The Warnock Committee decided not to sanction artificial insemination by donor (AID) and in vitro fertilisation (IVF) for single heterosexual women or for lesbian women on the grounds that it is better for children to be born into a two-parent heterosexual family. From an examination of the effects on children of growing up in fatherless heterosexual and lesbian families, this paper questions that assumption.

The Golombok-Rust Inventory of Sexual Satisfaction (GRISS) is a short 28-item questionnaire for assessing the existence and severity of sexual problems. The design, construction and item analysis of the GRISS are described. It is shown to have high reliability and good validity for both the overall scales and the subscales.
The study investigated the effects of modern dance on anxiety. State anxiety was assessed before and after a 3-mo. education programme, using the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. The target group followed a class in modern dance. Control groups were (1) a physical education group to control for the effects of exercise, (2) a music group to control for aesthetic sensitivity training, and (3) a mathematics group. Several concomitant variables were measured: age, sex, attitude towards dance, and previous experience in sport, dance, and relaxation. Dance training significantly reduced anxiety, but no control activities did so. Examination of the concomitant variables showed that the result could not be accounted for by any obvious artifacts.
In a randomized double-blind trial, infants with mild or moderate diarrhoeal dehydration were rehydrated orally either with a simple solution containing table sugar and salt (without potassium or bicarbonate) or with a complete glucose/electrolyte formula. All 32 given glucose/electrolyte solution and 27 (93%) of 29 infants given sugar/salt were successfully rehydrated with similar improvement in metabolic acidosis and rapidity of rehydration. The drawbacks to oral therapy with simple sugar/salt solution were the frequent development of hypokalaemia and greater volume of vomiting during treatment. Carefully prepared sugar/salt solution, if accompanied by adequate potassium supplementation, may be used as an alternative to the preferred glucose/electrolyte formula when the latter is unavailable.

An experiment was carried out to investigate unconditioned response diminution in the skin resistance response. By using an alternating series of paired and unpaired stimuli the differential predictions of the hypotheses of response interference, conditioned inhibition and expectancy could be tested. Ss were 27 young adult male students. The unconditioned stimulus was a tone of 105 db. For the conditioned stimulus the Ss were divided into two groups, one receiving a tone at 65 db and the other a tone at 85 db. Unconditioned response diminution was found. This diminution showed no significant change over trials and showed no correlation with amplitude of the conditioned response. This result is best explained in terms of expectancy.

An experiment was carried out on 40 pairs of adult male twins to investigate the extent of genetical determination in the cortical auditory evoked potential. Tonal stimuli of 1 sec duration, at an intensity of 95 dB and a frequency of 100 c/sec, were used. The inter-stimulus interval was 33 sec and the bipolar evoked potential was measured between the CZ and T3 scalp positions. The reliability of the seven latency and amplitude measures was also calculated and this was taken into account in the subsequent genetic analysis. The biometrical gentical approach, which gives maximal information particularly on small samples, was used to analyse the data. A strong genetic influence was found on all the amplitude scores. The environment made no significant contribution to these. For the latencies there was some evidence for a genetic effect; however, this was not very strong and can well be interpreted as being due to between family environmental effects.
The averaged cortical evoked potential (CEP) was measured from 296 male subjects in two studies and was correlated with scores on intelligence and personality tests. For both studies, auditory stimuli were used with bipolar electrode placement to the Cz and T3 scalp positions. In the first study, with 84 subjects, stimulus intensity was 95 dB (all dB readings re 20 muN/m2). Intelligence was measured with the Mill Hill Vocabulary Scale and personality with H. J. Eysenck's PEN questionnaire. The second study, with 212 subjects, used additional stimuli at 75 dB and 55 dB. Intelligence was measured with the Ravens Progressive Matrices. State anxiety and other state measures at the time of testing were also taken. Neither study found any relation between the CEP and IQ or personality. However, more bored subjects showed larger CEP amplitudes. The results are discussed in terms of Ertl's neural efficiency hypothesis and Eysenck's arousal theory of personality.
The colpocytologic efficacy of a new estrogen - ethinylestradiolsulfonate - has been studied in postmenopausal and fertile women. According to the depot character of the compound, ranging between ethinylestradiol and quinestrol, it exhibits a high and prolonged proliferative effect on the atropich vaginal epithelia. The weekly application of 1 mg of the substance in a contraceptive regimen causes a high grade of maturation with considerable individual differences. A single dose of 1 mg ethinylestradiolsulfonate quickly influences conditions of estrogen difficiency in the vaginal epithelia.

From a practical viewpoint, the close relationships among utilization review, quality assurance/improvement, infection control, discharge planning, social services, and medical records makes it impossible to separate them. Case management combines these traditionally isolated hospital functions into one department in order to perform many related functions simultaneously. It provides a much more effective and efficient method than can be accomplished by the traditional institutional approach.
