Experimental measurement of microcirculation in myocardial infarction by using radioactive microspheres.

Changes in regional blood flow in myocardial infarction experimentally induced in adult dogs have been assessed before and after treatment with normal saline, heparin and a thrombolytic agent. The technic used to measure the local blood flow and its distribution is based on the sequential injection of radioactive microspheres labeled with different isotopes. The resulting data showed that an average of 2.6% of the dose given is distributed in the normal left ventricular wall. Following infarct formation, this value drops to a mean of 0.45%. No appreciable increase was noticed after six hours of normal saline administration. After six hours of heparin infusion, the regional blood flow doubled, provided that the time elapsed between obstruction and the beginning of treatment did not exceed three hours. Fibrinolytic treatment resulted in a remarkable increase of regional blood flow (up to three times that of the postinfarction state). The shorter the time between the beginning of obstruction and commencement of treatment the better the restoration in the regional blood flow.

Experimental aspergillosis in rats infected via intraperitoneal and subcutaneous routes.

Normal adult rats infected via the subcutaneous (s.c.) route with viable spores of Aspergillus fumigatus develop serum antibodies, measured by passive haemagglutination and passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA), to extracts of the fungus. No significant histological abnormality was detected but s.c. inoculation in cortisone-treated animals induced the formation of granulomas frequently found in lymph nodes including those of the mesentery and paratracheal group. These granulomas were associated with the presence of both spores and fungal hyphae. Intraperitoneal inoculation of A. fumigatus spores occasionally produced lesions containing hyphae in the liver, spleen and mesenteric lymph nodes. Lesions were more frequent and extensive in cortisone-treated rats where again they were most prominent in the mesenteric lymph nodes. None of the regimes produced fatal hyphal aspergillosis. Both normal and cortisone-treated rats developed serum agglutinins but not reagins following intraperitoneal injection of spores.

The value of Tc99m-diphosphonate (HEDSPA) as a skeletal scanning agent.

A new "bone seeking" agent, namely the organic compound diphosphonate labeled with Tc99m was tried in 21 patients for skeletal scanning. In 3 cases, although the clinical and roentgenographic evidence of bone lesions was absent, bone metastases were found, and these were confirmed histologically. The organic diphosphonate is more stable compared to the inorganic polyphosphates and the images obtained are excellent.

Effects on small-intestinal function and structure induced by feeding a deconjugated bile salt.

Feeding sodium deoxycholate orally to rats for three days caused inhibition of small-intestinal active sugar transport and ouabain-sensitive, sodium-potassium-dependent adenosine triphosphatase activity. At the same time, there was evidence of extensive ultrastructural damage to the microvillar and intracellular compartments of the small-intestinal epithelium while its light microscopic appearance was essentially normal. These functional and morphological changes reverted towards normal over the subsequent four days when a normal diet, without added bile salt, was reintroduced.

Results of treatment of experimental pulmonary embolism, as determined by radioactive microspheres.

In this experimental study seventeen dogs subjected to pulmonary embolism were treated with either saline, heparine or streptokinase. Regional blood distribution was calculated in both, the healthy and infarcted lung tissue by means at the sequental injection of radioactive microspheres. Results of fibrinolytic treatment compare favourable over heparine or saline administration.

[Our experience with functional ascending cinephlebography].

Over the last three years, ascending, functional cine-phlebography has been used on 43 patients with different lesions of the venous system. The patient is placed in the decubitus dorsal position, on a radiological table inclined at 70 degrees. The opaque liquid is injected into the dorsal vein of the foot. Its movement is helped by the flexing of the muscles of the leg, and is followed on a screen. This method makes it possible to follow the morphological and functional aspects of the veins of the lower limbs. In this way it is possible to assess valvular function, the location of the perforating veins and their competence, the limits of a thrombosis, and the therapeutic results. This examination, which is painless and harmless, makes it possible to improve the precision of the diagnosis in patients with different vein lesions, and gives most valuable information on the functioning of the venous system of the lower limbs.

Metastatic mixed mullerian tumour of the esophagus.

Involvement of the esophagus by metastatic disease from malignancies of other distant organs is uncommon. A case of malignant mixed mullerian tumour metastatic to the esophagus is reported. Though a variety of malignancies is known to metastasize to the esophagus, metastasis from malignant mixed mullerian tumour has not been reported, as yet.
