A case of deep sylvian meningioma is reported which is unusual in the aspect that the initial symptoms were headache and vomiting due to intracerebral hemorrhage from meningioma. After evacuation of hematoma in the right temporal lobe and biopsy of the tumor, it was found to be meningothelial meningioma with psammoma bodies. Cerebral angiography showed characteristic findings of intrasylvian vascular tumor. Complete removal of this tumor was performed under microscopy, dissecting dense adhesion between the tumor and main branches of the middle cerebral artery. Consequently, the patient showed only slight impairment of fine movement of his left fingers. Deep sylvian meningioma designated by Cushing and Eisenhart is very rare. This case is the only one of deep sylvian meningioma in our whole series of 181 intracranial meningiomas and probably the twentieth case reported so far in the literature.
In attempts to study drug-induced auditory impairment we measured the auditory threshold in rats, using the shuttle box method. The auditory threshold with physical impairment of ears was also measured. The sensitivity of the rats to the auditory response was decreased to about 15dB in cotton-stuffed ears and to about 20dB in pierced eardrums. In this experiment, we used drugs known to be ototoxic; dihydrostreptomycin sulfate, kanamycin sulfate, neomycin sulfate and ethacrynic acid. With successive administration of each drug, the auditory sensitivity in rats decreased. This shuttle box method is easily facilitated and the auditory threshold of many rats can be measured over a short period. This approach may be a useful method for screening ototoxic drugs.

Two cases of the anterior inferior cerebellar arteries originating from the cavernous and precavernous segments of the internal carotid artery are reported. In one case the course of the anomalous artery was confirmed by autopsy. This anomalous artery is considered to be a variant of persistent primitive trigeminal artery. The clinical significance is disussed briefly.
The DNA of the Bacillus subtilis temperate phage phi 3T is not susceptible to cleavage by the restriction endonuclease HaeIII, although it is cut by many other restriction enzymes. The host DNA from uninfected cells is cut by HaeIII. We show that phi 3T DNA propagated in a restriction-modification-defective Escherichia coli cell can be digested by HaeIII. Thus, phi 3T DNA does contain the nucleotide recognition sequence of HaeIII. We suggest that this phage induces the modification of its own DNA. In support of this mechanism we show that extracts prepared from phi 3T-infected cells contain an activity which in the presence of S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) can modify lambda DNA against cleavage by HaeIII. The same in vitro-modified DNA is still susceptible to cleavage by other restriction endonucleases.

UNLABELLED: This paper reports our experience of therapeutic embolization in the external carotid artery region. Therapeutic embolization was done for the purpose of decreasing hemorrhage during operation. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Therapeutic embolization was done in 6 cases of meningioma, 1 case of capillary hemangioma of the cheek and one case of olfactory neuroblastoma. Catheterization was done through the common carotid artery in adults and done through the femoral artery in an infant. Small pieces of Gelfoam were used as emboli. Emboli, 1 X 1 X 0.5 mm in size, were instilled with normal saline. One embolus was used in one instillation as a rule. A larger embolus was used for occlusion of a larger artery. Heparin was not used through entire procedure. Four illustrative cases are presented. when a feeder of a tumor is occluded by artificial emboli, two kinds of effect can be resulted. when emboli lodge within the tumor or in a feeding artery distal to arterial anastomoses, blood is no longer supplied to the tumor (embolization effect). On the other hand, when a feeding artery is occluded by emboli at the point proximal to arterial anastomoses, blood supply to the tumor is transiently reduced but it is soon restored through arterial anastomoses (ligation effect). To minimize bleeding during surgery it is very important to gain embolization effect. For this purpose small emboli should be instilled repeatedly until embolization effect is established. Then ligation effect should be obtained, if necessary, by injection lower emboli. Operation was performed on the day following embolization in cases of meningioma. In a case of capillary hemangioma of the cheek operation was performed three days after embolization and in a case of olfactory neuroblastoma surgery was performed two days after embolization. In all cases the primary purpose to minimize bleeding during operation was achieved. No untoward side effects were encountered in this series. The ophthalmic artery may arise from the middle meningeal artery. The vertebral artery might be visualized through the collateral from the occipital artery. We should pay attention to these vascular anomalies before embolization to prevent possible catastrophe.

Of 763 patients with carcinoma of the thyroid who had undergone a primary operation between 1948 and 1970, 705 were observed for more than five years. Included were 545 patients with papillary carcinoma. 123 with follicular carcinoma, 59 with microcancer, 30 with undifferentiated carcinoma and six with medullary carcinoma. The relative survival rate for patients with pure undifferentiated carcinoma one year after operation was 27 per cent and that for those with mixed undifferentiated carcinoma was 24 per cent. For patients with differentiated carcinomas, the most important factors affecting the prognosis were age and sex. The 15 year survival rates for women less than 40 years of age with papillary or follicular carcinoma were 102 and 100 per cent, respectively, while for women more than 40 years with papillary or follicular carcinoma, they were 90 and 84 per cent, respectively. For men more than 40 years of age with papillary carcinoma, the relative survival rate was 67 per cent. The size of the tumor and the types of operation did not affect the prognosis in patients less than 40 years. The presence of chronic thyroiditis also had no effect upon the prognosis. The relative survival rate with tumors up to 99 grams in weight, after 20 years, was almost 100 per cent in women less than 40 years of age, while for women more than 40 years of age the survival rates were 95 per cent with tumors weighing less than 20 grams and 72 per cent with those weighing 20 to 99 grams, an indication that tumor size may affect prognosis in older patients.

A nucleotidase specific for 2'-nucleotides was localized in both the soluble and the synaptosomal fractions of rat brain. The enzyme was partially purified from the soluble fraction of bovine brain. The s20,w was 4.9 S with an estimated molecular weight of about 70 000. The optimum pH was 8.0 and Km value for 2'-AMP was 5.5 . 10(-4) M. The substrate and inhibitor specificities of the enzyme were examined. The nucleotidase has an absolute requirement for Mg2+ but neither Fe3+ nor Ca2+ acted as replacement ions. In fact, Mn2+ and Ca2+ inhibited the Mg2+-dependent 2'-nucleotidase.
A physical map of the genome of Bacillus subtilis bacteriophage phi 3T was constructed by ordering the fragments produced by cleavage of phi 3T DNA with restriction endonucleases AvaII (2 fragments), BglI (2 fragments), SmaI (3 fragments), BamHI (6 fragments), SalI (7 fragments), AvaI (7 fragments), SacI (12 fragments), PstI (14 fragments), and BglII (26 fragments). Two techniques were used to order the fragments: (1) Sets of previously ordered restriction fragments were isolated and redigested with the endonuclease whose cleavage sites were to be mapped. (2) Fragments located near the ends of the genome or near the ends of other restriction fragments were ordered by treating the DNA with lambda exonuclease prior to restriction endonuclease cleavage. The susceptibility of phi 3T DNA to 15 other restriction endonucleases is also reported.
Susceptibility of Bacillus subtilis phage phi 29 DNA to 34 different restriction endoculceases was determined. Three enzymes, BglI, XbaI and BstEII, were found to cleave phi 29 DNA only once at specific sites. The sites of these single cleavages have been mapped. Thirteen enzymes did not cut phi 29 DNA. phi 29 HindIII DNA fragments inserted into pBR313 plasmid and propagated in Escherichia coli, were resistant to these restriction endonucleases. This result suggests that the insusceptibility is due to the absence of the nucleotide sequences on phi 29 recognized by the enzymes, and not to the presence of modified nucleotides.
