Intermediate forms of epileptic attacks almost exclusively begin in child age. As a rule, the clinical picture shows partial attacks and electroencephalographically generalised activity. Epileptic predisposition and possibilities of exogenous damage are present in an equally high degree. In some cases, there are a large number of psychic pecularities, combination with tonoclonic attacks and therapy resistance. Sometimes asymmetry of the paroxysmal activity, focal peak potentials, varying findings in observation over a period of some years are found in the electroenzephalogram. Among our own patients there were 20 such intermediate forms among a total of 141 epileptics.

A report is given on 82 patients suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS) who were treated over a period of up to a maximum of eight years - average treatment 4-6 years. The best results were found in patients passing through an acute episode. Among the chronic-progressive cases, 5.1 per cent of the patients showed an improvement. In 24.4 per cent of the cases the clinical picture remained unchanged. 64.1 per cent showed a deterioration. Side-effects were gastric complaints, considerable leucocyte depression, oedemas, loss of hair, strumata, increase in transaminases, recrudescence of mycosis and pyoderma. In one case a state of confusion was observed. - Special criteria for the Imurek treatment are recommended. The necessity of a closed-meshed supervision of the patients is pointed out.
A report is given on the working capacity of 431 patients suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS) who were treated as inpatients at the neurologic-psychiatric clinic of the Medical Academy of Dresden in the period from 1960 to 1977. Leaving out of account the age when the disease began, the course of the disease and the symptoms, 84 per cent of the patients still alive were still able to work after 1 to 5 years, 80.1 per cent after 6 to 10 years and 75 per cent after more than 21 years. Patients with cerebral symptoms and those with an intermittent course of the disease were best suited for an integration in the working process. The largest part of the patients who had to be declared invalid was found among the agricultural workers. In 18.6 per cent of the patients, declaration of invalidity could be avoided by an appropriate workplace.
Severe hirsutism, deepening of the voice and enlargement of the clitoris developed in the course of two years in a 55-year old hysterectomized woman. Laboratory examinations showed markedly elevated plasma concentrations of testosterone and androstenedione and a moderately increased urinary excretion of 17-ketosteroids. Gaschromatographic analysis of the urinary steroids, revealed that she mainly excreted etiocholanolone, androsterone and pregnanetriol. Plasma androgens and urinary 17-ketosteroids were not suppressed by dexamethasone treatment. During catheterization of the vena cava blood samples were selectively taken from the ovarian veins. Androgen concentrations were the highest in the plasma from the right ovarian vein. However, phlebography as well as adrenal scanning with 131I-adosterol indicated a tumor of the right adrenal gland. During laparoscopy the right ovary was found to be enlarged, and it was subsequently removed. It contained a tumor 2.5 cm in diameter which had the histological features of a hilus cell tumor (Leydig cell adenoma). Two years later, the patient underwent surgery for suspected tumor of the left kidney. A functionless atrophic left kidney was removed. There was a complete thrombosis of the left renal and ovarian veins. Possibly, this severe lesion of the two vessels had been caused by their previous catheterization.

The insecticide/ascaricide dinitro-ortho-cresol (DNOC) was tested for mutagenicity in BASC or Muller-5 test with Drosophila melanogaster. The frequencies of induced sexlinked recessive lethals in premeiotic and postmeiotic germ cell stages of spermatogenesis were determined after exposure of adult wild-type males by oral application of DNOC. Sex-linked recessive lethals were scored in the F2 generation according to standard procedures. The mutagenic activity of DNOC at concentrations of 0.25 to 1.01 mM (50-200 ppm) in postmeiotic germ cell stages (11 lethals/1570 chromosomes tested = 0.70%) > premeiotic stages (3/1001 = 0.29%). The mutations rate in all germ cell stages was 0.59% (18/3140). The lowest effective concentration for the induction of recessive lethals in nature sperm was 0.25 mM which is 1/3 to 1/2 LD50 which is approximately 0.61 mM. The frequency of spontaneously occurring lethality was 0.06 (1/1718). The data presented here show significant differences in Kastenbaum-Bowman test. Dimethylnitrosamine (6.8 mM = 500 ppm) induced a rate of 21.0% of lethals (112/534).

From 1971 through 1979 145 newly diagnosed patients with ALL have been treated within a series of consecutive studies. Study I corresponds to branch A of the 1972 DAL study. In the following studies the induction therapy has been escalated stepwise with the continuation therapy remaining mostly unchanged. Thereby the disease free survival rates increased from 75 to 94% after one year and from 32 to 60% after 4 years respectively. CNS-relapse mainly occurred during the second year of treatment. Their incidence rose from 5% to more than 10% in connection with a change in the radiation portal. Since another correction of the portals with special consideration of the paramedian lower border of the skull base no more CNS-relapses have been observed until now. The actual cooperative ALL-study follows a modified BFM-protocol with postponed asparaginase in hoping to achieve reduced initial morbidity and at least equal good survival times.
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the cardiotoxicity of the tricyclic antidepressant imipramine. The experiments were carried out in rabbits during continous intravenous infusion of imipramine, and electrocardiographic and haemodynamic changes were observed. The blood flows were measured using the radioactive microsphere method based upon the principles of Fick and Stewart Hamilton. It was found that the decrease in heart rate and the changes in heart rhythm were always preceded by a fall in arterial blood pressure and cardiac contractility, expressed by a fall in dp/dtmax. On the basis of the results it is concluded that a direct depressing action on the myocardium is of importance in the development of cardiac complications, although both a depressing influence on cardiac conduction, an anticholinergic effect, and an influence on adrenergic factors may also contribute. The possibility of positive correlations between the changes in plasma-imipramine concentration and the changes in the dp/dtmax and the QRS complex cannot be excluded.
