The cellularity of developing adipose tissues in Pietrain and Meishan pigs.

The development of external, internal, inter- and intramuscular adipose tissues was compared in Pietrain (lean) and Meishan (obese) pigs during their growth, at 0, 7, 30 and 90 days of age. Up to 1 month of age, the total lipid content of external and internal adipose tissues as well as mean adipocyte diameter increased similarly in both breeds of pigs. The percentage of plurilocular adipocytes decreased in both breeds; it remained higher in Meishan up to 30 days of age, which would indicate a delayed maturity of adipose tissue in this pig. Adipocyte hypertrophy characterizing the Meishan pig starts between 1 and 3 months of age. At 90 days, adipocyte diameters were about 50% higher in Meishan than in Pietrain. Muscle lipid content was higher in Pietrain than in Meishan until 1 month of age, whereafter it became lower than that of Meishan. Intramuscular adipocytes appeared later than those of other tissues in both breeds and were larger in Meishan than in Pietrain.

Effect of a high linoleic acid diet on delta 9-desaturase activity, lipogenesis and lipid composition of pig subcutaneous adipose tissue.

The effects of three diets were compared: a high linoleic acid diet (diet M containing 4% maize oil), diet T containing 4% beef tallow, and C, a conventional control diet, on delta 9-desaturase activity and lipogenesis in pig subcutaneous adipose tissue. Diet M increased lipogenesis (estimated from the activities of acetyl-CoA-carboxylase, malic enzyme and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase), and decreased delta 9-desaturase activity, in comparison to the other diets. Linoleic acid content was higher in the pigs fed diet M than in the other pigs (amounting to 26% of total tissue fatty acids versus 15%, respectively). The lower monounsaturated fatty acid content in adipose tissue of pigs fed diet M compared to pigs fed other diets could be associated with the lower delta 9-desaturase activity and the lower oleic acid content of diet M. The present study suggests that delta 9-desaturase could be involved in the regulation of monounsaturated fatty acid content and hence in the quality of pig adipose tissue.

Development of intra- and intermuscular adipose tissue in growing large white and Meishan pigs.

Lipogenic enzyme activities of porcine intra- and intermuscular adipose tissues were determined in growing lean (Large White) and fat (Meishan) pigs. The activities of acetyl-CoA-carboxylase (ACX), malic enzyme (ME) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) were compared in both breeds and at both adipose sites. All three enzyme activities were much lower in the intramuscular adipose tissue than in the intermuscular site. Although the lipogenic activity of the intramuscular adipose site was low, it appeared, however, to possess adequate levels of enzymes for in situ lipid synthesis. The highest differences in lipogenic enzyme activities between Meishan and Large White pigs were found in intramuscular adipose tissue, and essentially concerned the activity of malic enzyme which was much higher in Meishan pigs. A close relationship between ME activity and lipid content of intramuscular adipose tissue was observed in both breeds. It was concluded that ME appeared to be a major factor affecting the incidence of higher intramuscular fat in the pig.

The adipose conversion process: regulation by extracellular and intracellular factors.

White adipose tissue regulates lipid metabolism and acts as a secretory organ. Because of its importance for human health and animal production, many studies have attempted to better understand its development at the cellular and molecular levels by culturing preadipose cells in vitro. This synthesis article describes our current knowledge, acquired by this approach, concerning the regulation of the different steps of the adipocyte differentiation program by extracellular (hormones, cytokines, growth factors, retinoids and fatty acids) and intracellular agents (second messengers and transcription factors). The discrepant effects that have been observed for some of these factors are also discussed. This information is very important in the perspective of a better control of fat deposits in human and breeding species.

Lipogenic enzyme activities in subcutaneous adipose tissue and skeletal muscle from neonatal pigs consuming maternal or formula milk.

The influence of maternal and formula milk on lipid metabolism was studied in 7-day-old pigs. Lipid content, fatty acid composition, lipogenic enzyme activities and expression of GLUT4 mRNA were determined in subcutaneous adipose tissue and skeletal muscle from pigs that were bottle-fed formula milk (F) or sow milk (SM), or were sow-reared (SR). Bottle-fed pigs were isoenergetically fed and achieved similar daily body weight gain. SR pigs have a higher (P < 0.05) body weight gain than bottle-fed pigs. Lipid content of adipose tissue was lower (P < 0.05) in F than in SM and SR pigs. In muscle, lipid content did not differ significantly between groups. In adipose tissue, acetyl-CoA-carboxylase (CBX), fatty acid synthase (FAS), malic enzyme (ME), glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activities and GLUT4 mRNA levels were higher (P < 0.05) in SR than in bottle-fed pigs. In muscle, ME and G6PDH activities and GLUT4 mRNA were higher (P < 0.05) in F than in SM and SR pigs; LPL was not detected. The present study indicates that lipogenic enzyme activities and GLUT4 mRNA expression are regulated differently in subcutaneous adipose tissue and skeletal muscle in the neonatal pig.

Lipids in monogastric animal meat.

Meat from monogastric animals, essentially pigs and poultry, is from afar the most consumed of all meats. Meat products from every species have their own characteristics. For a long time, pig meat has been presented as a fatty meat because of the importance of subcutaneous adipose tissue. Actually, when the visible fat is separated, this meat is rather poor in lipids: pieces eaten as fresh meat and without transformation, such as roasts, contain less then 2% total lipids. Poultry meat has always had a reputation of leanness because of its low content in intramuscular lipids. In addition, adipose tissues, localised in the abdominal cavity, are easily separable. The progress in genetics and a better knowledge of dietary needs has allowed to improve growth performances, to increase muscle weight and, in the pig, to strongly decrease carcass adiposity. However, strong contradictions appear between transformers and nutritionists, especially concerning the pig: the former wish to have meat with adipose tissues containing a high percentage of saturated fatty acids and the latter wish meat with more unsaturated fatty acids. The consumer, however, regrets the pigs of yesteryear or the poultry bred on farmyard that had tastier meat. At the same time, however, they request meat with a low fat content, which is paradoxical.

Influence of feed intake during pregnancy and lactation on fat body reserve mobilisation, plasma leptin and reproductive function of primiparous lactating sows.

From day 23 of pregnancy, 24 gilts received either a medium (M, n = 16) or a high (H, n = 8) level of feeding calculated to meet 115% or 190% of energy for maintenance, respectively. During lactation, all H sows were fed ad libitum (H-AL) whereas M sows were fed either ad libitum (M-AL, n = 8) or were restricted (M-RE, n = 8) to the amount of feed ingested by H-AL sows. Increased feed intake during pregnancy increased live weight, backfat thickness, and estimated body lipid and protein on days 4 and 25 of lactation (P < 0.05). It also resulted in lower feed intake and higher lipid mobilisation during lactation (P < 0.05) without a detrimental influence on milk production. Activities of malic enzyme and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase from neck fat samples were higher in H than M sows on day 4 (P < 0.05). They decreased during lactation in H sows (P < 0.05). Mean diameter of adipocytes decreased during lactation in the 3 groups (P < 0.05) but did not differ between groups on days 4 and 25. Plasma leptin on days 4, 11, 18 and 25 was higher in H than in M sows (P < 0.05) but was not influenced by lactational feed intake. Neither measured characteristics of gonadotrophin secretion on day 22, nor of ovarian activity on day 26, were significantly influenced by the level of feeding during pregnancy or lactation.

[Leiomyomas of the duodenum (author's transl)].

The authors report a case of leiomyoma of the second part of the duodenum and note in the light of 55 cases in the literature, the main characteristics of this tumour including digestive hemorrhage, especially melena, which is the commonest mode of presentation. They compare it with other muscle tumours, e.g. sarcoma and myoid tumours. A barium meal and eventually superior mesenteric arteriography are the two main aids in diagnosis which remains by chance in 15% of cases. The volume of the tumour, the intimacy of its relations with the bile ducts influence the choice of surgery. The risk of hemorrhage and the histological uncertainty almost always lead to surgical operation.
