BACKGROUND: The aim of this research was to observe changes in IGF-I and steroid hormones in postmenopausal women with benign and malignant ovarian tumors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The concentrations of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), 17-b-estradiol and progesterone were examined by radioimmunological assay in three groups of postmenopausal women: patients with malignant ovarian tumors, patients with benign ovarian tumors, and healthy women. In all three groups the age and body mass index (BMI) were comparable. RESULTS: The concentrations of IGF-I in the serum of the patients with malignant cancer were significantly lower. The concentrations of estradiol were significantly higher in the patients with both benign and malignant ovarian tumors as compared to the controls. CONCLUSIONS: Decreased IGF-I concentration in the serum of postmenopausal women with ovarian tumors may suggest that the tumor is malignant.
In 16 women with epilepsy aged 18 to 38 years cytohormonal investigations were carried out during menstrual cycle. Swabs were obtained from the upper one-third of the vagina, fixed and stained by the method of Schorr. Oestrogen activity indices (PI, EI, MI) and progesterone activity indices (FI, CI) were calculated. With the exception of 2 cases in all patients the cycles were abnormal. In 1 cycle high values of oestrogen activity indices were found. In 13 patients (80%) monophasic, hypoestrogenic, cycles were observed without progesterone activity in the second phase of the cycle. The authors believe that very long anticonvulsant treatment as well as lower efficiency of the hypothalamo-hypophyseal system may reduce the level of steroid hormones produced by the ovaries which must, however, be confirmed by further clinical and experimental investigations.
Two new analogs of captopril were synthesized. Inhibition of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) by these compounds in vitro and in vivo was determined using fluorimetric method. The obtained compounds were much weaker ACE inhibitors than captopril.
Cytohormonal smears taken from the women hospitalized due to threatened abortion were classified in four groups according to KPI, E.I., FI and CI values. Simultaneously in the vaginal section hormono-dependent enzymes (Al.,P.,Ac.,P., NADH2 t.r., ATP-ase, PAS reaction for glycogen) were studied. The investigated enzymes were compared with the values of cytohormonal indices, in intensity of cytochemical reaction. A distinct correlation was discovered between the intensity of the reactions for Al.,P.,ATP-ase and NADH2 t.r. and KPI, as well as for EI values which suggest either the balance of estrogens-progesteron or its disturbance.
