Treatment of neurocysticercosis with flubendazole.

Thirteen patients with neurocysticercosis were studied and treated with flubendazole. Diagnostic procedures included computerized tomography (CT) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. In 12 cases treatment with the drug led to clinical improvement. CT showed that some cysts regressed in size, and in two patients they disappeared. The treatment also lowered the antibody levels. The drug was well tolerated and no allergic reaction or other side effects were observed.

Preferential association of nucleolar organizing human chromosomes as revealed by silver staining technique at mitosis.

The frequency of different types of satellite associations of nucleolar organizing human chromosomes (i.e. acrocentric chromosomes; 13, 14, 15, 21, and 22) is reported using 10 normal individuals by Ag-staining technique. The preferential involvement of acrocentric chromosomes in satellite association is suggested. Only acrocentric chromosomes with active NORs (i.e. Ag-stained) were found in association while unstained (inactive NORs) chromosomes were never seen in satellite association. In general as number of NORs expression increase, the frequency of association per cell was also increased. A possible mechanism and the clinical consequences of such an unusual phenophenon is described.

In vitro susceptibility of 50 non-beta-lactamase-producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains to 12 antimicrobial agents.

The in vitro activities of six commonly used antibiotics and six newer beta-lactam agents were determined in 50 consecutive clinical isolates of beta-lactamase-negative Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The gonococci isolated were notably resistant to penicillin, ampicillin, erythromycin, and tetracycline, whereas all of the strains were susceptible to the newer beta-lactam agents cefoxitin and spectinomycin.

[Primary sclerosing cholangitis associated with ulcerative colitis].

The authors report a patient with a primary sclerosing cholangitis associated with ulcerative colitis. There are comments on the histopathology and evolution of the illness. The patient has recovered from the chronic inflammatory bowel disease in a satisfactory way, however it seems that the primary sclerosing cholangitis it way apart from the colopaty.

[Patterns of urinary aminoacid excretion in exceptional children and patients with mental disorders in Costa Rica].

The amino acid profile was studied in individual random samples of urine from 1147 normal schoolchildren and 1074 exceptional children: 628 with mental retardation, 332 with hearing and speech defects and 114 with visual defects as well as in 673 patients with mental disorders. Laboratory procedures included chemical tests and one-dimension paper- electro- and column-chromatography. Phenylketonuria was found in a mentally retarded girl and in one of her brothers; iminoglycinuria in a mentally retarded boy and heterozygote cystinuria in a man with manic-depressive psychosis. The percentage of high excretors of beta-aminoisobutyric acid (B-AIB) in the controls (4.88%) was similar to previous findings in the Caucasian race. The children with hearing and speech defects showed a number of high excretors of B-AIB significantly lower (X2 = 5.32; p less than 0.025) and the children with visual defects a number of hyperglycinurias significantly higher (X2 = 9.19; p less than 0.05). Previous non-consistent findings on the excess of high excretors of B-AIB in Down's syndrome were not confirmed in this study. These results suggest a relationship between transport defects in the plasma membrane and pathological disorders in some of the cases screened.
