After pepsin digestion, all of the carbohydrates in ovalbumin were recovered in two glycopeptides, Glu-Glu-Lys-Tyr-Asn(CHO)-Leu-Thr-Ser-Val and Glu-Gln-Lys-Tyr-Asn(CHO)-Leu-Thr-Ser-Val. Almond glycopeptidase released quantitatively oligosaccharides from the glycopeptides. The products from both glycopeptides contained both the high-mannose-type oligosaccharides and the hybrid-type oligosaccharides in the same ratio. Thus, either the high-mannose-type or the hybrid-type oligosaccharide is attached to the unique asparagine residue in the ovalbumin molecule.
A meningioma of the tela choroidea of the third ventricle is rare. CT and detailed analysis of angiographic findings in such a case are presented. Ct facilitated the detection of rough location of the tumor and the prediction of its histological features. Carotid and vertebral angiographies were utilized in detailing the three-dimensional, gross anatomical relationship between tumor and the surrounding brain structures. Vertebral angiography also contributed to predicting the histology of the tumor.

Three cases of angiographically demonstrated fenestration of the anterior cerebral artery are reported. Fenestration occurred at the medial half of the horizontal segment of the anterior cerebral artery in all cases. Its embryology and clinical significance are briefly discussed, and the anatomical and radiological literature on fenestration of the anterior cerebral artery is reviewed.
Two patients with primary intraventricular hemorrhage following mild head injury are presented. Both patients experienced a rapid loss of consciousness after a lucid interval following the head injury. Conray ventriculography or computerized tomography revealed intraventricular hematoma originating in the third ventricle and causing an obstructive hydrocephalus. Both patients made good recoveries promptly after ventricular drainage.
The presence of glia maturation factor (GMF)-like activity was demonstrated in rat astrocytoma cells (C6 cells). The extracts of C6 cells enhanced the DNA synthesis of cultured glioblasts 3-fold at the maximum, inducing such morphological changes as extrusion of processes. C6 cells also showed a proliferative response to the extracts, though the responsiveness in terms of effective concentration of C6 extracts was about a half of the glioblast responsiveness. The extracts lowered growth rate of neuroblastoma cells and especially decreased their DNA synthesis without a morphological differentiation.
The nucleotide sequences of the first 422 base pairs from the left-hand end and the first 274 base pairs from the right-hand end of phi 29 DNA were determined by using the chemical degradation method of Maxam and Gilbert. The data indicate that phi 29 DNA has inverted terminal repetitions that are six base pairs long 5' (-A-A-A-G-T-A-). No perfectly self-complementary sequence exists within the terminal regions of phi 29 DNA, suggesting that DNA replication via a self-priming mechanism is improbable. The putative early promoter sequences were found in both ends of the phi 29 DNA. The results of the sequence determination are discussed in relation ship to models proposed for the mechanism of replication of linear DNA molecules.
The genome of Bacillus phage phi 29 contains covalently linked protein at both ends. These DNA terminal proteins are essential for phi 29 DNA replication. We have isolated phi 29 terminal protein from each end separately and compared their two-dimensional peptide maps. Our results showed the two proteins to be identical. The DNAs of four phages examined (phi 15, Nf, M2Y, and GA-1) also contain protein at both ends of the DNA molecules. The chymotryptic peptide maps of these DNA terminal proteins have been compared with the map of the phi 29 terminal protein. Despite the similarities in molecular size, peptide maps of the terminal proteins show clear differences among the unrelated phages. These results are consistent with the idea that the terminal proteins are encoded by viral DNA rather than by the host chromosome. We have also determined the nucleotide sequences of the termini of four phage DNAs and compared them with the sequence of phi 29 DNA. The sequence data indicate that all of these phages DNA contain short inverted terminal repeats: 5'A-A-A-G-T-A for phi 29 and phi 15, 5' A-A-A-G-T-A-A-G for Nf and M2Y, and 5' A-A-A-T-A-G-A for GA-1.
The urinary thiol proteinase inhibitors u-TPI1 and u-TPI2 were partially purified from human urine by gel filtration on Sephadex G-50 and Sephadex G-100 columns, and affinity chromatography on a trypsin.chymotrypsin-Chromagel A-2 column. They showed similar inhibition spectra to that of plasma inhibitors, inhibiting ficin strongly and papain moderately, but not inhibiting trypsin and chymotrypsin. The molecular weights of u-TPI1 and u-TPI2 were determined to be 76,000 and 22,500 by gel filtration on Sephadex G-150 and G-75, respectively, and their isoelectric points were found to be 4.6 and 4.8 by isoelectrofocusing. u-TPI1 and u-TPI2 were labile at acidic pH, but stable at neutral and alkaline pH. Both inhibitors were relatively thermostable, showing no decrease in activity on heating up to 50 degrees C for 1 h. The antibody against plasma thiol proteinase inhibitor alpha1-TPI suppressed the activities of the urinary inhibitors significantly, and on double immunodiffusion formed clear precipitin lines with both u-TPI1 and u-TPI2. On immunoelectrophoresis u-TPI1 migrated in the alpha 2-region and u-TPI2 in the beta 1-region. It is concluded from these data that the urinary thiol proteinase inhibitors are degradation products of the plasma inhibitors.
