Icosahedral models and viruses: a critical evaluation.

The evidence for a 42 capsomere structure for the capsid of the papova viruses and 92 for reovirus and woundtumor viruses is corroborated. Some of the difficulties inherent in comparing large-scale icosahedral models with high-resolution electron micrographs of virus particles displaying cubic symmetry are discussed.

Recognition and quantitation of herpesvirus particles in human vesicular lesions.

Herpesvirus particles from crude vesicular fluid of a patient were stained with uranyl acetate and potassium phosphotungstate, and then were identified and counted by electron microscopy. Virus was seen and quantitated in all the samples taken from five vesicles. Specimens from human lesions can be prepared and examined within 3 hours, permitting rapid presumptive identification of herpesvirus.

An aluminum marker for the differentiation and separation of virulent and attenuated polioviruses.

A new character, the A marker, for polioviruses is described. In the presence of Al(+++) (1 to 100 mM) attenuated, but not virulent, strains of type 1 and type 2 polioviruses are stabilized so that they resist thermal inactivation at 50 degrees C. Differences between the attenuated and virulent type 3 strains studied were of the opposite character and less marked. By the use of optimal concentrations of Al(+++) (12 mM for type 1 and 1 mM for type 2) attenuated strains can be separated from mixtures containing virulent type 1 or 2 strains. The A marker was found to be correlated with the d but not the rct/40 or T marker. The A marker has been used for following genetic changes of vaccine strains after their multiplication in man.

Papova virus group.

The papilloma, polyoma, and vacuolating agents seem to form a natural group of tumor viruses, for which the name papova virus group is proposed. Members of the group have the following properties: 45 mmicro diameter, deoxyribonucleic acid core, 42 capsomeres, absence of essential lipids, thermal resistance, slow growth cycle with multiplication within the cell nucleus, and tumorigenicity.
