Comorbidity of psychiatric and communication disorders in children.

The co-occurrence of psychiatric and communication disorders in children is considerable. Many children who are treated by mental health professionals are also in need of speech and language services. This article discusses comorbidity and outlines communication problems that accompany a variety of childhood psychiatric conditions. Empiric studies and clinical impressions of these co-occurring problems are described.

Preadolescent suicidal behavior: the role of cognitive functioning.

The recent suicidal behavior of fifty-three hospitalized preadolescents was assessed in interviews with children and their parents. Children described by their parents as more suicidal scored higher on measures of verbal intelligence and language production than their less suicidal counterparts, with unique variance predicted only by language production ability. The results suggest that parents of preadolescents with better language production skills may be more aware of their youngsters' suicidal thoughts than parents of children with poorer language production ability.

Unrecognized language and speech deficits in preadolescent psychiatric inpatients.

Of 55 psychiatrically hospitalized preadolescents with DSM-III-R diagnoses that are not commonly associated with language deficits, 60% were determined to have language or speech deficits, although only 38% had ever received speech or language therapy. The clinical implications of these findings are discussed and guidelines for practice outlined.

Importance of communication training for psychiatric residents and mental health trainees.

Through the illustration of a clinical vignette and excerpts from interviews with trainees, this paper suggests that communication and communication disorders are essential issues in child psychiatry training. The vignette shows how communication issues pervade a multidisciplinary psychoeducational day treatment program. The importance of communication in the clinical experience and its impact on the professional preparation of psychiatry residents and mental health trainees are examined, and conclusions and recommendations for the goals of a training program in child psychiatry are presented which expand upon those findings.

Communication issues in Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Children with Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) evidence a variety of pragmatic deficits and are particularly at risk for other speech and language disorders. Speech and language pathologists in educational settings have the special expertise needed for interpretation and treatment of communication issues associated with ADHD. They should contribute more directly to the multi-modality treatment team in creating management programs for these children.
