[Clinical value of ultrasonographic assessment of fetal hypotrophy and the effects of its treatment].

The clinical usefulness was assessed of ultrasonography in the study of fetal hypotrophism determining the parameters BIP, THQ and placental parameters. Fetal growth was assessed and in case of hypotrophism adequate therapeutic management was undertaken. The study was carried out on 56 pregnant women referred for diagnosis and treatment of fetal hypotrophism in the period 1983-1985. The control group comprised 56 women with physiological pregnancy. The study was carried out with examinations at weekly intervals from the 24th week of pregnancy till labour using a Hellige-Panavista unit with a 2.5 MHz probe. The BIP and THQ dimensions were calculated a together with placental parameters. The oestriol level was determined in 24-hour urine. The underlying disease and fetal hypotrophism were treated. The most valuable indicator for the determination of asymmetrical and symmetrical type of hypotrophism and for its monitoring was the BIP/THQ index. Ultrasonography makes possible a rapid and accurate diagnosis of fetal condition and control of its treatment. Ultrasonographic observation of the placenta is a source of valuable information for the obstetrician. Oestriol determination is without any greater significance for monitoring of fetal hypotrophism.

[Serum luteinizing hormone (LH) level during menstrual cycle in women treated for epilepsy].

In 22 women aged 18 to years treated for epilepsy with phenytoin (DPH) and phenobarbital (PB) the serum levels of LH were determined by radioimmunoassay on 8 days of various phases of the menstrual cycle. In 10 cases the attacks were related in time to the premenstrual phase of the cycle (group A), in 12 cases no such correlation was observed (group B). These results were compared with the results of similar investigations carried out in 8 women treated in hospital for ischalgia who received also DPH and PB or only PB (group C). A statistically significantly lower level of LH was found in group A in relation to groups B and C on the 13th and 22nd days of the cycle. Decreased LH level on the 22nd day may suggest that in women with attacks related to a phase of the menstrual cycle the corpus luteum may be failing with resulting deficiency of progesterone, which may be one of the factors increasing the readiness to attacks in the premenstrual phase. It may be supposed that DPH and PB given to patients with epilepsy may reduce the serum LH level.

Ibuprofen-induced gastrointestinal changes.

Effect of Ibuprofen on food requirements and body weight was studied in experimental animals. A considerable fall of rat body weight was observed, proportional to the administered dose and duration of treatment. Ibuprofen had no influence no food requirement. It was also demonstrated that Ibuprofen caused disturbances in intestinal motor function which might lead to the development of malabsorption syndrome.

Renin inhibitors containing statine and 6-aminohexanoic acid. Part III.

Five peptide renin inhibitors containing the sequence: Phe-His-Sta-epsilon Ahx (Sta = 4(S)-amino-3(S)-hydroxy-6-methylheptanoic acid, epsilon Ahx = 6-aminohexanoic acid) were synthesized and their potency was assayed in vitro by a spectrofluorometric method (assay of Leu-Val-Tyr-Ser released from N-acetyltetradecapeptide substrate by renin in the presence of an inhibitor). Their stability was tested by assay of Phe and Pro-Phe released after incubation with chymotrypsin. The most potent inhibitor was Boc-Phe-His-Sta-epsilon Ahx-OMe (IC50 = 5 x 10(-9) M/l), the most stable--Boc-Pro-Phe-His-Sta-epsilon Ahx-OMe (resistant to incubation with chymotrypsin for 4 h).
