Three experiments were carried out to determine the effects of autoclave cooking, extrusion and DL-methionine supplementation on the protein and energy value of cowpea. The two processes decreased the available lysine of cowpea from 6.3 to 5.7%. The starch content decreased from 50.7% in raw cowpea to 44.9% and 42.1% in cooked extruded cowpea, respectively. Cooking eliminated the trypsin inhibitor content of cowpea. Damaged starch increased from 0.3% in the raw cowpea, to 22.5% in cooked cowpea and to 30.5% in extruded cowpea. In the first experiment it was determined that the protein efficiency ratio (PER) in rats was not affected by cowpea processing (means = 1.17) and that DL-methionine supplementation increased (P less than 0.01) PER to 2.08. In the second experiment, it was established that energy digestibility of the diets used in the first experiment averaged 88.0% with no differences due to processing or supplementation. Digestible energy content (DE) was lower (P less than 0.01) in diets supplemented with DL-methionine (3.58, 3.56, 3.93) than in those without supplement (3.67, 3.93, 3.75). On the other hand, diets with extruded cowpea produced higher (P less than 0.01) DE (3.84 kcal/g) than diets with cooked cowpea (3.75 kcal/g). Classical (EM) and nitrogen corrected (EMn) metabolizable energy determined in chicks showed that both were higher (P less than 0.01) in cooked (3.01; 2.56 kcal/g) and extruded (3.16; 2.76 kcal/g) than in raw cowpeas (1.86; 1.81 kcal/g).

Authors report six cases on Burkitt's lymphoma seen during the last 18 months. In all of them a large ileocecal tumor was present and five of them had a bone marrow involvement. The ascitic fluid was positive in all cases. Three of the patients had a marked jaundice at diagnosis. The immunologic markers study on two of the cases, made evident that they belonged to type B. One of these two cases showed a component M in serum of the IgM type. As soon as chemotherapy started two of the cases showed marked metabolic disturbances. Three of the cases died and the three others remain free of disease for as long as two, 26 and 21 months. This report arises a comment epidemiologic importance of the increased frequency of Burkitt's lymphoma during the last months, as well as the clinic features of the six reported cases as compared to series published in non endemic areas on this topic.

After the parenteral injection of 1 g sodium salt of fosfomycin the serum levels of the antibiotic are detected in a series of eight adult patients with different degrees of chronic renal insufficiencies four of them submitted to periodical dialysis. The results obtained reveal that the levels as well as the time of elimination of fosfomycin maintain an obvious relation to the degree of renal insufficiency in the patients.

In this study, we performed the differential display technique to identify genes specifically expressed in human choriocarcinoma cell lines (JEG-3, JAR and BeWo) and normal placental term cells. Few differences were found among the expression profiles of the three choriocarcinoma cell lines and most of the differentially expressed genes were detected in normal term placenta. A total of 36 cDNA fragments were isolated and analysed. Of these, 19 sequences corresponded to regions in the human genome coding for potential novel genes. We confirmed by RT-PCR, the placental mRNA expression of three selected new human genes, on chromosomes 16q12, 9q32 and 6q22. The other 17 sequences showed high similarity to known human genes (like PSG3, FN1, PAI-2). Interestingly, the functions of five known proteins (from genes IK, TRA-1, HERPUD1, UBA-2, and TRAP240) have not yet been well characterized in placenta tissue. In addition, new alternative spliced mRNAs were detected for IK, TRAP240 and PLAC3 genes. The differential expression of the PAI-2 gene among the choriocarcinoma cell lines was also confirmed. The genes identified in this analysis will be of interest for future studies regarding both a better understanding of the biology of the trophoblast cell and the formation of placental tumors.
We investigated the prevalence of the various genotypes of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in 281 patients evaluated between March, 2000 and March, 2002 in the health area of Elche. Of these patients, 55 were coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The genotype was related to viral load and the co-existence of HIV infection. Likewise, the relationship between these parameters and the presence of the HCV core antigen was established. The results indicate that genotype 1b was the most prevalent (38.4%) followed by genotype 3a (23.1%). Patients coinfected with HIV presented fewer infections due to group 1 genotypes (p < 0.05).Patients with HIV presented a greater viral load in all the genotypes, with genotype 3 presenting a high viral load. Detection of the HCV core antigen showed a close correlation with viral load determinations. Although not yet sufficiently assessed, determination of the HCV core antigen constitutes a simple technique that could eventually contribute to improving the management of patients with chronic HCV hepatitis.
