Changes in serum and cerebrospinal fluid enzyme activity after head injury.

We studied simultaneously in serum (S) and CSF (L) the enzyme activities of GOT, GPT, LDH, ICDH, MDH, ALD, and CPK in 28 patients with head injuries divided into three groups according to the severity of the trauma. We found a correlation between severity of brain lesion and enzyme activity. The best correlation was found for SGOT, SCPK, LGOT, LLDH, LMDH and LCPK. We do not believe that enzyme activity is of prognostic value. We think that further studies should be made of the specific isoenzymes of the Central Nervous System.

Tension hydrothorax: a rare complication of continuous cyclical peritoneal dialysis.

Continuous cyclical peritoneal dialysis (CCPD) is a well-established, effective method of maintenance dialysis in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Massive hydrothorax producing hemodynamic compromise (tension hydrothorax) has been documented as an infrequent complication of both acute temporary peritoneal dialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). We recently saw a patient with massive hydrothorax as a consequence of CCPD. The etiology of this rare condition is thought to be that of a diaphragmatic defect with a one-way valve mechanism. Diagnosis is made by aspiration of the pleural fluid and estimation of pleural fluid glucose. Management of these patients requires pleural drainage and changing to hemodialysis if possible.

Investigation of the beta-lactamase activity of Prototheca zopfii.

A total of 52 strains of Prototheca zopfii were studied with a series of beta-lactam compounds in order to test possible existence of beta-lactamase capable of inactivating these compounds. The method used was based on the iodimetric technique. Results showed the existence of beta-lactamase which worked in different degrees depending on the beta-lactam compounds.

An anionic galactomannan polysaccharide gum from a newly-isolated lactose-utilizing bacterium. I. Strain description and gum characterization.

As part of an effort to obtain microorganisms able to produce polysaccharide gums from whey and whey permeate, soil samples from farm fields regularly treated with whey were screened for bacteria able to produce gums from lactose. The most promising organism isolated (ATCC 55046) is a facultative anaerobe, tentatively identified as a new Erwinia species on the basis of biochemical and morphological tests. The organism produces a polysaccharide gum from lactose and other sugars (herein named lactan gum) composed of mannose, galactose, and galacturonic acid with an approximate molar ratio of 5:3:2 and containing no organic acid modifying groups. The weight average molecular weight of the gum is approximately 7 x 10(6). Aqueous solutions of lactan gum exhibit shear-thinning and elastic flow behavior with an estimated power law model flow index of 0.26 at 1% (w/w) gum. The viscosity of aqueous 1% (w/w) lactan gum solutions is stable over a pH range of 2-11, being particularly stable in alkaline environments. Aqueous 1% (w/w) gum solutions at pH 5-11 show excellent thermostability, retaining at least 80% of the original viscosity after being heated to 121 degrees C for 15 min. These flow properties indicate potential industrial applications in food and nonfood products requiring a moderate degree of thickening, wet-end additives and coating agents for paper products, ceramics, detergents, and binders for building materials.

Prevalence of anti-hepatitis C virus antibodies in positive FTA-ABS non-drug abusing female prostitutes in Spain.

The prevalence of antibodies against Hepatitis C Virus (anti-HCV antibodies) and its association with the presence of treponemal antibodies (FTA-ABS) was studied in 227 non-drug abusing female prostitutes. The overall anti-HCV antibody prevalence was 8.8%, and a significantly higher prevalence of anti-HCV antibodies was found in prostitutes testing positive for FTA-ABS (19.4%) than in prostitutes testing negative for FTA-ABS (3.9%) (PR = 5.023, P less than 0.001). No statistical association was found between patient age or the duration of prostitution and the presence of anti-HCV antibodies.
