A role of anti-"LD" antibody in induction of active enhancement in rat heart allografts.

Heart allografts from S-D to Wistar rats pretreated with 5 x 10(7) spleen cells taken from donor strain 1 or 2 weeks before, survived indefinitely. Sera taken from the pretreated rats showed high lymphocytotoxic titers and obvious blocking activity against LMC of immunized Wistar spleen cells. Even though the sera were exhaustively absorbed with RBC, this blocking activity was not impaired, although CDC was reduced. The active prolongation of graft survival, therefore, correlates with the presence of anti-LD antibody.

Prognosis in children with metastatic rhabdomyosarcoma.

Distant metastases were documented in 83 of 161 children with rhabdomyosarcoma seen between 1953 and 1974. Of these, 31 had metastases at diagnosis (Group IV) and 7 were noted to have metastases only at autopsy. Only 6 are living with no evidence of disease activity at 6, 20, 77, 85, 105, and 112 months from time of metastasis. One child is living with disease at 98 months. Late deaths occurred in 2 at 31 and 41 months after metastasis. Sixty-four of the 66 deaths occurred within 24 months. The median durations of life after metastasis were less than 9 months in Groups I and II patients, less than 6 months in Group III patients, and about 12 months in 31 Group IV patients. The median time to metastasis in Groups I, II, and III patients was 9 months.

Early detection of chemotherapy-related pancreatic enlargement in children using abdominal sonography: a preliminary report.

At least two chemotherapeutic agents, prednisone and L-asparaginase, have been demonstrated to produce pancreatic injury. Early diagnosis of pancreatitis is frequently not possible, as symptoms are vague, physical findings may be minimal, and laboratory studies are frequently inconclusive until the injury is severe. Abdominal echography, as a monitor of pancreatic size, has proven to be helpful in the diagnosis of subclinical and early pancreatic injury of 14 of 19 selected children receiving prednisone and/or L-asparaginase therapy for acute leukemia or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma at the M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute. Employment of this new diagnostic method permits prompt withdrawal of the causative agent(s), thus preventing further insult.

Transcatheter arterial embolization for metastatic liver tumors: a study in resected cases.

We evaluated histologically the effect of transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) in five metastatic liver tumors from gastrointestinal cancer, which were resected at surgery or removed at autopsy after TAE. TAE was carried out with cubes of gelatin sponge; in 2 cases, iodized oil was used as peripheral embolic material. Histological examination revealed three tumors to be completely necrotized. Approximately 80% of the remaining two tumors were necrotic. Our data suggest that TAE holds promise in the treatment of metastatic liver tumor from gastrointestinal cancer.
