Androgens and bone mineral content in patients with subtotal thyroidectomy for benign nodular disease.

To investigate the influence of thyroid surgery on the skeleton and different hormones a well characterized patient group of 24 women was selected who had undergone subtotal thyroidectomy for euthyroid benign nodular disease and remained euthyroid after the operation. Bone mineral content was determined in lumbar vertebrae, femoral neck and radius by dual and single photon absorptiometry. The serum levels of calcitonin, dehydroepiandrosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone-sulphate, androstenedione, total testosterone, cortisol and 25-hydroxyvitamin D were measured. A control group was created of 48 healthy female subjects. No reduction in bone mass was observed at the measured sites compared to appropriate controls. Beside normal bone mineral content significantly elevated serum levels of dehydroepiandrosterone (27.4 +/- 10.4 vs. 20.8 +/- 6.9 nmol/l) and androstenedione 9.3 +/- 3.3 vs. 6.6 +/- 2.2 nmol/l) were found without any clinical sign of androgen excess. There was no correlation between bone mineral content and these androgen levels. The serum calcitonin levels of all patients were low. With regard to the previously reported interactions among androgen, calcitonin and bone metabolism, our results raise the possibility of a relationship between higher androgen levels and preserved bone mass in these patients, while normal bone mineral content and calcitonin deficiency in these patients does not inevitably indicate that calcitonin does not affect bone tissue in adults.

On statistical comparison of two diagnostic tests.

A one-sample hypothesis testing method is presented for comparing the accuracy of two diagnostic tests. Costs and inconveniences related to the false positive and false negative diagnostic test results, to the extent that they are quantifiable, are considered as measures of the importance of avoiding misclassification. The use of the proposed method is illustrated by comparing the effectiveness of aspiration biopsy cytology and frozen section in detecting malignant thyroid disease.

Study of the relationships between pericarditis and osteopathy in chronic haemodialysis.

Statistically significant correlations were demonstrable between the incidence of bone abnormalities due to parathyroid hyperfunction and of pericarditis in 130 patients maintained on chronic haemodialysis. Parathyroid hormone is regarded on these grounds as one of the possible factors accounting for the production of non-infective uraemic pericarditis.

Differences in [3H]-thymidine uptake of lymph node cells stimulated by Con A and PHA in H-2 congenic mouse strains.

The genetic control of the lymphocyte responsiveness to Con A and PHA-P has been studied by using inbred, H-2 congenic mouse strains. Segregation studies were carried out on F1 and backcross mice of a high and a low responder strain. According to the results, there is a strong correlation between the responsiveness of lymph node cells to mitogens and H-2 haplotypes in different H-2 congenic strains of mice and in different backcross generations. High responsiveness to PHA-P is associated with H-2b, while low responsiveness with H-2a or H-2k haplotypes, but the correlation is the inverse in response to Con A, in the parental strains and backcross mice as well. The magnitude of the responses to both Con A and PHA-P was found to be intermediate in F1 heterozygotes of a low and high responder parental strain. The effect of other non H-2 genes on the responsiveness to these mitogens has also been demonstrated.

Changes in blood coagulation due to pancreas transplantation in dogs.

Blood coagulation was studied in the course of 11 pancreatectomies and 7 pancreas transplantations. Comparison of the postoperative changes in the fibrinogen level suggests the important role of the normal pancreas in fibrinogen generation. Investigation of the indices of the coagulation and fibrinolytic system revealed in the post-transplantation period a shift in the activity of the coagulation indices towards hypercoagulability. The increased fibrinogen level, the inhibited fibrinolysis and the elevated activity of the coagulation factors are assumed to be responsible for the high incidence of thrombotic complications associated with transplantation of the pancreas.
