Poisoning by Gyromitra : a possible mechanism.

"Gyromitra" are considered to be edible mushrooms although their potential toxicity has been long known. They have caused numerous accidents, sometimes lethal. Historical accounts of poisoning are reported and the authors describe the main characteristics : inconstant toxicity, influence of repetitive ingestions and variable individual sensitivity. Knowing the "gyromitrin" (N-methyl-N-formyl-acetyl-hydrazone) can be converted into methyl-hydrazine, the authors suggest a relation between individual sensitivity to the mushrooms and variation of every body's ability to carry out such a conversion. Several metabolites of gyromitrin can produce enzyme activation ith subsequent synthesis of methylhydrazine. The cumulative activating role of consecutive ingestions is emphasized.

[Binding of fluorescein-labelled lectins on trophozoites and cysts of 3 strains of Toxoplasma gondii].

The presence of carbohydrates on the surface of trophozoites and cysts of Toxoplasma gondii was investigated using 26 fluorescein labelled lectins. Three strains of parasites at different phases were tested; intra-cellular, intra-cystic and free trophozoites did not stain. However Soja hispida lectin intensly bind on cyst wall. The fluorescence could be eliminated by preincubation with certain carbohydrates, but not with trophozoite soluble antigen. These results suggest to the authors that cyst wall may be of host rather than of parasite origin.

[Oral protozoans and diabetes: study in 117 patients].

A study on the presence of oral Entamoeba gingivalis and Trichomonas tenax has been carried out on calculus or dental plaque from 117 diabetic subjects. Statistical analysis of results shows no correlation between diabetes and protozoa. The same frequency was found between diabetic and normal subjects. Nevertheless, a significant relation has been found between the diabetes and the yeasts.

[A study of the frequency of protozoa and yeasts isolated from the parodontium of 509 subjects (author's transl)].

The protozoa Entamoeba gingivalis and Trichomonas tenax together with yeasts of the genus Candida were investigated in the mouth (gums or neck of tooth) of 509 healthy or diabetic subjects. A study of the possible correlation between presence of these parasites and various local or general factors, showed that neither the sex, maxillo-facial anomalies nor smoking had any influence on parasite incidence. Entamoeba gingivalis was encountered in 85 per cent of subjects free from parodontopathy. Numerous factors influenced the presence of Trichomonas tenax: age, social status, alcohol consumption, dental condition and gingival pathology. Presence of Candida was associated with diabetes, poor buccal hygiene and dental condition.

Use of yeasts in affinity chromatography.

The use of the yeast Candida lipolytica as a support in affinity chromatography for the purification of lectins of Ricinus communis seeds has been studied. A comparison was made with columns of erythrocyte stromas and Sepharose 4B with respect to protein yields, the agglutinating activity yield, and the electrophoretic characteristics of the eluted substances. Even though the yield is less than with other supports, it does appear that the yeast columns represent an effective method for the purification of ricin lectins.

[7 cases of trisomy 2q34 leads to 2qter resulting from a familial t(2;8)(q34;23)].

Seven patients from two different families are trisomic 2q34 leads to 2qter due to segregation of a familial t(2;8)(q34;p23). The clinical features are characteristic: microcephaly, a narrow forehead with bossing and temporal retraction, hypertelorism, palpebral fissures slanted downwards, large irides, and a very concave margin of the lower eyelid. Mental retardation is severe with a mean IQ of 50.

[Fixation of various lectins at the surface of Crithidia luciliae].

Suspensions of Crithidia luciliae have been treated with 30 lectins: protozoans are agglutinated only by lectins inhibited with oses of structures I an II according to Mäkelä, and by lectins the site of fixation of which are unknown. The use of 5 lectins conjugated to fluorescein corroborate that lectins in congruity with group I and II, contrarily to those of group III, fasten upon the membrane and the flagella of Crithidia luciliae.

[Erythrocyte stroma included in polyacrylamide gel. Applications to affinity chromatography].

Stromata prepared with human or animal red blood cells are suspended in acrylamide solution. Gel as prepared for electrophoresis is dispersed, before use, and can be used in chromatographic columns for the retention of agglutinins. Lectins, e.g., where first absorbed and then eluted with solution of inhibitory sugar or with acid buffer. Some applications are mentioned.
