose phosphate isomerase in dogs.

A new variant of red cell glucose phosphate isomerase (GPI), designated GPI-C, was observed in the chow-chow breed of dog. GPI-C could be separated from the previously reported dog GPI variants (A and B), both by starch gel electrophoresis and by isoelectric focusing (pH 3-10). Family data supported the hypothesis that GPI-C is controlled by a third codominant allele (GPI C). GPI C occurred as a rare allele in the Dutch chow-chow population.

The suitability of dogs as guide dogs for the blind: criteria and testing procedures.

Criteria and testing procedures with regard to the suitability of dogs as guide dogs for the blind were developed on the basis of a literature study and own observations. A profile of the guide dog comprising physical characteristics, skillfulness, behaviour, and obedience was drawn up. As a rule, the testing procedures concern health and skills of the dogs. In the skill test some elements of the behavioural and obedience test were included. The final evaluation is based on the results of physical examination and the skill test, unless testing of behaviour and/or obedience appears necessary as well. A method for evaluating the performance of the dogs as objectively as possible is described. Some implications of using and testing guide dogs are discussed.

[Control of harmful mammals].

In the Netherlands, several millions of injurious small mammals are killed yearly. This concerns not only mice and rats but also moles, musk-rats and several other species of rodent. At the request of the Netherlands Society for the Protection of Animals, studies were done on the methods in killing these animals, the effectiveness of these methods and the possibilities of reducing the harm done to the animals. The most important results of these investigations are reported in the present paper.

[Breeding policy and pedigree dog populations].

Data on the effects of selection in breeds of dogs were collected. Particularly, effects on behavioural traits, characteristics of type and movement and state of health. The data were collected by studies of the literature and discussions with dog breeders and their organisations. The data collected was used to design a model of a dog population. In this model, various genetically determined traits were introduced and the breeding policy for these traits was then discussed with experts in breeding of animals of other species.

Inheritance of K88-mediated adhesion of Escherichia coli to jejunal brush borders in pigs: a genetic analysis.

The transmission and genetic organization of the adhesion of the serological variants of the K88 adhesin in the jejunum of the pig were investigated. The results of 28 matings of 5 boars with 15 sows are presented. On the basis of previous studies it has been accepted that the presence of specific receptor sites for K88ab and K88ac depends on a gene locus with 2 alleles S and s. The presence of additional receptor sites for K88ad is now presumed to depend on a separate locus with the alleles D and d. The expression of the alleles of the S and D loci is not always complete and is likely to be influenced by epistatic genes. Inhibition or modification of the expression of the receptor sites for K88 can result in intermediate phenotypes.

Parentage testing of dogs using variants of blood proteins: description of five new plasma protein polymorphisms.

Plasma samples of 1126 dogs belonging to 21 different European breeds were analysed by two-dimensional agarose gel (pH 5.4 or pH 8.6)--horizontal polyacrylamide gel (pH 9.0) electrophoresis, followed by general-protein staining of gels. Genetic polymorphism was detected for five as yet unidentified proteins designated pretransferrin-1 and -2 (Prt1 and Prt2) and postalbumin-1, -2 and -3 (Pa1, Pa2 and Pa3). Three alleles are reported in the Prt1 and Prt2 systems and two alleles in the Prt2, Pa1 and Pa3 systems. While Prt2 variation was observed only in the cocker spaniel breed, each of the other four proteins showed a high degree of polymorphism in most of the breeds studied. Pa3 fractions were clearly observed only in samples stored at -20 degrees C for more than 2 years. Prt1, Pa1 and Pa2 proteins are additional useful markers for parentage control in dogs. This study corroborated previously published results that dog plasma proteins, in general, show considerably more polymorphism than that reported for haemoglobin and for several blood cell enzymes in this species.

[Chédiak-Higashi syndrome].

As the Chédiak-Higashi Syndrome (CHS) is rare in various species of mammal and occurs almost only in very young to young animals, it is virtually unknown and may therefore pass unnoticed. For this reason, the symptoms as reported for example in man, cattle, cats and mink are brought together and compared in the present paper. The most important symptoms are dilution of the pigment of skin and fur and increased susceptibility to infection. Enlarged granules are found in leukocytes and various other types of cell. The basis for this defect should be sought at the level of the microtubules. Moreover this report is concerned with genetic features of this type of defect. The criteria to be applied in the diagnosis of the CHS are discussed.

Biochemical variants in dogs.

Biochemical variants of constituents of the blood are considered to be valuable markers of genes in studies on population genetics. They are being used for that purpose for human populations and also for populations of laboratory and farm animals. The present report is concerned with biochemical variants in dogs. In dog breeding an increasing interest is being shown in the origin of the breeds, in their mutual relations, and in the relationship with wild canidae. Since biochemically detectable variation can offer valuable information in this respect, an overall investigation of the possibilities for the detection of these variants has been made. In this study, eleven constituents of the blood of dogs were found to demonstrate clearly detectable genetic polymorphism. The genetic systems for these eleven constituents are described. The observed frequencies of the variants are reported.
