Effect of tobacco smoking on selected immunologic indices.

Investigations performed in 85 clinically healthy smokers indicated the decrease in the total count of T lymphocytes depending on the smoking time and simultaneous lack of alterations in the B cell count, the count of "non-T, non-B" cells, was increased in smokers. These changes were accompanied by lowered levels of IgA and IgM in the blood serum. The authors discuss the significance of their observations in the light of controversial data from literature.

[Enzyme deficiency in the lymphocytes of tobacco smokers].

In the peripheral blood lymphocytes of 85 men aged 18 to 42 years, smoking cigarettes by 2 to 25 years, the intracellular enzymes activity having varying localization, has been determined by the use of semiquantitative histochemical methods. The lymphocytes from subjects smoking not more than 10 years the increased activity of acid phosphatase, leucyl aminopeptidase, and lactic dehydrogenase as well as decreased activity of N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase has been stated. In contrast, in subjects smoking more than 10 years the intracellular activity of acid phosphatase, beta-glucuronidase, N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase and lactic dehydrogenase in lymphocytes has been diminished. Above enzymatic deficiencies could represent the biochemical basis of functional alterations of lymphocytes from smokers observed by numerous authors.

[Superficial structure of lymphocytes from peripheral blood in patients with laryngeal cancer examined by scanning electron microscopy].

In 20 laryngeal cancer patients and in 20 normals 1927 and 1950 respectively the blood lymphocytes were examined by use of scan microscopy. The great differences were disclosed between the patients and normals. It was pointed out the considerable differences between patients and normals in the number of lymphocytes with plain surface (lymphocytes "G") in opposition to the intermediary and ciliated lymphocytes (differences statistically significant). In laryngeal cancer patients there were the significantly lower number of lymphocytes with ciliated surface (lymphocytes "Sz"). In the patient group there were the considerable differences in superficial structure of lymphocytes, probably as a response to cancer disease.

[Synergistic effect of organic solvents and tobacco smoke on serum immunoglobulin levels in humans].

The IgG, IgA, IgM, IgD and IgE levels in the blood serum was determined using the radial immunodiffusion method--the Tri-Partigen and the Partigen plated produced by Behringin 49 male non-smokers, 47 subjects who had been smoking for more than 10 years, 19 non-smokers occupationally exposed to organic solvents and 41 smokers exposed to the above-mentioned chemical compounds. It was found that both tobacco smoke and organic solvents, when acting separately, diminish the IgA and IgG level in the serum. Additionally, in the smokers the lowering of the IgM level occurred. In smokers occupationally exposed to benzene and its homologues the decrease in the IgA, IgG and IgM level in the serum was more significant than in those exposed to either tobacco smoke or organic solvents. The authors emphasize the role of smoking in the evaluation of the immunotoxic effect of various factors of industrial origin.

[Results of the exposure to ethylene oxide with special reference to its carcinogenic and hematotoxic effects].

The aim of the present paper is to present a review of the effects of exposure to ethylene oxide. Carcinogenic and genotoxic effects of this gas are particularly dangerous for medical staff employed at nonthermal sterilizing of medical equipment. In these workers ethylene oxide induces various chromosomal aberrations, an increased sister chromatid exchange frequency and leukemias, alimentary tract tumors and urogenital malignancies incidence. Moreover, in patients dialysed using ethylene oxide sterilized equipment, anaphylactoidal reactions were observed. Ethylene oxide increased incidence of brain tumors, stomach cancer and malignancies of hemopoietic tissue in experimental animals. Additionally, ethylene oxide caused a decrease in stem cell number in mice spleen, disturbances in the mitotic cycle of bone marrow cells and alkylation of hemoglobin in erythrocytes. An increase in the total number of peripheral blood leukocytes accompanied by the elevation of neutrophil percentage and a decrease in the proportion of lymphocytes represent another aspect of the effect of ethylene oxide.

The surface structure of peripheral blood lymphocytes from patients with laryngeal carcinoma evaluated by scanning electron microscopy.

Using the scanning electron microscopic technique the surface structure of the peripheral blood lymphocytes has been studied in 20 men aged 46 to 62 years with the laryngeal carcinoma diagnosed clinically and histopathologically. The control group consisted of 20 healthy men aged 39 to 58 years. According to the international classification 15 of 20 patients studied showed the T3N0M0 stage of the disease and other five the T4N0M0 stage respectively. The peripheral blood lymphocytes of the patients showed significantly greater variability of the surface structure as compared with the controls. The characteristic pattern of the lymphocytes in patients with cancer of the larynx was quantitative increase in numbers of lymphocytes having smooth surface deprived of microvilli and significant decrease of cells exhibiting numerous surface microvilli; these cells may correspond to the T and the B cell series, respectively. Moreover, the patients showed significant, approximately threefold increase in number of lymphocytes having the intermediate surface morphology between above mentioned two basic lymphocyte topographical types. According to the authors opinion above differences between the lymphocytes of patients with cancer of the larynx and those from healthy subjects are associated with the antitumor response of the lymphocytes.

The X-ray microanalysis method for investigation of chemical composition of normal and pathologic human peripheral blood lymphocytes.

The X-ray microanalysis method for investigation of chemical composition, mainly trace elements, of normal and pathologic human peripheral blood lymphocytes has been presented. The method in question consists of two stages. During the first stage the scanning electron microscope with the energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer has been used. The second stage of the method consisted of employing the above microscope with the microwave dispersive spectrometer. The method enables the short-term determination of the various elements content within the lymphocytes with particular insight into the content of elements in a single cell. The preliminary investigations showed significant differences in the content of chlorine, sulfur and lead in normal human lymphocytes and that from patients with cancer of the larynx.

Enzymatic deficiencies of the immune system cells in patients with cancer of the larynx and other malignancies.

Activity of N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase, beta-glucuronidase, and acid phosphatase and myeloperoxidase was determined in neutrophils and lymphocytes of patients with cancer of the larynx and precancerous states of the larynx as well as--for comparative reasons--in patients with malignant tumors of female generation organs, breast carcinoma, cancer of the stomach and endometriosis. The main result of investigations performed was in fact that intracellular deficiency of beta-glucuronidase within the neutrophils characterizes patients with cancer and precancerous states of the larynx. Patients with cancer of the larynx show additionally a deficiency of neutrophil myeloperoxidase. Deficiency of N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase occurs, in contrast, in patients with malignancies of female generation organ. Activity of myeloperoxidase in neutrophils from patients with gastric carcinoma is slightly elevated.
