The carcinogenic activity of some compounds is linked to the electronic structure of their molecules. The authors calculate the localized molecular orbitals (LMO) by means of a topologic method they have developed, based in the electronic distribution of a single molecular region, that coincides or is next to the K region, instead of having to consider the two classical regions (K and L).

Chromatin of Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigotes was found to be arranged in a subunit structure by the demonstration of (i) nu-bodies, (ii) monomeric and oligomeric DNA fragments, and (iii) four basic nuclear proteins which presumably correspond to the intrinsic protein component of nucleosomes. A discrete core fragment of 140 base pairs and a basic nuclear protein fraction clearly similar to most histones H1 were not detected. In contrast with vertebrate material, the nuclear preparations were physically and enzymatically fragile, the basic proteins showed different mobilities in electrophoresis, but the DNA repeat length was similar. The data are discussed in relation to histone regional charge, histone content, and chromatin condensation.

In a group of 22 patients undergoing thoracotomy we compared two techniques of ventilatory assistance to the nondependent lung during single lung ventilation. We simultaneously administered a 0.5% FiO2 to the dependent lung. We used a CPAP system with continuous O2 flow limited by an underwater valve at a pressure of +5 cmH2O. We performed 33 ventilatory assistances: in 15 cases to the nondependent lung (CPAP group) and in 18 patients to the lower lobe of the nondependent lung (lobar CPAP group). Evaluation of both techniques was performed by means of arterial blood gas measurement and the mean values were compared using the student's t test. During single lung ventilation the PaO2 in CPAP group increased from 85.86 +/- 22.28 mmHg to 155.52 +/- 59.54 mmHg (p less than 0.001) and in the lobar CPAP series it increased from 88.75 +/- 24.34 mmHg to 122.36 +/- 43.21 mmHg (p less than 0.01). In 11 out of the 22 patients we firstly applied the lobar CPAP and thereafter the CPAP to the whole lung in order to compare the efficacy of both techniques in the same patient. The PaO2 during single lung ventilation was 86.9 +/- 22.7 mmHg and it increased to 111.1 +/- 37.9 mmHg after lobar CPAP (p less than 0.01) ant to 163.3 +/- 64 mmHg after total lung CPAP ventilation (p less than 0.001). Our results confirm the usefulness of both techniques and they indicate that CPAP to the whole nondependent lung is the most effective.
Twenty two children, under 15 years of age, from southern Chile's Tenth Region, with advanced stages of Hodgkin's disease (8 III-A, 6 III-B and 8 IV-B) were treated with chemotherapy (modified COPP protocol) and radiotherapy between 1976 and 1985 at Valdivia's Regional Hospital. Overall survival rate was 77.3% and disease-free survival rate was 64.5% after a follow-up period from 3 to 13 years (median 70 months). Five patients died during the first two years. One relapsed 10 years after beginning of therapy, but achieved a second complete remission. The survival rate in patients with lymphocytic depletion type (5 cases) was 20.0%, whereas that of the mixed cellularity type (14 cases) was 92.9% (p less than 0.01). No cases of second neoplasms related to chemotherapy and radiotherapy were seen in this series.
