Is the HpO phenomenon in tropical populations really genetic?

Long-term studies of 98 unselected adults from a rural African community in Mali where malaria is endemic showed that the haptoglobin level of the blood increased significantly after 1 year of continuous anti-malarial treatment. This seems to indicate that hypo- or anhaptoglobinaemia in populations like this may in a considerable number of cases have a non-genetic basis.

Glycerol-ester hydrolase from human small intestine and its possible role in the degradation of neutral lipids.

A glycerol-ester hydrolase has been characterized and partially purified (23-fold) from human small intestine. A pancreatic origin was excluded through the use of an immunoserum directed against human pancreatic juice, while a pharyngeal (gastric) origin was unlikely owing to the optimum pH range of activity of the gastric enzyme as compared to that of the intestinal enzyme. The glycerol-ester hydrolase is mainly active toward short- and medium-chain di- and triglycerides and toward micellar long-chain monoglycerides. A role in the absorption of neutral lipids, mainly in pathological situations, is postulated.

[Double contrast radiological study of the small intestine with duodeno-jejunal intubation. The technique used at the Nice University Hospital Centr with a report of first results (author's transl)].

The authors have carried out 80 radiological studies by duodeno-jejunal intubation using a tube which they themselves perfected. The technique is simple and easily reveals organic lesions. Barium studies of the small intestine via duodeno-jejunal intubation further makes it possible to assess its tone and peristalsis. The authors feel this technique to be the most suitable for this technique purpose.

[Metabolism of fibrinogen in the cirrhotic patient. Dynamic study by isotope method].

The authors studied the metabolism of fibrinogen labelled with iodine 125 in 57 cirrhotic patients and 25 controls. Their results show that if the 82 subjects are grouped according to biological period values (T) and plasma pool (N.I.) of each of them, 4 distinct populations emerge. In each of these 4 groups a physiopathological interpretation of fibrinogen metabolism may be proposed. In the context of consumption coagulopathies in cirrhosis, the examination is of real value and offers an objective criterion of therapeutic effectiveness.

[Immunocyte adherence and leukocyte migration inhibition tests in dogs infested with Leishmania donovani. Importance of lymphocyte conservation in liquid nitrogen].

A method of canine lymphocytes isolation and storage in liquid azote with DMSO is described. It was possible to use these lymphocytes in the immunocytoadherence and leucocytes migration inhibition tests in dogs infected with Leishmania donovani. The sensitisation was made with a soluble antigen from promastigotes of L. donovani braid by ultrasounds. The dogs with Leishmaniasis gave positive results. The controls without Leishmaniasis were negative. The tests with conserved lymphocytes were as satisfactory as the same tests with fresh lymphocytes.

[Bioclinical study of the electro-immunodiffusion technic for the assay of serum alpha fetoprotein].

The author discusses the result that may be expected in clinical medicine from an electro-immunodiffusion method for the detection of alpha-foetoprotein. The samples studied were obtained from pregnant women, patients with liver cell carcinoma or severe digestive diseases, whether malignant or not, and a few amniotic fluids and sera obtained from the umbilical cord. This simple, rapid method is characterized by a sensitivity threshold of about 300 ng/ml and permits one to detect about 75% of cases of liver cell carcinoma.
